stephent, I used to live near Twickenham - the planes really were loud there! By all means complain about flights late at night or early in the morning, but I don't see what anyone could acheive by complaining about the route. All of London (and SE England in general) is densely populated, any route is probably going to disturb somebody.

I can't think of anything more boring than watching the wedding of someone I don't even know. Weddings are pretty boring at the best of times (although the piss-up afterwards is sometimes fun).

I very rarely notice them, and I've lived over near the Plough, and down near the station. I've never had double glazing.

That actually sounds quite reasonable. Spending 5 hrs in the airport overnight is no worse than getting up at 2am.

The unfortunate fact is that ex-council flats don't "perform" as well as other properties, whether the market is rising or falling. So lenders have to be careful.

It does seem that the govt is exploiting the situation, in order to push their somewhat dubious ideology. But even so, that Johann Hari article is littered with bad examples, and simplistic anecdotes.

Oak worktops aren't expensive. Maybe ?300-?400 for a decent 4 metre length. They won't stay perfect, and they will pick up marks - e.g. small burn marks and stains from dark liquids. But that doesn't really bother me, and they could probably be sanded out anyway. You need to oil them now and again to stop water damage, but it doesn't take long.

Surprised to hear you say this david, I thought you advocated high military spending? I'm most definitely in favour of a smaller armed forces, and a less active role in various military operations around the world. I'm not saying that we shouldn't retain the ability to exercise military intervention, but we need to stop pretending that we're still a major power, and get a sense of perspective. And the veil of moral obligation is starting to wear rather thin, when the true agenda is so obvious.

Violence and destruction doesn't help the case at all. But these things always attract idiots who either just want to smash things up, or foolishly believe that it's the best way to get media coverage. See also May Day protests, 2008 bank bail-out protest, etc.
