Food hygiene ratings - Scores on the doors
DuncanW replied to dbboy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm sure there are flaws in the system, and the obvious is, as with any inspection regime, it's a snapshot and things can change, obvs. I am also aware though, that restaurants can ask to be reviewed again within three months if they are marked down. You might work in the restaurant game, but to a basic issue punter like me it does still seem like the best way to make a judgement as to whether a restaurant has good hygiene standards or not. And restaurants that lie about their ratings are in a different category altogether - that's not a snapshot in time, that's a mindset - and a very worrying one at that. -

Fair question... I had that experience at Mirash not at any of the others. In this respect, I don't know about the other restaurants but Mirash is knowingly misleading its clientele into thinking its food hygiene is 'very good', whereas in fact it has been judged to be such that "improvements are necessary" - it's that deception that I was most troubled by. I wouldn't knowingly eat anywhere that had a 2 or below, and that's quite a worry that these other restaurants are graded as such. I didn't know that so thanks for pointing it out. Thankfully, there are other options. Jaflong, Rajah Rowing Team, Ganapati and Millenium Tandoori are all grade at 5. Village Tandoori is a 4. -

I have posted this already on another thread but I thought that the curry connoisseurs of East Dulwich should know: Went to Mirash on Saturday night. When the booking was made a couple of weeks ago, I checked the Southwark Food Safety web-page and they had a rating of 4. Not perfect but fair enough. So was surprised on arrival that they had a sticker in the window claiming a a rating of five. Whilst there, sensing a couple of other aspects were a bit off, I checked again on my phone to see that they were inspected in early November and now have a rating of two! I tried speaking with the manager about this discrepancy and also tried phoning them tonight to discuss. For the sake of brevity, I shall just say that neither conversation was productive. So if you're happy eating at an establishment that has a rating of two, but chooses to display a sticker claiming it's a five even though their previous rating was four, then please continue to give them your custom. If, like me, that sends a shiver down your spine, I would give them a very wide berth. I have reported to Southwark. -
I think it depends very much what type of music you are looking for, no?

I thought I would resurrect this thread rather than start a new one. Went to Mirash on Saturday night. Do you know what the amount was, is it on public record...? fishbiscuits Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I understand the amount paid to Southwark for use > of the park this year was very, very low. Good on them for doing something about it. It's a poor state of affairs though that schools need to take measures such as this. -
Charter school East Dulwich opening date

Great news... it looked to me like there was still a fair amount to do when I went past the other day. Crikey James, you'd think you would have been canonised for such service to humanity, not voted out... never mind, at least you're still incredibly pleased with yourself. -
Both our kids have attended General Stars which is at Charter, North Dulwich. They run classes at entry level and above, and enter the more able ones into competitions. We have found it to be very good. [email protected] 07534 982598

Cycle lane at the top of Rye Lane

Sorry you got hurt LM. I have had a similar experience on that stretch! It is a poor design, and would be improved greatly just by painting it bright blue. It's refreshing that this thread has not (yet) turned into an argument between cyclists and pedestrians. @Peckhamryu - I thought it was mandatory that bicycles were sold with bells now? -
Anyone still having Virgin Media problems?
DuncanW replied to milk_over_spoons's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yesterday they sent me a text to say they have fixed the local problem We have internet but it still seems well below par -
I have bought a property through PurpleBricks earlier this year and certainly from our side of the transaction, the service was very good. Apart from not having a local branch, they did act much like a normal agent. They were present when we viewed the property and the individual we met knew the house well and was able to answer questions about the property, etc. Once the offer was in, the person who saw it through was very efficient. More so than other agents we have used and more helpful than our conveyancer.

So was it worth it? ( the recent festival on Peckham Rye)
DuncanW replied to Sorehead's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was there on Saturday. It looked fine to me. I cycled past so didn't inspect close-up. But all big grass spaces have taken a bit of a battering with the hot dry weather we had... -

There's an excellent App called SkyView. It overlays a map of the night sky over the view from your camera. So if you align your camera over a heavenly object such as the moon, a planet or a star, the overlay will tell you what you are looking at. I think that Mars rises in the south east and sets in the south west, so a south facing vantage point should provide a view; eg East Dulwich Road facing back across Peckham Rye. It appears around sunset, looks pretty much like a star but should not twinkle in the same way. Of course London has quite strong light pollution making it harder to see anything. Also, tonight is forecast to be cloudy...
