But if you think a 50% top band for ?125k+ earners (about 750,000 people) is the best answer for greater wealth distribution you're dreaming.
  2. The childless digital nomads or tech owners go to where they are welcomed best. Currently: Malta, Portugal, Cyprus, Estonia...Even Berlin or Barcelona look attractive hubs at 50%.
  3. A 50% top rate for over ?125k though? Feck that. I'm all up for paying my fair share but if you penalise job creators who - in a tech enabled world - dont need to live here they really will leave.
  4. The Raider. He lives! Long live TDR.
  5. Yep. I was a regular on the 40 to work but gave up about 4 years ago. At 7.15am it used to take 35 mins from LL to Monument. It's now about 50 and painful.
  6. I can confirm - this was a genuine gesture with goodwill. Marvellous.
  7. This is nothing short of a disaster for local amenity value. Particularly challenging for elderly residents looking to receive a parcel - how can they be expected to take a bus then wait 30 mins to an hour just to pick up a parcel? Penguin - good post but couldn't the facility be reconfigured? If "Edwardian standards" means decent toilets, heating an open plan space why did they not explore that option? Will continue to write to MP...suggest everyone does.

The ?8 Paw Patrol helium balloons (image rights prob unlicensed) were beautifully positioned for maximum cash extraction.
  9. Hi, this was not the same black BMW I noted in the OP. The one I observed was a soft top with plate starting LC18. For reporting 101 is not easy - very often 20-40 mins wait which discourages reporting stuff. But we have direct police contact via our roads residents association. I emailed him directly and they ran a check on the plate and got back to me next day - was impressed.
  10. This evening...unusual car (black BMW) with occupant watching houses from a discrete distance between 5.30pm and 7pm. The last two weeks of August show a spike in break ins. Looks like some more coming up. Have reported to 101.
  11. Yep. Above all true. My missus was buzzed, today Saturday at 12pmish on Townley Road near Alleyns whilst out walking with our two toddlers. One rider, all black outfit, black moped and a fluro best. Black scarf round the face. Quiet st and stopped right opposite looking at her iPhone before deciding against doing it. Someone should get a Mad Max hitman to pop them all.
  12. Where did that poster MrBen go? He was hilarious! Also ????- I heard he made lots of money and emigrated to Portugal. The Christmas drinks where everyone dressed up and then fell out was also very funny.
  13. Be wary. There are lots of fringe operators under different brands. We have had good and awful. Also I think only two have permission to use the drop off forecourt area (outside Premier Inn at Gatwick North) which is super convenient. The company that has been consistently good and reliable for us is called I Love Meet and Greet (with a heart). You park up at the drop off, they meet you and take the car. Same place when you get back and it's really easy. Based on our past 4 trips I would reccommend them highly.

  15. And why not make it old school? Ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo. Then drive on to Brittany (Carnac) for some Eurocamp camping, beach and frites by a massive communal swimming pool. Buy some bangers, a flick knife and one of those pens with a stripper on it.

It's not the cheapest/best value on a Saturday agreed - especially for a 3 year old. It took about 15 minutes! But the point is that they now seem to have a clear charging policy. And I work weekdays. You pays your money...you takes your choice. And the Rocket guys were spot on chaps. BTW - not a barber but a men's cut at somewhere like Blue Tit is ?45. But different beast - it's a head massage, a beer and an hour in the chair, not 15 mins with some clippers.
  17. The lesser known Cote Vermeille us great. It's on the west side of the southern (Mediterranean) coast. Cheaper, more unspoiled and without the bling of the Cote D'Azur. You'll find a chain of charming coastal harbour towns, little beaches, vinyards and walks into the Pyrenean foothills. And Catalan culture. Get there by flying to Perpignan on a cheapish Ryanair and get the local train or drive south to Collioure (pretty, walking trails above), Porte Vendre ( good food), Banyuls. You can then hop over the border into Spain and check out Cadaques etc. Hotels are rarely more than 90 Euros a night even in peak season. With France May, June, early July amd mid sept to Oct are my favourite times. Would avoid August completely unless you like it busy.
  18. Well. I took my 3 year old son to Rocket today (Saturday) and they were great with him. And they were very clear on the charging. During the week a kids cut there is now ?14.99 but they have decided to charge ?21 for kids on Saturdays.I can kind of understand why as having your biggest taking day full of kids would be a 30% revenue drop. So go during the week. They are nice guys and we will be back!

  20. What happened to all the old 7/11's ? They ahould bring them back.

I'm just not sure what the purpose of the shareholder equity is within the model of a business, when there is neither no return, nor option to cash in the shares when >there are rules like DF cites above. **** The purpose of community shares is to provide a mechanism by which locals can help save independent shops and businesses. Most people who invest in community shares dont care about a financial return. The return comes from feeling part of saving something you value, and in enhancing and preserving a local community asset. Technically you are incorrect when you say there is no option to caah in the shares. You are also technically incorrect when you say the shares offer no return as shareholders can recieve interest. However, again this is not the reason why people invest in community shares.
  22. Somewhere on the original Ivy House shares thread (2013?) I remember an amateur builder/footballer/DJ claiming that she had run a bar in the area for 5 years. And that the Ivy House would never work. That dry sales could never hit ?3k a week there. Whilst no doubt it's been a huge challenge, the current team have really proved a lot of doubters/self proclaimed "experts" wrong. And stuck one right up them.
  23. Blah - break even is a real result considering all factors and I think you're missing the point. This is about investing in a valuable community asset that delivers amenity value for many. If you want to invest for a steady positive return buy a dull index linked fund or take out an ISA. I cant guarantee the same satisfaction however! The team at the Ivy House have done a truly amazing job thus far in saving the pub and offering lots of activities for all. After 5 years they deserve a fresh injection of support for the next. At least if you care about having choice, independent boozers and live music locally.

Nice one Cat.
