  1. Note to self - sarcasm doesn't work on the internet.
  2. It's incredible, it's just like a real person http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11732995
  3. I wonder what the correlation is between number of active EDF members and posts about burglaries?
  4. Emerson, I'm employed by a bank, but I'm not a banker. There's no mystery there. I just find the misinformed - and sometimes plain incorrect - hyperbole frustrating. By all means criticise away, but make sure your criticisms are based on fact. In which case, I will probably join you in your criticism.
  5. Not as such, no. Tell me which bit you disagree with.
  6. Nero Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > see whether a rail stop at Camberwell could be built? There was a Camberwell station, but it was decommissioned in the sixties. It was - not surprisingly - situated on Camberwell Station Road, you can still see some of the old building (now mechanics workshops). I'm assuming it's on the same line as Loughborough Junction.
  7. Brendan Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why so defensive of ?the banks?? Partly because of the stuff about "giving the financial sector more power" and banks "putting guns to people?s heads". It's disingenuous, the banking system didn't decide to increase tuition fees. And partly because the student loans company is a public sector organisation. They are not bank loans. And partly because the portrayal of the finance industry as public enemy no.1 is getting rather tiresome and predictable. Especially when it is supported by distorted facts.
  8. I don't agree, actually. Everybody gets a secondary school education for free, which to be honest is probably enough for a lot of jobs. Not all careers need a university education... too many kids are being sent to uni, and too many kids are living away from home for 3 years. The old model of free university tuition only works when the numbers are lower. The idea that it's some sort of conspiracy with the evil banks at it's root (surprise surprise) doesn't really add up, does it? Edited to clarify... I totally agree that University education should be free, I just don't agree with the rest of it.
  9. They announced it over the PA at 11am. 90+% of the office were silent, a few murmered quietly, and 3 or 4 people seemed oblivious to it, laughing and howling as if they didn't know what was going on.
  10. Single-speed I can understand, from the point of view of simplicity/maintenance, if you ride a lot. But fixed wheel... it just sounds like you're deliberately making your bike harder to ride.
  11. Excellent news. A 15 minute service in the evening is a huge improvement.
  12. Let's be honest, a lot of them were just there for a laugh. Lots of shots of students pushing to get on camera, giggling gormlessly.
  13. What's the point of fixed wheel bikes - other than membership of the clique?
  14. Which bit don't you understand, pk? "Appropriate action" could be anything from going into the shop and asking for the photo to be taken down, through to full-on legal action.
  15. I think it's an amazing medium. The content is of course variable - there's lots of crap, but lots of useful/fun stuff too. Saying that the internet is a waste of time is a bit like saying books, newspapers, movies, music, phone calls, writing letters, etc are all a waste of time.
  16. Better to have a coalition than a pure tory govt, surely?
  17. pk - you are correct, I don't have a problem with it. I am assuming the shopkeeper has enough basic intelligence to tell whether the person was shoplifting or not. If someone has been incorrectly accused, they can come forwards and take the appropriate action. Let's see if that happens.
  18. How about a mobility scooter (and then use a minicab for longer journeys)?

  20. pclancey - I'm not using mine, I'll PM you. You don't need to show the phone, you usually just read it out. Text it to yourself if necessary.
  21. I don't get it, Ted. Which post? The one where you said "Is this ... the same Hal the cookery expert who extolled Wanchai Ferry recipe kits" Hal did not extoll Wanchai Ferry recipe kits. Quite the opposite. Is my understanding of the word "extoll" correct?
  22. Readh the Wanchai Ferry post, Ted! Although to be fair, if you buy this crap in the first place, what do you expect?
  23. Seeing as presumably the only people effected by this are the theives, I don't see the problem. The photos are a clear warning that if you steal, your photo will be put up. If you don't want your photo there, don't steal stuff. If anyone is guilty of presenting a certain race in a negative light, it is the criminals themselves.

  25. ST&NLY - I won't be there as I am playing a gig myself elsewhere, but good luck.
