  1. I thought they were only lining the top part - where the rock is more soft. An escape hatch doesn't seem like a lot of good if there's a near vertical drop beneath you... and a space so tight that you wouldn't have a hope of climbing or even moving. Anyway, enough of the negative talk... let's hope everything goes OK!
  2. Train in Vain - The Clash
  3. I can't help feeling they're making a mistake by not lining the entire length of the hole with metal first. What happens if the capsule gets stuck in the rock? They would never be able to reach it.
  4. Strange Town - The Jam
  5. As far as I am aware, the process at the moment is to contact Diana Hall. Planning permission has not been applied for yet, they have wisely decided to consult with the local residents first. Bear in mind that the proposed building appears to be 'L' shaped, there will still be grounds behind it, no portion of the building would be directly adjacent to your garden. And surely whatever they build can't be worse than living next to a derelict site?
  6. Seems unlikely that the freehold of the property would be included for 500k...
  7. I've very rarely seen groups of Indian/Asian lads around here (causing trouble or otherwise). And as Narnia points out, I don't think Iceland has a meat counter (it's a frozen food shop). While any robbery is concerning, I'm not sure that the second/third hand info in the OP is to be taken seriously.

IS this an example of progress? :-S Maybe true with standard definition broadcasts, as the CRT will naturally smooth the picture. Shouldn't be the case for HD (or even DVD) quality though.
  11. Where do I start? Tens of trillions in CDS and CDO... Morgan Stanley gone bankrupt... all banks now making billions in profit and not paying tax... gosh...
  12. I think rahrahrah means that you can't be sure of what you can't observe. Everything else - the stuff we are told by science/religion/philosophy - may or may not be true. (not sure I totally agree, but that is what I think he means)

    Double Dip??

To make a > claim of a trend on the basis of two examples > where one is false and the other is a "possibly" > seems pretty non-rational. Of course neither of these are set in stone - not by a long shot - but they are both very real possibilities, which I mentioned in response to the popular "but where would they move to?" argument. I do follow the news, I am not totally ignorant... I assumed that others would know what I was talking about, obviously not. Next time I will endeavour to go into more detail for your benefit, Louisiana!
  14. Nice photo Shorty. If you look on Google Maps, you can see the old route of the railway line amongst the trees next to Wood Vale, and also running through Dulwich/Sydenham Woods.
  15. I agree with TedMax. Although I think that people should take financial responsibility for their own children, the reality is that there are always going to be children born into poorer families. And society has an obligation to ensure that they have an acceptable standard of living, and decent opportunities in life.

    Double Dip??

HSBC moving to Hong Kong, Barclays possibly moving to New York...
  17. Mick Mac, I would go further than that. Banks which bought the CDOs - including UK banks - generated huge demand, ensuring that there was no shortage of lenders willing to lend to sub-prime borrowers. You can also blame financial authorities for allowing banks to take on the exposure, and ratings agencies who got it all so wrong. The issuer of the instruments has to take a share of the blame, but they're just one link in the chain. And I don't think ANYONE in the city ever took the attitude that "it's OK, if it all goes wrong, the government will save us". Surprised that anyone who works in the industry (as I think Sean does..) would say that.

Nasty on a grand scale. Yep, it's a myth that the Italians are stylish. Crap leather jackets, tracksuits, ponytails, and stupid pointy shoes can be observed in abundance along the full length of the country.
  19. Brendan Wrote: > No but the rich poor divide in this country is so historically entrenched it is completely valid. Sorry Brendan, got to pull you up on this one. Not only is that statement lacking basis, it's actually completely false! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/01/Gini_since_WWII.svg/800px-Gini_since_WWII.svg.png So while we're currently not in great shape by Western European standards, it hasn't always been the case. In fact, pre-Thatcher, the UK was something of a leading light in terms of wealth distribution.
  20. Brendan Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > People on 10K who need council houses are labled "scroungers" but when folks earning 50K > get their child benefit taken away it's "unfair". I know. I am still struggling to understand what is unfair about not paying these benefits to higher earners.
  21. I was positive it was at first. Not so sure now...
  22. Bob's image = fake Still funny though
  23. David, are you saying that all benefits should be available to everybody? Including, for example, housing benefit?
  24. Don't forget the plasma balls, cassette rewinders, and clocks which ALWAYS tell the right time.
  25. Mojo, have you fed these concerns back to the council? Of course, airing your concerns on the forum is fine, but won't acheieve anything in it's own right. Please contact Diana Hall and/or complete the form I attached. (same goes for vik, plimsoul, chrism). Generally I think the new development is good news, but I am concerned about possible parking problems.
