  1. Sean this whole bar area thing confuses me slightly. So it isnt all about the standard of the food then? If a pub serves food in an informal manner where you order at the bar and dont expect too much, it can still qualify as a pub. But if the place has its own chef and is independent it can qualify as a Gastropub (if the food is upto standard). I am guessing here (correct me if I am wrong), that a restaurant is more formal in some sense and has dressed tables and a waiter service, a pub is order at the bar service, and a gastropub is a restaurant standard fayre but with some sort of pub-like atmosphere/feel to it? Louisa.
  2. As much as I miss the old pub with it bunch of regulars, I must admit this place has since become a very decent foodie haunt in SE London and certainly ranks with some of the best even though I do think the place has become void of any atmosphere. I am no expert on Gastro and non-Gastro but certainly I would agree that if a place has it's own chef and isnt a chain run thing it is worthy of some sort of title. Although in my day it would have just been called a fully licenced independent restaurant, I dont quite get the distinction between Restaurant and Gastropub. Louisa.
  3. Sean what would you describe The Palmerston as now? Louisa.
  4. What exactly happened? Plus could you please give a description of the man in question Lydia. Louisa.
  5. How about Woolworths "the fresh food people" of Australia make this their flagship UK store. Minor adjustment to the interior and keep the signage (saves on cost) and hey presto, we have Rye Lane back on a path to the golden era. (wakes up after being slapped by Mr Louisa for singing waltzing matilda in sleep). Louisa.
  6. I have not been inside this place since the refurb, all I remember about it is feeling as though in some sort of semi-rural timewarp with an interior formerly filled with stuffed hunting trophies and pictures of the queen mother (going back a while now). I have never been a fan of Young's, the atmosphere and the food are always just a bit too wrong for my liking, so now I have read this thread I am going to go in there and try again anyway because I have nothing better to do with my time Louisa.
  7. After the sad demise of what is the very last 'department store' (I guess it could still be called that in some shape or form) along Rye Lane in Peckham, I am now very curious as to what will be replacing woolies. I hear Iceland have acquired 52 stores and Waitrose have also aquired an unspecified number too. Following some investigation, I can reveal the shop in Rye Lane has certainly not been been sold to either of the above and I am finding it very difficult to work out who in fact is in the process of acquiring this particular store. With the likes of M&S closing as opposed to opening new stores I think the chances are that they are out of the running, and the likes of poundstretchers already have a presence in Peckham. Anyone else more clued up than me on this? Louisa.
  8. Bloody hell, preserving road signs? Whatever next? Shall we preserve any traditional ED'er (pre 1997) as I hear they are a dying breed too ;-) Louisa.
  9. I went in with a relative a few months back who has always had some odd fascination with the village. We had a dinner there and it was bloody awful, small portions, cold, waited for ages to be served and when we were found them rude and quite aggressive really. To top it all the bill was pretty steep, so I didnt leave a tip and didnt say goodbye. Sounds childish but it made me feel better anyway. Louisa.
  10. Hello everyone. I have been curious to try this place since it opened and wondered if it would be worth judging by the state of most of the bread served on the stall outside Moxons for the previous few months. I went in slightly apprehensive as I usually buy a large tiger loaf from ASDA for a quid. I know and appreciate that this isnt a 'standard' bakery and is aiming at a certain 'clientele' (we all know who are), but I was desperate and I didnt have time to go elsewhere (I hate Sainsbury's bread and I dont do boiled sliced stuff). I came out at the end of my visit with a small loaf with seeds on it (I had no idea what it was supposed to be other than that I was told it was bread). Not only did I pay CONSIDERABLY over the odds (something I could deal with if on this odd ocassion the bread was actually worth it), but I found the bread to be overcooked and lacking in taste. I know in the past I have banged on about being ripped off on LL, but during these times of economic hardship for most, how on earth can anyone justify being taken to the cleaners by buying what is I presume meant to be some sort of 'niche' item, when it isnt even upto scratch. I think some of these small businesses must think we are green? I certainly was not born yesterday and I find it deeply offensive that I can be sold something like this for such a premium when it isnt even upto scratch. I wouldnt mind placing a bet (possibly in one of LL's many betting shops), that in a year from now LL will have more boarded up shops than a town in South Yorkshire. Need I say anymore. Louisa.
  11. The first is to be turned into an Amsterdam style dancing girl bar and the latter is going to be a prestigious sex shop selling prada toys for girls. Louisa.
  12. I went in and was quite frankly disgusted. Shit food, shit beer and the bar staff seemed snobby in my opinion. But oh well, I guess I shall have to pop back one time when i'm feeling more desperate for a drink and in a more discerning frame of mind. Louisa.
  13. God talk about rehashing old topics. zzzzzzzz Louisa.
  14. mikese22, lets hope the staff were not too forceful with the poor innocent chap otherwise the pc brigade on here will be up in arms about it. Louisa.
  15. Mohammed and I go way back. Louisa.
  16. Appologies if this is something that has previously been raised on here, but is anyone aware of the East Dulwich Deli (sandwich/snack/coffee type place) which is located inside Harrods department store in Knightsbridge. I was up there yesterday and I walked past and found it slightly odd, is it a franchise, does it have any connections with a local business? Louisa.
  17. BOB Village BOB Village - for all extreme sports fans Louisa.
  18. *bounce* Louisa.
  19. Threshers was great, I drink wine by the bottle but it hardly ever gets me slaughtered. I prefer some real ale or a lager (if need be) to get me properly sozzled. Louisa.
  20. Greenwich Village, Keston Village, Wimbledon Village.. the list is endless... although Dulwich Village is probably the best. Louisa.
