  1. Interesting post and had a similar(ish) experience a couple of years ago. I had been toying with the idea of buying one and to my discredit, hadn't given much consideration to the fur-lined hood. I was in Liberty and asked an assistant if they stocked that brand, to be told that Liberty did not stock fur products for ethical reasons. I did some quick research including PETA and the CG website, and bought something similar with fake fur. With regards to the question of is it okay to buy and wear non-fur CG items, that's a moot point if you consider that there are other major fashion brands who also use fur; Fendi produce a lot fur products and are owned by LVMH, so if you're against fur, would you also restrict yourself from any LVMH product - that's quite a long list. Burberry also have quite a range of fur products.
  2. I support this and do currently own a car that would be liable for the charge. The reality is that in our area this change will not function as a tax on the poor, or anyone else, but as a de facto ban on the more polluting diesel vehicles. To use your car twice a week would cost ?1,300 pa so surely most people will accept they need to switch their car over rather than to pay the tax. The argument that this will disproportionately affect the poor is weak at best. It is true that this will be be a big change and much of the cost will be borne by those who currently own these cars, having bought them in good faith. Some of those will be less well off, but let's say you're on a modest income and you bought a car last week blithely unaware that diesels are now seen as unacceptably polluting - how much would this person have spent on this car? If it was ?20K I would suggest they might not be that poor after all. So maybe ?5k - that's still a fair amount of money though... depreciation means that the car would halve in value typically over three years, and let's assume that it halves again because of the ULEV - that's a loss of ?1,250 with three years to plan around it... are those figures about right? I'm not making light of a loss of around ?1,250 for someone on a low income, but that seems like it would be towards the far end of worst-case-scenario. And I would argue that there would be a scaling where typically, as the value of the car and therefore the loss increases, so would the income/wealth status of the individual affected. I've cobbled this together on the hoof and and it's not supported by source date, but I hope the general point makes sense. So the current situation can't continue. There's a price to pay for that. I think the price is worth paying.

The map is interactive and can show the current and revised wards Penguin68 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I don't believe this is just a change of ward name > but also of ward boundaries. 4. HMD played at their event in Brockwell Park earlier this year. I don't they, or anyone else is confirmed for 2018. They have also previously had Norman jay and Nicky Siano.
  5. I agree that the most important issue is the shocking assault on the OP's mum and like Rendel I don't think any malice or racism was intended. But as the choice of words has come under the spotlight, I think it has to be said that it's not the best choice of phrasing. Skin colour can be used perfectly reasonably as an identifier in all sorts of situations, but the use of it in a negative headline which doesn't appear to be in the context of identifying the perpetrator isn't great. I hope they catch the one that did this and wish the OP's mum a speedy recovery.

  7. Banning seems a bit extreme but I share your disgust at the amount of dogs' mess on the pavements
  8. I can echo the positive comments on Bessemer. We have two there and are very happy. In my opinion, distance is not THE most important thing, not by a long stretch. But if you live in Heber Road, that's a fair old trek there and back twice a day. And with a school with a good reputation on your doorstep... Also would you get Bessemer from Heber Road? The catchment radius has retraced steadily over recent years I think.
  9. Slow day is it Bob?

When you say 'them' in that sort of context, it creates an impression that you see cyclists as one big indistinguishable group, all sharing the same negative characteristics that you experienced earlier today. It's not a great road to go down...
  11. I used to live near LL and now live close by to PR. Commute for me (City) is easier from where I live now. I mainly cycle but am talking about the days when I commute by public transport. Overground to Shoreditch and British Rail to Elephant, Blackfriars or Victoria means plenty of options. BTW, unless you are north of East Dulwich Road, Peckham Rye is more than ten mins walk away. But, the buses are very frequent so can be at the station in around that time. I miss living near all the shops etc, but I think I'd miss the proximity to the park if we switched back. I think it's probably a bit quieter near the park, but guess that changes road by road.
  12. Oh dear - that is truly awful and worthy of a thread in it's own right!! I am flabbergasted. "My mum was born and bred in Gants Hill, and I?ve lived in Hackney for the last 10 years" is she for real??
  13. I don't think ED had many Palace fans back then, so I would doubt that. It always used to be a predominately Millwall area, but I guess a lot of those people have moved on. And due to Palace's continued tenure in the Premiership and family reputation, a lot of people who have moved in more recently, have adopted them as their team.. malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Did Millwall drink in one pub and Palace another, > did they meet for a punch up or is just a myth > about how rough the area was 30 years ago
  14. I'd be interested to know how may offenders Southwark have prosecuted under the existing legislation. My guess would be none, or close to none. I appreciate resources are stretched, but if they had a two-day purge on this once every couple of months, a few fines issued and publicised might go some way to changing the behavior of the small majority of dog-owners in question.
  15. XIX - Some of Blah Blah's assertions may be based on being able to visit the horses' stabling area, which is open to the public. As for grazing and roaming, I understand their horses have access to the common. As far as most people seem to see it, the horses and budgies at Zippo's are treated at least as well as other similar captive/domesticated animals would be. I get that some people may be against keeping any animals in captivity, and I think that's a reasonable view for someone to hold. But it doesn't seem to pertain specifically to Zippo's, so maybe a more general Lounge thread on animal welfare in the UK would be a better place to discuss that.
  16. Erm.. it's a boulangarie! If they felt the need for inspiration on how to run their business, they might look somewhere closer to home than Oz... 17. We have two at Bessemer and are very happy with it.
  18. More gently tongue in cheek tbh than heavy irony I think the premises in question has been vacant and boarded up for quite a while, so would rather have a new pizzeria than that any day... 19. So it looks like we have a much-needed new pizza place opening up in Peckham Rye, a couple of doors up from Mr Bao. Voodoo Rays - they have branches in Shoreditch and Dalston apparently.
  20. Shadwell Army!!
  21. Yep, I heard them. Wasn't sure where they were coming from but we live close by. They didn't go on for that long I didn't think. Was it a post Eid celebration??

  23. Jess from Funky Moves did our daughter's fifth birthday party earlier this year. It was great and all the kids really enjoyed it. 07810 431101 [email protected]
  24. Anyone who is making the argument, explicitly or otherwise against a six-year old cycling on the pavement needs to take a good look at themselves in my opinion.
  25. Though not necessarily the recall capacity for numbers...
