Oakwood midwives - advice needed please
Cora replied to MichelleT's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think this not seeing you til after the first scan is a newish thing. I am expecting my third and remember seeing a doctor or midwife at least once before then for my other two pregnancies. I think it must be a cost saving thing but I worry that it means that the basic information about folic acid etc is not getting to mothers in early pregnancy. I think it also starts the pregnancy off on a wrong step - by the time you are 3 months pregnant you have lived with the pregnancy for a long time, often not telling colleagues, family etc...so an initial confirmation, support appointment is important I think. But I guess it is felt that when resources are tight it's not important enough?! -
The early years is great. I have a son in reception and one in nursery and I am really happy with both. PM me if you have any specific questions...

You can apply to as many nurseries as you want and you apply individually to each school - Siblings are first priority but after that most of them work by age I think not distance? This may have changed. I would definately have a back-up.

Ann, do you know what would be a 'comfortable' number of births for Kings in a 24hr period? I.e That the midwife team on duty would feel happy that the system was working and that care was not being compromised due to being overstretched. Just interested no hidden agenda.....

Filling in forms online for primary school place - help!
Cora replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've got a feeling this has changed this year. Last year you were allowed to apply to 4 schools in each borough, applying seperately to each. They were talking about restricting this to only 4 or 6 schools in total regardless of which borough the school is in and I guess that would be a common application but not sure best to phone and check...... -
We decided to go for CVS as 1/44 high risk - It was uncomfortable but the needle only takes cells from the placenta which was a relief as I thought they would have to get closer to the baby. I felt there was really no added risk to the baby as the staff at kings are so experienced (there are many other factors that can cause a miscarriage anyway). My feeling was that once I knew I was high risk I needed to know and not spend the next 6months speculating/worrying. Waiting a week for the results was hard enough! My understanding is that the nasal bone is a good sign that Downs is less likely. Just before have the CVS we had to have a more detailed scan which I found very hard knowing that there could be problems - the sonographer was amazing - putting the risk in context, pointing out that in some other countries cvs's are routine and reminding me that this is just a screening test - Kings do hundreds of these tests and only get a few back as positive each week. He reassured me to deal with each step at a time. Once we were cleared for Downs we got a follow-up cardiac scan which checked for any connection with the nuchal measurement to obvious cardiac problems. Again this was really reassuring. We are so lucky to have such expertise at our local hospital......obviously we've got plenty of other things to worry about though.....like coping with another baby!!

So much for James Barber's contributions.....
Cora replied to Townleygreen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Steady Eddy, I agree all the councillors, police and members of the public should be working together on this but I think it's a bit harsh to say that Mr Barber should not get involved by organising a site visit, which he did emphasise he would invite the Camberwell councillors to (Maybe the Police could be invited to?). If not in the capacity of a councillor he has pointed out that he is a user of the area, surely that gives him the right to get involved? - I see it more as doubling the interest/movement of change by involving the Dulwich users end. I will make an effort to be there at 8 on the fifth - sorry geography is not my strongest point...Is that the East Dulwich Grove End? -

Acid casual + James Barber, happy to get involved too about this - As a parent of Bessemer who makes the journey three times a day, it would be good to get something sorted...keen for my kids to be able to do after school clubs which at the moment is not possible as there is no safe route home after dark.... -
yep my 5yr old would be interested so long as it was East Dulwich local....

My understanding is that they will be handing over the keys in June ready for use in September....as far as I know it is all on course...they put up the basic structure last week, now that the foundations have been finished....very exciting!

East Dulwich seems to have such a wealth of classes but this seems to be a missing gap for any entrepreneurs out there! I would love my boys (5 and 3) to have the chance to do some regular cooking. Yes I know I could do it at home but we never get round to it.... Please let me know if there is anything out there.. Thanks

My boys go to the one at the corner of Townley Road/Lordship Lane. They've always been fine. They don't take adult NHS patients onto their books but seem happy to have the children.

I had it last week (six months pregnant|0 and admit felt very nervous about it. This week one of my children had 'flu like symptoms' and I was really relieved I could hug and comfort him without the fear that I might contract swine flu from him. I remember hearing on of the top medical bods saying that if you contracted swine flu it would not pass to the baby but the danger is in you getting a fever which could affect the baby. My logic eventually was that if the illness itself would not transfer to the baby then the vaccine wouldn't either. A warning though, it is the first vaccination to affect my health - it laid me low for a couple of days including a dead arm for three days. Make sure you get it done when you know you can lay low for a bit.

Dulwich Cars got me there both my labours, their number was given to me by Kings so I think they're used to the whole 'woman in labour' thing - the first time they even found a flashing light to go on the top!

In response to the Daily Mail article...I read this (free with my tesco shop!) and the article infuriated me...for one of the surveys that held such huge headlines only 15 doctors were surveyed?!!!!!!
