Madly orange munching pregnant mums!?????
buggie replied to littleEDfamily's topic in The Family Room Discussion
i don't normally like beer/lager (well, apart from shandy) but since pregnant have had real jealous streaks when hubbie has had lagers = have ended up buying non-alcoholic becks/cobra. Think I got so fed up of drinking soft drinks and so a "savoury" fizzy drink is bliss! -
Having worked as a paeds ED nurse for over 8yrs, can I reassure you all that I've never seen a dogbite/history of a child being bitten by any dog attacking them in their buggy, and very few bites from "strange" dogs. Went on safari last year and we were advised that within the jeep we were seen as a big jeep rather than humans/food. Wonder if a similar thing could be true of babies in buggies. While not wanting to encourage children to pet strange dogs, think installing fear in them about all dogs would be counter productive.

Apparently Harriet Harman has said that there could be a legal basis for the election result to be challenged due to the amount of people across the country being turned away from polling stations/the inconsistency of returning officers response to late queues.... so we might have to do it all again!

hmm... you'd think that would be up my street (with my user name!) but my heart is set on an icandy cherry!

Ooo - is that 10% off everything till Monday or just particular lines??
-
Oh must have misread leaflet - I saw it briefly (while in nights mode fug) and thought it was going to be 24hrs Mon am to midnight Fri, then 7-midnight on Saturday... not that I have an early hr shopping habit!

Does anyone know of a chemist open today in the area?
buggie replied to The Nappy Lady's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just wanted to add - Westburys on Streatham High Road isn't 24hrs but is open til midnight 365 days a year. Also don't feel you have to use capol/calprofen - the non-branded paracetamol and ibuprofen syrups are just as affective (and what's used in paeds ED!!). Hope the little nappies are feeling better soon!! x -
Good Nursery's and Schools in SE22
buggie replied to charlotte endacott's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Bessemar Grange is the nearest school to East Dulwich Grove and think it has a nursery - think if you search within the forum there are some very positive comments from parent's using the school/nursery - from what I've read on here, it's had lots of funding/new building and has fantastic nursery/early years education. -
Is it Guthrie wing you're thinking of?? That's the private/international patients ward - don't know if they'd take maternity cases as it's staffed by nurses rather than midwives.
-
Have called Southwark - we're on the roll and cards should be with us by Fri, but they have confirmed that if cards haven't arrived we'll still be able to vote so long as we take proof of id/address with us... phew!!
-
Just wanted to check - has anyone received their polling cards yet?? Not had ours through yet and sure we normally get them earlier that this, am sure we're signed up to vote (although how can I check?).

I'm a left hander and the thought of using my knife in the left hand leaves me cold - using knife and fork the "correct" way round makes complete sense to me as my left hand is always the one going to my mouth - whether using spoon, chopsticks, fork on it's own or with a knife - I always think it's odd R handers use their L hand if using knife and fork otherwise use their R hand!

Any expectant mums (and dads) want to meet for coffee?
buggie replied to HOMum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Completely forgot about this - not going to be able to make it now :'( maybe see you if you meet up again. -
icandy are available from Tommy's on Rye Lane and in John Lewis - on the website it does say they limit product to shops where you can be given all the after sales advice, so their not available online.

Old Kent road is much closer than Croydon - I'd estimate it's about ten mins away from ED!!
-
4th May - saw poster on the way by the other day - am hoping they have special offers the week they open as will prob be good to get a few bits!
-
The nastiest common accident (as opposed to the nice common accidents :-S) I see in ED is fingers shut in the hinge end of doors - there are foam discs with slits to go over doors (put them up high so DD/DS's can't pull them off!!) which would prevent nasty finger squishes/fractures/nails ripped off.

To be fair, if rooms are limited you can understand why they try and keep a few free. For example - a mother who's had a still birth/a particularly traumatic birth (as it sounds like yours may have been Bumpkin) or if baby is prem and not able to stay with Mum - how upsetting would it be to be then surrounded by everyone who'd managed to fully bake their babies. It could be all well and good hassling and getting a room, but if you've pushed for it rather than it being offered, I'd guess you'd be top of the list to be moved out should someone who's need was greater pop up. While it sounds like the labour tour hasn't got the balance quite right, in a pretty short time their probably trying to keep parent's feet on the ground and warn them of potential problems so that these don't come as a shock during labour (or should rose tinted glasses be applied and then everyone could say how it wasn't as nice as they thought it would be?).

baby eczema - dermatologist test for allergies?
buggie replied to marscapone's topic in The Family Room Discussion
.... that does back up my point regarding atopy: Roughly, it's never been clear what has caused the atopy that links eczema/asthma/hayfever - this protien looks like it could be the link which could lead to better understanding/treatment of all the conditions. -
baby eczema - dermatologist test for allergies?
buggie replied to marscapone's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Treated or untreated eczema doesn't increase/decrease asthma risk. Asthma, eczema and hayfever often come together (atopic illnesses). The management of these doesn't directly affect any of the other symptoms and it can be that you have one without ever having the other two. I would theorise though that if a family don't take the preventative measures to try and treat the eczema well (ie ignoring advice to use emolients or not recognising worsening skin) then it could be said they might have a similarly lax attitude to managing asthma symptoms (if the child had them) thus causing potentially worse symptoms than would have with better management. (hope this makes sense - bit tired!!) -
I'm really liking the look of the stokke one - it's beautiful and doesn't look so big it'll take over the room (some of the cots i've looked at seem as big as a bed!)and love the way it grows. There seem to be bargins on ebay - and easy to get new mattresses on ebay too.

Am amazed you landed at 5am as on a flight to London. I took a few mths back the pilot had said that we weren't allowed to land until 6am. (flew over the Thames rather than East Dulwich :)).

No night flights would be all well and good, but where are the planes taking off from?? With the distances covered and differing time zones it smacks of NIMBY-ism... don't want the UK's sleep disturbed so lets disturb another countries sleep by taking off in the middle of the night there. I heard a plane in the early hours of this morning but only because the foxes fighting/mating had already woken me from slumber!

Am not criticising the want to do first aid training (as a nurse I am well aware how few do have training and how important it is). I was purely expressing concern that the curriculum for a 3hr class seemed alot and that I was unsure how much practice of the most important skills (the BLS and choking) would be offered to the parents attending.
