Celestial hasn't been in East Dulwich (not at it's current LL location) for anything like 20 years.

Next the pubs will be giving you another 5 mins to finish your pint and the charity shops will be opening their locked doors to let you donate clothes even though they've just closed. THEN where will it all end ?

I have some strictly adhering (to Sikkhism) mates and one or two very 'slack' (compared to the devout) Sikh mates who are up for beers etc. Same as any religion / group of people.

I don't think a landlord is even obliged to provide heating - it depends what the contract says. You would have viewed and chosen the property and had a set of questions to ask before moving in and some assumptions you may have made. If the landlord is interested in retaining you as a tenant though he should at least try to be flexible, but that's his choice. Put it this way, blinds curtains won't make too much difference if you're really wearing outdoor gear to survive in the flat. Next year will be the same, and the year after. If he tried to show the flat to prospective new tenants he'd surely (based on what you've said) have difficulties making the accomodation appear comfortable/cosy so perhaps it's worth giving your notice now and saying why. If he concedes perhaps you can negotiate an additional radiator or two in the cold part of the flat. If you threaten to move out he will know this may be a recurring problem for him every winter, for any tenant. The money he may lose trying to let it again may act as a driver for some change.. If you view alternative flats now you may be able to get a better picture of how well equipped they are for heating. This is my opinion not gospel.

I haven't seen it but it sounds like they may be replacing the roof and / or building a loft extension and want to ensure cover from weather whilst they proceed with the works ?

Iran says won't send condemned woman to Brazil
KidKruger replied to DJKillaQueen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I wouldn't say that oppression of woman in Iran primarily compromises their intelligence, the key issues are the comparative constraints on their behaviours and engagement in an Iranian society that is dominated by males in many aspects. Intelligence is surely there already or it's not (within limits obviously and allowing for the benefits of 'academia'). I would say the potential women are prevented from reaching is their ability to participate evenly and equally at all levels in that society and therefore in their ability to engage in those respects with their counterparts from nations around the globe. As a result Iran is surely preventing ITSELF from reaching it's full potential. Edited to say I just noticed your comment was about middle-east, however my comment is still valid I think, just applicable to middle-east now and not just Iran. -
Got the boxed set on DVD a few weeks ago, classic drama, the episode where the lads get ripped-off by the Irish/traveller fellas is so sad.

Thats how I fitted my burner. Good luck with yours. No I would not build an extension without consulting neighbours, in fact, I'm in process of building one right now - I guess that makes me inconsistent in your book huh - because I don't apply my carefree self-centered safety-ignoring habits in that respect ?!?! Must also be why I don't sound so smug !!! Heh heh.

If you've been using the fire place for several years to burn various solid fuels and have been getting the chimney swept with no issues then the question around impact on neighbours is proven. Fitting the register and short flue tightly and securely is fairly straightforward, if a little messy. I can see the reqt for the certification / checks in a lot of circumstances. However, in this instance I and my neighbours are happy. I'm not knocking your costs or approach, just sharing what my outlay was ! The OP can make up their mind how they proceed.

I fitted mine for about ?80. Cost of burner not included. I made a register plate and installed a short flue through it into the chimney void. It was a working chimney anyway and I have it sweeped (swept ?!) each year or two.

"While you were out" -- Royal Mail false delivery attempts
KidKruger replied to Alex K's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Definitely. I was re-wiring my downstairs hall a couple of years ago at a time when I'd ordered a load of stuff over t'internet so plenty stuff was being delivered, it happened 3 times in 2 days, I saw the man turn-up and stick the slip-through the letterbox and stride back to his wagon. I live next to the sorting office so I wasn't bothered, but it was useful to see this because now when it happens I don't have to scratch my brains wondering how I never heard Having said that, some days in the same week I DID get a knock and parcel from the chap (a different chap ?) when I answered the 'knock'. Perhaps it happens because it's close to clocking-off time when they have plans and don't want to be late. I'd doubt it's pure laziness - because THATS their job !! -
I think when push comes to shove most people would do anything to survive. We live in a very insulated society and most people seriously believe that events like genocide happen to 'other people and not us'. I'm not so certain how far we really are from all that. We just kid ourselves.

Weird - I just stuck on the Dears' EP when I got home a little while ago, got it from one of their gigs up near Royal Oak a coupla years ago.

Advice - solo walking holiday - somewhere warm
KidKruger replied to Marmora Man's topic in The Lounge
MM increasing from 10 to 20-25 per day is some improvement, if you've had that kind of form before then you may well be able to recover it, but (and I don't want to do the egg teaching sucking thing) improvement does take time and is best done gradually... My longer hikes are always with a pack due to the hassles of having to line-up accomodation and govern the walks around such, I find it easier to just stroll til i drop kind of thing then pitch for the night. Other ways of increasing / equivalents to increasing are to carry a pack to elevate the effort you have to put in to the walk (I find 18 miles with a pack full of tent, cooking gear etc does the trick) or you could try hiking at altitude because that's a bugger even without a pack and you sure learn to use oxygen efficiently. I think this time of year if you wanted altitude you may have to go to NZ or somewhere where it's not so cold this time of year. Atlas mountains maybe OK in Morrocco ? If you ever get a few weeks in July/Aug I would recommend Ladakh. -

First day of the new Dulwich Swimming Pool
KidKruger replied to Weegee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
you don't have to be a member to go to the swimming pool with your child. just make sure it's not all set-up for lane swimming or other activities that may not suit your 1 year old. -
I'd be interested to read more about the alleged dispute / fall-out between the majority of the miners and a certain 5 other miners who were (I think) temporary or contracted/sub-contracted. It was seemingly a significant rift (I mean they were living seperately in the mine by choice) and was hushed-up a bit in the interests of presenting a united front. I read that they took a collective oath to not discuss this when back on the surface, in favour of securing the best deal for the group in respect of book, publicity and sponsorship deals. Perhaps a little like the group split which occurred between the survivors of the Andes air crash in the 1970s..
