Man at front door asking if I want windows cleaned?

Jesus christ, what has happened to this forum? -
Dannii Minogue presented a children's variety show, acted in Home and Away, and followed it up with a string of minor hit singles. This somehow means she knows more about music and the music industry than Jay Kay? I appreciate that you're sticking up for the women, and that's all well and good. But let's be honest with ourselves for a minute. The panel consists of two men who know the music industry, and two women who look the part, and are fairly well known.

I suppose you're right, Bob. And let's not forget the children's show she apparently presented in Australia. Unbelievable.
-
Why not try it on one road first, and see if you get any results?

I heard Bon Jovi were on it the other day, I reckon they'll win. Wagner lost it after Ride of the Valkyries... I don't see him going any further. -
Anyone know: S. Saraiva??? (incorrectly addressed package)

Doesn't the package have a return address on it? -

I agree with ratty, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that some signals only stay green for literally a couple of seconds. It frustrates drivers, resulting in dangerous driving. -
David - Thank you for clarifying. I am actually surprised that more trials - and higher quality trials - have not been conducted. I also find it absurd that somebody should be able to sell something as a medicine, without it being subjected to drug trials. It is also concerning that many of these practitioners have very limited knowledge of western medicine, and will be unlikely to determine whether it is dangerous to combine what they are prescribing with any current medication. Proper regulation of the drugs and the practitioners would protect consumers, and also help us to separate out the "woo" from the facts.

Standard Chartered have already started giving employees iphones instead of Blackberrys, apparently. UBS and JP Morgan are both running iphone/Android trials, hooked up to the company's mail servers.

COME ON DAVID!! Stop back-peddling and changing your argument! Do you still believe that Chinese herbal medicine is only a placebo, and will never contain an effective active ingredient?

Absolutely, if you take something which hasn't been properly tested, it may have bad side effects, or maybe it just won't work at all. So there are obvious dangers. Doesn't make it a placebo though, does it?

Surely either you accept it and turn a blind eye, or you write down the number plate and tell the police. Posting on here may help vent your frustration, but will not really achieve anything...

Did you read the case > in my link about the civil servant being given (I > refuse to use the word prescribed) high doses of a > banned substance that caused her to lose the use > of her kidneys? I think you misunderstand my argument. We are in agreement on the above, but it is a criticism of some practitioners, and of the failure of the UK govt to regulate them. It is not a criticism of the medicine itself. The pseudo-science behind it may seem dubious to you and me, but the facts are that Chinese herbal medicine can work. And it seems overwhelmingly likely that there are effective remedies available which have not yet been picked up by mainstream medicine. Being cynical is OK, but I don't think we should be close-minded.

Narnia, you're wrong. He has a beard.
-
david_carnell... what's the point in being so condescending? The pseudo-scientific explanations behind Chinese medicine may well be nonsense, I'm in agreement with you there. But a lot of it works, and (as several of us have said), some mainstream medicines have been derived from Chinese medicine. That's not "anecdotal flim-flam", it's fact. So the claims such as "TCM is wibble" or "it's a placebo at best" are inaccurate. The problem is that it's not regulated (at least in this country)... so remedies are not subject to trials, and people are ripped off or given inappropriate treatments.

Damn... too late. I would have suggested measuring 100g, putting the cocoa onto the scale one spoon at a time. When you know how many spoonfuls equal 100g, just divide that by 4.

That's what I was Saying Mick. Of course they do. Although to be fair, I'm sure many of them don't...

Kiwi, the first appeal always gets rejected, that's standard. You have to continue to contest it, and eventually you'll get a hearing scheduled in some sort of mickey-mouse court. If you have hard evidence then you'll win - although I gather that by the time you get to this stage, the council often give up and you win by default. Unforuntately illegal/unscrupulous/predatory traffic wardens are a reality!
-
I think most of what you say is true Sean, but I was really responding to Carnell's claim that all Chinese medicine is a placebo... which is obviously incorrect. But, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that there are established herbal medicines out there which haven't yet been picked up by mainstream/western medicine. It has certainly happened before, it will probably happen again.

david_carnell Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Chinese medicine = utter nonsense Narnia. It's a > placebo at best and harmful at worst. Don't waste > your money. I'm not normally an advocate of "alternative" medicine, but what's the problem with Chinese medicine? Why is it so far-fetched that herbal medicines may contain an active ingredient which will ease the symptoms? You know, there are Western medicines which have started life as Eastern herbal medicine. As Huguenot says, the main difference is that in the west, scientists will try to find out why and how it works, extract the active ingredient, and put it through extensive trials. In traditional Chinese herbalism, they'll observe that it works through trial-and-error, and then make up a theory to support it.

Any crossing from Hawaii to mainland goes via Seattle... they obviously just added the kayaking route into their database as a fixed point-to-point crossing.
