Knowledge......ignorance is bliss?
buggie replied to let-them-eat-cake's topic in The Family Room Discussion
... but it doesn't go on to explain how effective that is. Having been involved in stillborn resuscitation, (the ones I've been involved in were home births where the baby was then rushed to hospital) The monitoring had been intermittent so the dips in heart rate possibly weren't noticed (am sure the guide starts by explaining the fetal heart rate/patterns that occur with distress) and so resustiation initiated (at home and con't on way in). It has very poor outcomes - either with us being unable to get spontaneous breathing/circulation back or with the baby having varying degrees of HIE (hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy). Horrible situations for all involved, but important that the family know/see all has been done, especially as often everything will have been happening while mum is still on her way in (Mum can't be moved as quickly so a 2nd ambulance brings Mum while the 1st brings baby in asap). -
There's a pair of comedians (Cardinal Burns) who do a skit as turkish cab drivers where they sing a song to the Kings of Leon song, only it's changed to "My tax disc's expired" - maybe could persuade kids that's what their saying (sing it over the top of the actual tune and it fits perfectly!). @Keef - the episode of Friends where Ross and Rachel sing that to baby Emma was on again the other day - do think it could add something to the Bare Groove set list!! :))

Is it a bad time to move a toddler into a junior bed now?
buggie replied to Sanne Panne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've not got direct experience of this, but would have thought that a junior bed with side guard added would be most beneficial - can imagine a cot bed would only last another couple of years before it needed changing to a bigger bed (although on the other hand baby would then be using it). The guard could help hold toys in so she could still have them in bed with her. I was 8yrs when my sister (then 3mths) moved into my room - don't remember us disturbing each other much! -
East Dulwich to Uxbridge - advice please
buggie replied to KidKruger's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Is Uxbridge on the metropoliton line?? If so, there's a train from Peckham Rye which goes up through Blackfriars and onwards - could change at Farringdon for the metropoliton line - don't know how long it would take from Farringdon to Uxbridge but Peckham Rye to Farringdon is approx 17 mins. -
Having seen families bringing their little boys in with similar to paeds ED, think having a look and if needed a scan will be done - what they might do is try shining a pen torch at the lump to see if it's solid or fluid filled (alot of these turn out to be hydrocels - fluid filled harmless cysts). Am sure your GP has advised you on signs to watch for, but if there appears to be sudden swelling/it looks red and is painful to touch then either return to GP or attend ED.

Breech birth - would you be up for it?
buggie replied to littleEDfamily's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Fuschia - the breach in confidentiality by your midwife is very concerning to me... especially as she specifically looked up the records rather than knowing as she was involved. Also it is a very black and white view - she didn't add whether there had possibly been further problems/issues with the pregnancies that could have caused this (and could be why they'd needed closer monitoring/medical care). Think it's very unfair to suggest that twin II died in both cases just because they had a more medical route/didn't have their own midwives with them. -
Fuschia - yes was talking about the broken leg rather than epidural. Fair-do's on why you didn't want an epidural... It's near the bottom of my ideas for pain relief in labour for similar reasons, but not going to rule it out (got a feeling my birth plan will be more like a choose your own adventure style flow chart with all the differentials I'm thinking of!!)
-
Guessing you've never seen anyone with a broken leg needing manipulation!! ... ok the broken leg thing was a bad analogy to take so literally (I see the idea though and agree Keef :)) - without some kind of pain relief/sedation you wouldn't get near a leg or arm needing manipulation... and is really wrong to suggest that pain relief/sedation could cause further complications - if anything they prevent it (ie aid getting full circulation/sensation back to the limb). I dislocated my knee (while at work - oh the irony) several years back and it stayed out of place - had to have entonox and IV morphine before they manipulated it back into place (i was asking for a full anesthetic!!). When I told my friend (who a few wks earlier had had a 36hr labour with her baby's back against her spine which ended in an emergency c-section) her reaction was "OMG that's the most painful thing you can do!" which kind of gets us back to labour pain being a bit different to other types of pain. One of the few quotes I can remember word for word from my nurse training is "pain is what the patient says it is, when they say it is, and as bad as they say it is" (can't remember who wrote it, and may have fudged the final bit of it!). Think that fits labour and broken legs!!

How to describe the shock of the first 3 months...
buggie replied to bee74's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This sounds really interesting - esp as am due in Sept, but could also be useful to help support new mums as I'm a paeds nurse (how useful I'd be with baby brain could be questionable though!). Have already signed up for local NCT classes at the end of Aug, but meeting other mum's to be would be fab - is slightly scary that so many of my friends are already sure I'll be fab and a natural due to my job - am sure there's bit more to being a mum than what I do already! -
I know of someone who keeps a list of interesting patient names we come into contact at work (a local Emergency Dept) because their local I really can't share any full names on here, but we've seen some stunners - have seen several Channel's when I think their parents were aiming for Chanel!

I was really worried I'd see what it was during my 20wk scan (being a nurse and having seen scans of other body parts before). However, whether due to my post night shift fog or us telling the research fellow as soon as we got into the room that we didn't want to know we came away clueless, without having any "if you don't want to know the result look away now" moments!!

The case you link to really doesn't have much bearing on the concerns raised in this thread, apart from creating more fear in those expressing concern on this thread. It does though reinforce the point I made earlier that stranger dog attacks are very rare - if anyone can't follow the link and has only seen Jalapeno's description, this links to the story of the child attacked and unfortuately killed by his uncle's (illigal dog) while at his Nan's - not (if some were worried) a random attack on a child in a park as has been talked about on here.

Primary school place allocation chaos has started!

prdarling Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Buggie > Normally about a third of places are taken up by > siblings - this year it's well over half. It must > surely be down to last year's bulge class? But as I've already said, unless all of those are siblings of children in last years bulge class (which would mean a heck of a lot of families having 2 children only a school year apart) the bulge class can't be to blame. Surely a more likely suggestion would be the fact that families are more likely to have been static due to the recession/drop in house prices locally - thus families that would have been moving on are instead hanging on for a few more years and so have further children starting school. Surely the fact that children are unlikely to have siblings joining the school the year after they've started themselves is another reason the bulge classes are rotated to other schools (as well as the issues regarding limited space for extra classes within schools). -

I'd be up for meeting up (shifts dependent) am on annual leave week after next so could meet up pretty much any day then! Can't quite believe I'm half way through the pregnancy already! -

buggie replied to tallgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Are there really that many people who have children in consequtive school years?? Surely for last years bulge class to be causing this years high sibling intake this would be needed? Could it be lots of people live near a school of choice until their eldest gets in, and then moves bit further out (there is a noticable drop in house prices even within 1/4 mile of the SE22 border) knowing they can get the siblings in, rather than using the closer school? Surely this is something which should be addressed - there seems to be a common theme that actually there are very few "bad" schools locally, just a lot which need the local parents to believe in them more (eg GG last year). -
I remember my Mum having something similar happen with my sister when she was a baby - our (then) 5yr old brother and his friend were watching and thought it was the most fantastic thing ever... think she shot up in their estimations!!
