  1. It's not got much to do with tax avoidance. But I think what Jimmy Carr did was wrong and I think the law has since been changed to make it illegal. But I'm all for a bit of legal tax avoidance - I call it my pension!
  2. Quids, why does wanting to change a system (or prevent movement in a direction you disagree with) mean you wouldn't want to get the very best for your own children from the current system in play? That's ridiculous, surely?
  3. Maybe toughen up a bit. It wasn't aimed at you or disparaging your capability to feel empathy with the situation.
  4. Tunnel is definitely quicker, but in my experience kids find the ferry quite exciting. If you have a long(ish) onward journey the ferry breaks it up a bit more too. In the tunnel, you can get out of your car but just to stand by the side of it really.
  5. East Dulwich is on the Tube now - that's exciting news!
  6. Not going, but have always enjoyed it when I have been. I know there has been trouble up there, but I've never seen any. Is Maastricht really bigger than Notting Hill? I thought NH billed itself as the largest carnival in Europe...
  7. No need to apologise and thank you for continuing to flag this matter. I just phoned First Port and they had already been notified - they have a contractor out tomorrow to collect the rubbish. I tried to speak about preventative measures but as a non-resident (of Altima) the person I spoke to couldn't go into detail. She did say though that these collections get billed back to to the leaseholders at the block - also that preventative measures such as CCTV could only be implemented with the approval of the owners of the block.
  8. Wasn't there always a a conneection between Si Mangia and Lorenzos? I'm sure when SM first opened they marketed themselves as being a 'sister' restaurant of Lorenzos...?
  9. Surely one Ocado driver who leaves the depot and delivers to ten customers is going to cause less pollution than ten customers making individual return journeys to their local Waitrose branch. They might not all go by car I suppose...
  10. Ignore that - Dulwich Park is a great place to learn or practise cycling. It's a shared space and most people are courteous and considerate. Some less so, but that's life in general, isn't it. Peckham Rye is also suitable. It doesn't have the wide circuit path that DP has, but is probably a bit quieter - maybe because of that.
  11. That's never been on TV - you're kidding!! Loved the title music - Redhead Kingpin!
  12. Thanks Alice. I have now made contact with the owner and will be reuniting later today...
  13. I found a phone on the 363 bus heading through Peckham towards Honor Oak on Saturday afternoon - roundabout 5:30pm It fell on the floor at the stop by Mr Bao - no-one claimed it so I took it home. It's rang a couple of times but I haven't been able to answer it, and I can't dial out on it as it's locked. I am keen to return it to it's owner. Please get in touch if it is yours.
  14. The reason the PLP wants rid of him is pretty straight-forward. Their view is he appeals to activists and those on the left of the party, but not to middle-ground floating voter whose support is essential to Labour ever winning another election.
  15. Louisa Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > This existential crisis makes the Michael Foot > leadership and subsequent SDp/Liberal pact look > like a cosy trip to the seaside for the Labour in > comparison to its present woes. Yup!! I'd like to see Corbyn gone, but if that end is achieved by keeping him off the ballot, the trouble will be far from over.
  16. Rendel - you are quite right about that. The vote is valid. I don't support the strike though and am just pointing out that as a great majority of teachers have not voted for it*, I don't feel not supporting the strike equates to not valuing the work teachers do. NUT membership = 308,569 *24.5% who voted = 75,599 * 91.7% in favour = 69,324 Combined NUT & NASUWT membership = 591,459 So that's less than 12% of union members that have voted for this
  17. I value the work teachers do highly. I do not support the strike. Not supporting this strike is not the same as not valuing teachers. The majority of teachers do not support the strike. 24.5% of NUT members voted for it. NASUWT, the second-largest union, aren't striking.
  18. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-36469254 Has anyone else seen this? Apparently Southwark has the 6th worst A Level uptake in England with just 18% of students from Southwark taking A Levels. I'm not sure about the data though as it appears to be counting only those that are studying in-borough.
  19. I run to (or home from)work sometimes - once or twice a week. I have a shower at the destination, although my colleagues can normally tell from my still red-face if I have run in.
  20. I would imagine most parents would support the tests. As a parent, I certainly want to know how well, or not, my children are progressing. I also want to know how well the school is doing. And I think the first round of testing has to be when they are quite young (6/7 being about right) so progress/value add can be measured for both the school and the child.
  21. "It reminds me of the Caffe Nero thing. 'Nobody' wanted them either. Big noise, lots of smoke. Don't want their sort. Let's vote with our feet. " When Caffe Nero opened, I think people felt that local, independent coffee shops might be under threat. I get that, and thankfully it didn't turn out that way. I think Brickhouse, Scala and Aneto have all opened since Nero appeared... But with Sweaty Betty, that angle doesn't exist and it's difficult to see why anyone would get upset by it. It's just a shop opening.
  22. Buses don't have the same recycled air that planes do. Also you could get off the bus and call an ambulance more readily .
  23. Agree with much of what has been said here. Neither Corbyn or McDonnell are electable leaders. That won't change. The Tories should be in the mire right now, so it's a crying shame we don't have a credible opposition. It's not clear who the next leader of the LP could be. Emily Thornberry was impressive on QT last week. Pity she ruled herself out of ever being leader of the Labour party when she posted the 'White Van' tweet. Who else? Chuka - Would have been great, but second chances don't come easy Keir Starmer doesn't seem to want it, and lacks parliamentary experience Hilary Benn, maybe???
  24. Go Pedler!! http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/battersea-power-station-bans-big-chains-from-9billion-village-a3205611.html
  25. I was going to go that match and will most likely go the rescheduled fixture. I support the club and commend their efforts with this. But still, I am really struggling to see how the postponement of this friendly fixture at a non-League club makes a national news outlet?? Anyone??
