Me too - the idea that renting is "throwing money away" is not really accurate, given the amount of interest you pay on a mortgage. And you can be hit with expensive maintainence bills too. Renting can actually make financial sense (and obviously gives you much more flexibility in your lifestyle). Saying that, I am a homeowner... but not for financial reasons.

"Leah" on the first page seems to say that the victim received a stab wound close to the heart. Am I missing something?
  8. I would consider it a sensible precaution (as do lots of people). If you disagree of course that's fine - we're all free to do as we choose - but why so defensive? What with your embroidery remark and quoting of "ladies", you seem to be verging on accusing mike of sexism, which seems unfair to me.
  9. I always prefer to meet my girlfriend at the station if she's coming home late at night - and if I'm not around, I'd prefer she got a taxi. Yes, it's unlikely anything would happen, but it gives us both a bit more peace of mind. I find it strange that people (women or their partners) should have an issue with this, I've known women who lived to really, really regret walking home alone.

As I understand it, Avian Flu (HN51 strain) is still around, and human infections still do occur. But it's spread was largely contained due to culls of infected animals, and changes in working practises. It didn't just disappear, it was brought under control through appropriate intervention. I think the news reports are a little sensationalist, but if it kicks people into action and halts the spread of a deadly disease, then maybe it's not such a bad thing.
  11. I don't think many people were predicting a 2nd round KO... most punters and pundits were going for a late stoppage.
  12. You can - although catching a tube at London Bridge during peak hours is not always easy.

The 176 is much quicker for getting into the west end. However, I would not recommend either, as they are slow, don't run to a timetable, and tend to make me feel travel sick. I prefer getting a train to London Bridge, then another train to Charing Cross (or hop on the westbound Jubilee line). You can also get trains to Victoria or Elephant from Denmark Hill or Peckham Rye.
  14. Big enough to attack a human?
  15. What a disgrace! I don't think any of us were expecting that, especially as Hatton actually looked pretty decent in his last fight.

Under-staffed for our current activities, perhaps, but not for the size of our country. Why does Britain feel the need to impose itself on the world stage so much more than other European nations do?
  17. Ulrich - The Sir Finks Xavier - Brindle (I had to use t'internet for that, obviously I've never heard of either of these bands).

You haven't told us who the ranter is. Is it "thebeard"?
  19. Pony Express was definitely the way to go before they invented the cylindrical record. I agree with JL... apparently Chris Stein started off trying to emulate the New York Dolls, and they're often mentioned in the same breath as The Ramones. But the music speaks for itself - they did some great songs, but it's also the kind of thing my parents could (and probably have) played in the background while serving drinks and nibbles to the neighbours. On the other hand, I don't think they've ever served up pimms over a Black Flag record.
  20. I admit that I'm not especially familiar with African and Carribean food. But what I've tried, I've really enjoyed (apart from those horrible "pattie" things you sometimes get in chippies, but I don't think that counts as food). I don't really know why, but African and Carribean restaurants always seem to have a harder time generating mainstream appeal - i.e. Jerk Rock didn't last that long despite everyone raving about it. Perhaps people just aren't adventurous enough.
  21. JL - now I like Blondie as much as the next man... but "punk" they ain't!
  22. Here's a "croud pleaser" selection... The Same Old Song - Four Tops Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day - Stevie Wonder I Chase The Devil - Max Romeo Mirror In The Bathroom - The Beat Complete Control - The Clash Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones Can't Explain - The Who Town Called Malice - The Jam The Reflex - Duran Duran It's A Sin - Pet Shop Boys
