Planning application - Donkey Alley/ Goodrich/ Dunstans
JohnL replied to Monkey's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
New planning laws came in at the beginning of the month and development is encouraged without planning permission in some cases. Beware - as Boris said it's build build build -

I assumed at the start that they would want to see your drivers licence or such and keep a note of it electronically or physically and if you said your name was mickey Mouse you'd be escorted to the door.

Central government is giving them money and encouragement to do this - that's one reason it will be difficult to stop in my opinion. Some big people in this government seem to support this and are encouraging local councils to move fast. "Now local councils and advocates, encouraged by city and central government, are working to implement the schemes at a rapid clip ? and not without pushback from drivers and residents alike." "Following the pattern of debate over Labour-led plans to build more bicycling infrastructure, the interventions have also been politicized, with local Conservative lawmakers stoking opposition to the low-traffic configurations. Yet the plans are being partially funded by ?active travel? emergency funds made available by the Conservative central government" https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-28/how-london-s-low-traffic-streets-keep-cars-at-bay

It isn't the council making rash decisions it's a social experiment across the UK and further afield. Notice how he repeats "playing with the streets".

Not sure Boris doesn't have some kind of post-covid long haul thing. There was a nasty rash on his neck last week and he seems to be doing less and less. Lots of last years high profile cabinet members have gone quiet too, It's all Grant Shapps and Gavin Williamson at present with Sunak appearing occasionally.

How to stop smoke from underneath neighbours seeping into flat
JohnL replied to sarah-marie's topic in The Lounge
Wow - that's some increase - 8% or so. I really don't know what will happen in 2021 though - so if you find somewhere you really like I'd go for it. Maybe with the smoking issue - take off 25K :) -

Sky News went to a couple of pubs in Manchester this week and weren't impressed by quality of name taking or social distancing (or alternatively purposely made the pubs look rather bad if you see a conspiracy). I don't see any tightening nationally on this ... but they will do it locally so hoping London stays with low levels of infection.

Sorry, in the 1990s an R was always added after the C by unhappy outsourced staff and customers and I never really got over the joke.

I exercise 30 minutes on the bike a day now - the idea was to help fight it off if the worst happened - and I do feel better for it and have lost a bit of weight without dieting. Less beer helps (I've not gone tee total - have a can or two after 9PM)

I think we can expect other initiatives to reduce road traffic sooner or later TFL have hired Capita (laugh if you want) for an array of projects "These projects are vital to cleaning up London's toxic air, encouraging people to make more sustainable travel choices and keeping people safe on the capital's roads. "The expansion of the ULEZ to the North and South Circular will be transformational, reducing road transport NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions by around 30% and improving air quality for millions of Londoners. "We have extended Capita's contracts to deliver these services over the next five years and will continue to work with them to deliver value for money, and to maintain and improve customer services."

I hope there's some immunity at least because assuming I've come into contact with it, then it is likely to have damaged my heart to some (maybe very small with luck) amount. The second time I get it it could add to that damage cumulatively until the damage becomes significant. This would make a heart attack more likely maybe years later. Until we know this we can't plan for any type of herd immunity that might take 10 or 20 years off many peoples lifetime for all we know.

For maybe between 6 and 12 months - I think I had it in February but I also think I could now easily catch it again and am not risking my health to find out :) There are always some people who are naturally totally immune due to a freak mutation or something - 1 in a thousand or less - the people who would survive if it really was a global killer.

I keep having to remind it's a world wide phenomenon - but some just do it better then others. https://padailypost.com/2020/08/11/street-closures-to-help-restaurants-will-continue-through-the-year-council-likes-covid-surcharge-on-restaurant-bills/
