There are a few things you can do - but mainly to prevent it spreading. The obvious thing is handwashing - with soap and water rather than just alcho-rub after all nappy changes/cleaning vomit etc. The thing that often gets missed is to steer clear of work/activities until 48hrs after symptoms stopped. Until this point it can still be passed on. Unfortunately there are always gastroenteritis bugs around - the frequency lessens slightly over the summer but is still around, am sure if more knew/stuck to the 48hr rule there'd be less around.

little problem with your teletubbies question - there isn't a blue one (tinky-winky is purple!)

EDMummy - sometimes a nurse (and I know I've done this myself) may say to call back if any probs and tell the family when they themselves would be on shift, but typically we don't recommend this as often the nurses around won't have met/dealt with the family. Plus, especially with paediatric nursing it's a very visual assessment that's done so over the phone really doesn't work as well. (sorry to all who've read prev posts from me droning on about this - even on mat leave I can't turn the nursey bit of my brain off - even in labour I was trying to suggest to the midwife where would be best to put my drip in!).
-
Please, please don't call paeds ED for advice - this distracts nurses from families in the dept, and in a case like this the advice would be to come in as we can't assess over the phone (even with 9yrs experience I would want to see babybaldock's hand rather than advise over the phone). Sad to see you say you've a phobia of Kings now - esp as it sounds like he was treated well/appropriately.

Possible gestational Diabestes in pregnancy - any advice?
buggie replied to EmmaCC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Claire.hobbs - size of bump/baby isn't an accurate judge of GD - I didn't show/had v small bump throughout my pregnancy, and at full term my daughter was only 4lb 10oz, yet I had GD. Only 20% of recognised cases of GD result in a big baby - it isn't so much the size of the baby that causes concern, it's that the extra weight is often put on around the abdomen which can cause complications during delivery. -
Possible gestational Diabestes in pregnancy - any advice?
buggie replied to EmmaCC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you do a search for gestational diabetes in the box to the top R, the thread I started about GD should come up. I was diagnosed at 28wks and managed at Kings - I can't praise the way they do things enough - when you have your GTT,if it indicates GD you'll be seen immediately by the dietician and started on blood sugar testing - other places can make you wait anotherwk for this. The GTT is done in diabetic clinic rather than done by the MW so that's why you can't have it at the same time as your anti-d If youdo have GD the wkly joint clinic is fab - you get to see diabetic team/mw's/ obs consultant from 35wks/dietician all in a one-stop shop. Best thing is all symptoms go as soon as you have the baby. My daughter is now 4wks old and have got use to a normal diet again v quickly!! -

Congrats JB - sorry to hear it ended in a c-section, but congrats. Sanity girl - in answer to your prev request, have put photo up on the FB page x -
First weigh in today - 4oz gain on birthweight at a week old - Team Ellie are chuffed to bits and off for a celebratory nap!!

Funnel arrived and now successfully bilateral feeding/pumping... There really isn't anything better than seeing Ellie in a milk stupor and thinking I did that!! Next challenge will be to look at feeding while out and about... Giving myself a week or so to achieve that... Am finding myself on a real baby high which has taken me by surprise!
-
Thanks for thinking of us Gina - currently awaiting delivery of new funnel (should be here by 3pm - never knew a funnel would cause so much excitement!). But in the meantime, her latch continues to strengthen, she's downing the EBM I've been able to express off, but looking forward to doubling the quantity once R side is in full action! Small formula top ups are helping to settle her and ensure she makes the right start in heading up towards 5lbs - she'll be weighed tomorrow for the first time since birth so will have better idea if we've been doing well or not (realised hadn't mentioned in original post - feeding been such big issue as she was only 4lb 10oz!). By doing all feeds from the R side, have managed to stave off serious engorgement - lil bit lumpy but give them a good massage before feeding/in the shower, plus the wonderful savoy cabbage leaves (worth it alone for the look on my brother's face when I explained the cabbage smell - that it turned out only I could smell!), and no flu'y feeling - infact was full of beans this am and took Ellie out on our first girlie trip (attempting to find something girlie in "tiny" size!). Thanks for all the advice/support on this thread, has been fab to be able to pick all your brains! x

Is there anywhere locally that sells these breast friend pillows?? Even with all the pillows I've got already your doing a good job on selling it to me fidgetsmum!!!
-
rugby hold - check! bravissimo girlie - for the last 10yrs - check! (got them at 37wks). Will try bigger towel - didn't even think going bigger than a flannel might be needed! Got the larger breast shield funnel on next day delivery (but didn't order till yesterday pm) arriving tomorrow - was really annoyed they weren't in stock at mothercare - is sort of thing that when you realise you need it you need it right then! About to leap in good warm bath to hopefully express, then back to cabbage! Thanks for support/advice Gina - is much appreciated! x
-
had been using a flannel rolled up - helped a little but still couldn't see past it to assess her latch - have no way of seeing her lower lip and even someone looking on can't properly see! Have so many different pillows! Have got positioning sussed for when sat of sofa but was tricky trying to feed in bed o/n (but think that will be helped by swapping pillows. Cabbage leaves seem to have helped hugely on the R side, but still lumpy and got to wait till tomorrow to be able to use the pump on it (as got the bigger thingie coming!). MW's are visiting this am so going to talk stuff over with them as well and check there isn't anything else I'm missing!

Thanks Gina - the latching was really difficult as I'm rather big (currently J/K cup!) and wasn't able to physically reach around the areola enough to do that, plus bubs is so tiny that I can't actually see around the boob enough to check attachment. The nipple shield has revolutionised this, and last 2 feeds I've had good latches from her - but she's not taking as much as the pump could!! Hubbie is at the moment in sainsburys getting savoy cabbage, have showered and attempted to hand express (only got small amount - is so difficult given the size of the boob compared to size of my hands). Have also taken an anti-inflammatory as guessing that could at least stop the engorgement being so painful if not preventing. BTW, does breast milk make babies a bit hyperactive - Ellie hasn't fallen asleep yet after last feed (which started just after 9pm) and is due next one at around midnight (due to being so tiny gotta stick to 3hrly feeds)... she isn't unhappy, but really alert - bit annoying as I was hoping to get a sleep in myself!

Hey Guys, (Sorry this is a long prob boring post!) Well, so far so good feeding wise with lil Ellie (although is pretty much a 2 person full time job at the mo!). Due to her being so tiny latching on has been tricky (well, impossible) but seems with perserverance and nipple shields we're getting there. Milk's come in :)) and have used the pump to get milk ready to give as latch is still bit inconsistant/needing to offer top ups. But, the breast shield funnel that came with the pump (medela swing) only comfortably fits on one side - the other side is too big (getting <10mls from R side compared to nearly 100ml from L). We tried to get the bigger one but isn't available in mothercare and so is now on order to be delivered Fri. So, what do I do in the meantime?? Am thinking pump from L and offer R for feeds as via the nipple shield her latch seems to be improving, but, if I'm taking such good quantities from the L and less is going from the R am I setting myself up for mastitis/huge amounts of pain in the R breast - have called the nct br/feeding helpline but unsure if they'll get back to me tonight. Anyone have any advice/even a big funnel to lend for a few days? Haven't got engorged but think this may be that I was hand expressing for every feed to get the colostrum so was immediately aware when milk came in. Thanks so much for reading if you get this far!! x

Autumn babies club - due dates
buggie replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just quickly came on to say that my baby girl Ellie Rose arrived 1/2hr after arriving at hospital on Sunday morning! She's a diddy 4lb 10oz (esp as 39wk scan predicted she was weighing 6lb 3oz)so life is dominated by her feeding :-S so far so good, but doesn't leave any time for any other activity! If anyone else wants to take over updating the list I won't be offended! Best wishes to ladywotlunches and best of luck to jollybaby - had resigned myself to induction so spontaneous labour starting Saturday was a big surprise! -

Help! blood in baby's mouth when breastfeeding
buggie replied to Bishberro's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Is very likely the blood was from you - quite often even if you don't have obvious cracks to your nipples the amount of suction bubs uses when feeding can sometimes make un-noticable cracks bleed. Have seen several cases of babies ?vomiting blood in Paeds ED and it's turned out to be from Mum's nipples. Especially that there wasn't any blood in the vomit afterwards would say watch next few feeds and seek help if continues to worry you. If he's feeding well and weeing/pooing well then chances are he's ok. Hope this helps x -

Thank you Jollybaby ... think I've been really, really lucky - lost 1/2 stone in first few wks following diagnosis, and although bubs has doubled in size in last 12wks, I've not really put any wt on! My theory is that this has helped the insulin regain some control naturally. Obv don't want to be induced, but at the same time, it's nice to know that Tue things will start moving! -

nope.... really hoping something happens in next few days as would rather be spontaneous than induced on Tues! -
20 week scan - what do i need to bring
buggie replied to reren's topic in The Family Room Discussion
.... then tell them as soon as you get in there that you don't want to know - I've ended up having 7 scans during my pregnancy and am still in blissful ignorance!! Obv there is a small chance that bubs may have a different idea and greet the probe legs akimbo (2 colleagues have had their babies spoil the surprise for them!) but don't think it's that common/if the chaps doing the scan know you don't want to know they can quickly move the probe!
