    Cycle shops

It's great to see so many independent cycle shops open in the area Cadence is great - welcoming to all, but core market seems to be the more serious club level cyclist. Edwardes in Camberwell is very good - quite old school but they have a lot of stock and are really helpful.

Cheaper but > there's less of a high street? Bromley is okay but quite different from ED; more suburban and socially conservative. Bigger houses at less money per square foot attracts families with older children and grown-up children, whereas ED is more popular with young families. The High St is big and there is a shopping mall, but it's much more chain orientated than ED. It's a larger town, so transport in from Bromley South is good for Victoria or Blackfriars. Bromley North goes to London Bridge and Charring X, but this service is slow - 40 mins...
  4. Clapham and Balham aren't in SE London, they are both SW. They both have better transport links than ED and are correspondingly more expensive to rent/buy. There's no conundrum there. I grew up in Bromley and there used to be a train that took about 12 mins to Victoria, I think the fastest one now is about 16 minutes. So if you live near Bromley South Stn and work somewhere near or well-connected to Victoria, you would have a fairly easy commute.
  5. The assertion that people only take notice of this because the hair salons in question are black businesses doesn't withstand much scrutiny. Media attention has also recently been given to: Potential redevelopment of and by Franks and the Bussey Building - whose main demographic is white and middle class Slightly further afield: Berwick Street Market - whose traders and are typically white and working class That said - change happens and businesses who rent their premises don't have an inalienable right to continue doing so on the same terms - as the change happens around them
  6. They are just individual perspectives - I think quinoa is widely available throughout the country! White wine and especially double cream in Bolognese - does not seem right to me though!!
  7. It's a circular argument though, surely. As a big part of the reason house-prices are so expensive in London is the current attractiveness of buying to let. nxjen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > TheCat Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Dont worry, living in a share house with 3 > others > > will grow pretty old, pretty quick...and in a > few > > years you'll look back and wonder how you ever > > thought it was a good idea.... > > I'm afraid for many it's likely to be a long term > experience as buying beoomes increasingly out of > reach for the average Londoner.
  8. "No fuss, unlike the song and dance caused in ED when Iceland was exterminated. " Wasn't that mainly you??
  9. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-38944964 There's some info here. One was hit by a vehicle that failed to stop afterwards and has yet to be identified (I think). Another was in a CSH lane when hit by a vehicle. Two pedestrians were also killed in London last week.
  10. If you don't cut the corner, then you cycle across the flow of pedestrian and cycle traffic who are mainly walking and cycling north/south. So following the path here can be more hazardous than cutting the corner. Given that three cyclists were killed in London last week, if there are any available resources for 'policing of offenders' I think they may be better deployed elsewhere, thank you very much...
  11. Agree that it's the vendor who is likely to be more at fault than the agent. I don't agree with this from Artful: "The estate agent works for the vendor and as such will try to get as much as they can for a property as that maximises the commission they get " Of course, they will try to get as much as possible for the property, but the stronger driver for them will be to clinch a sale regardless of it maybe being a small % below asking. For example if they are on 2% with the vendor and the property is worth ?500K, a sale at ?485k still brings in fee of ?9.7k. So whilst the vendor may not be best pleased about a drop of ?15K the agent can probably live with dropping ?300 - especially if a likely outcome is that if he doesn't put that deal through, his competitor might sell it and he'll get nothing.
  12. That's a bit harsh alex_b I received that email too. I didn't agree with it or even really understand it, but didn't find it pathetic. I hope that she doesn't face a move to deselect although at 66 she may not wish to serve for a further five years from 2020 anyway.
  13. that's a shame they have a really good selection in there
  14. I would support that fwiw
  15. Didn't rate him from the start, and though I tried to keep an open mind he has been extremely disappointing from the outset. But I don't foresee anything other than him holding on through to the next General Election at which Labour will get annihilated. Where we go from there I don't know. I just checked on Wikipedia though and although the prevailing narrative is that Labour is in existential crisis, the party currently has 229 parliamentary seats (won 232 in the GE). It's worth comparing that figure with those that the Conservatives won in the three elections they lost against Blair. 1997 Major 165 2001 Hague 166 2005 Howard 198

  17. I thought one place in ED tried that already...
  18. Ban buggies? Really?
  19. Fox, it's not a crime to be a victim, I don't think anyone has said that.
  20. I went there a while back and the atmosphere was a bit odd, but I don't recall anything racist or homophobic being said. The haircut also wasn't that great and I haven't returned. I don't think what you described is a police matter though, what law is it you think may have been broken?
  21. But the only times you do that are to differentiate between the experts who spoke in favour of remain and what you would expect from a proper expert - you know, the type that agrees with you... "They were not independent experts like you might normally expect to rely upon" "He could have made some proper expert points in a valid and measured way (as you would normally expect an expert commentator to do)"
  22. Robbin, you can prefix the word expert with so-called or place into speech marks as many times as you like, but I think it's unnecessary if you're talking about the likes of the Governor of the Bank of England or the MD of the IMF. They are actual experts aren't they?
  23. Another vote for Mozambique from me Although a friend of mine who is big Dylan fan insists it's the worst song on Desire. I don't agree but have picked up on Hurricane as my 'current fave' as a result of listening to the whole album recently. My 8 yr old son really likes it too, so I had to stop playing it round the house due to the inappropriate language...
  24. Now it's closed again and we live in Camberwell (below the bridge), it's horrendous again. EdCam - are you a troll?
  25. The Real Greek is quite nice. There is one near where I work in Spitalfields and there is also one at each of the Westfield Shopping Centres. I think East Dulwich might be a bold move for them though!!
