Do you ask for seat on train/bus?
buggie replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
looking at the thread we are talking about having asked when in "that" situation... and at the end of a 12hr A&E shift I was definitely knackered... but if fuelled rather than quashed my assertiveness! But I would never target one person to ask - I'd ask generally but in a loud cheerful voice (I know, I have no shame!!) -
I've had loads of scans during my pregnancy due to a couple of things. One of the only scans my hubbie couldn't make I came out feeling like I'd been a bit of a spare part, that things hadn't been explained to me (they'd repeatedly taken the same measurements without thinking to explain to me that they were having probs getting results they were happy with) and so even though on paper things were still going ok I didn't feel reassured and was worried. Anyhoo, roll on 4wks and I'm back for another scan (with hubbie) and the same research fellow comes in to do the scan - well, I couldn't hold back and made it clear how uncomfortable I'd been last time (felt a little bit bad at how much of a go I had but hubbie thought I'd not been too bad :-$). To be fair to him he took on board and explained what had happened and went on to very clearly explain everything he'd been doing. Don't think it's their intention to leave Mums and Dads in the dark so do question/ask for explaination if unsure of what their up to/why.

Do you ask for seat on train/bus?
buggie replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Was talking to hubbie and friends about this earlier - another thing to consider is how likely it is that people are going to look up each time a train/bus stops and look out for people to offer chairs to - esp if their engrossed reading something/plugged into an ipod, sleepily gazing out of the window! All agreed that they had no probs with someone asking for a seat (and would be happy to oblige). -
I'm finding myself living in my glider chair already (39wks pregnant) keep feeling nauseous and some how the glide of the chair eases this!!

Saw mum giving birth in car outside King's this morning!
buggie replied to kerry.finlay's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hmm, isn't unusual - had to run out to a couple of cars before with babies being/having been delivered outside A&E!! A v good friend had her baby in the carpark at Kings, but it was about 10pm in the evening so not as much of a crowd. Am sure having had your GTT beforehand hadn't helped your emotions Kerry - hope the result was ok x -
Do you ask for seat on train/bus?
buggie replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've had no worries in getting onto buses and if the seats have been taken asking out loud for a seat - especially when I was still doing 12hr shifts... am scarily wobbly when standing on moving buses (especially when said bus is whizzing round the corner from Denmark hill onto Champion Hill!) so try and get a seat asap. Have always had someone willing to give a seat up (and been congratulated on speaking up too!). There aren't martyr medals for those who stay stood up until it's unbearable and am sure most of the time we don't need much encouragement to be assertive! -
Hmm... but trent69, they'll still have been woken up by it, which understandably is the bigger problem parents are reporting.

20 week scan - what do i need to bring
buggie replied to reren's topic in The Family Room Discussion
... nope!! Can tell head/spine and at 12/20wks could tell limbs but later scans are really hard as it's quick flashes of bits that you see (kinda like a jigsaw of the baby!) At 28wks I thought bubs was sucking on it's hands only for the dr to tell me it was sucking it's own toes!! Do get really stiff neck trying to crane round the arm of whoever is doing the scan - they could really do with another monitor in easy eyeview for us. -

20 week scan - what do i need to bring
buggie replied to reren's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you say that you don't want to know, they will respect that and try to not show you (I've had to have 6 scans and have managed to remain in blissful ignorance). BUT, your baby may have other ideas - 2 of my colleagues have found out at the 20 wk scan as when the probe was put onto their bellies their babies had their legs akimbo flashing all they had... at 20wks its too early to try and palapate beforehand to work out what bit of the baby is where! I'm really happy that what bubs is will be a surprise, but have also thought that if it was to be obvious on the scan I wouldn't have minded! -
Guardian piece on school applications
buggie replied to grabot's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Don't think he was implying stupidity - more that if there were 71 different languages within the school, the chances were that there was quite a range of understood/spoken english within the school/within classes which puts additional stress and strain on the teachers as to where to pitch classes. Thus if your child had english as a first language/spoke understood english well they may not get as much out of classes because of the needs of the other children with language difficulties were needing to be accommodated - and the author was saying that he had problems with the idea of knowingly putting his child into that situation. Was an interesting piece of research out the other week which said that when broken down by ethniticy, white children from the lowest socio-economic groups did worse at school. Those in the same socio-economic groups from Africa/Asia etc out performed them and had a much higher sense of needing to work hard/try as hard as possible at school. The issue of "turning" to religion for schooling isn't just a London thing. We had to go out to the home counties for a christening yesterday so that in another year or so an application to their C of E primary school of choice would be looked upon favourably. -

Newborn hearing screening - does it make sense?
buggie replied to Sanne Panne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Think the 8mth hearing test is the old style distraction test - where a HV would sit in front of the baby silently engaging them in play and another would stand behind with a rattle and rattle it checking that the baby turned it's head. Saw this done when I was a student nurse and was completely unsurprised that it turned alot of false positive/false negative results as often the baby would become engrossed in play and ignore the rattle, or would sense someone was behind them and turn their head regardless of noise. The otto acostic test (if I recall the naem correctly) which is now offered at approx 8wks gives far more accurate results, and, if recognising a problem with hearing allows multidisiplinary intervention/review to ensure disruption to the babies development/speech and language is minimised. I'll have no probs in taking bubs along for this test (obv once it's born!) even if they do seem to be responding to voice, just to be sure that all is ok or if there was a problem, to enable action to be taken to minimise the long term affects it could cause. -
Area near East Dulwich train station (West)
buggie replied to showa58taro's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ok eater81, but were any of those incidents random attacks?? Unfortunately most of these incidents are carried out by people known to the victims. showa58taro, I hope you have the noggin to see that the majority of posts on this forum (not just this thread) talk about the great things in this area, and that the regular grumblers have been posting on here so long that you start thinking they can't dislike it that much round here! -
Am surprised so many people are surprised NHS hospitals appeal for charitable donations - Great Ormond Street are hugely blatent about this (to the point where I've had people assume I must work there as where else in London do children go for hospital care!) and thus earn an amazing amount to bump up what they get from the government/private patients (and get every celeb visiting/xmas pressies from Hamleys for their patients). Would be very surpised if half of all SCBU (special care baby unit) patients were there due to dehydration - when I did student placements prematurity was the overriding reason. However, the SCBU unit is split into several different rooms (intensive care/high dependancy/nursery) and it could be that in the nursery room (babies needing least intensive treatment) that babies in there were being treated for dehydration. The ?1000 a day figure would be for babies needing the highest level of care. The Avastin costs ?21,000 per patient and in studies added less than 3 months to patients lives avastin - while it could be argued that for an extra 12 wks of life anything that extends life has some worth, would be interested to see what quality of life it offered patients - especially with it giving them such a short reprive. There was an interesting doc on telly the other year about how NICE works - seems they spend their life stuck between a rock and a hard place, is very easy for the media/others to be critical but strangely they never seem so critical of the drug companies who make humdinging profits off the back of these drugs.

read somewhere once that 75% of all colds in the world are had by the under 5's - going by that you'll have a few more years yet - sorry! On the plus side, he'll have built up lots of antibodies to fight against bugs. I remember always being snuffly when I was a child and rarely get colds/never get taken that ill with them now.

Have heard somewhere (possibly even this thread/forum) before that you can ring the Boots in departures and pre-order milk cartons for collection so after security thus not causing probs with the fluid restriction... might be worth checking with them as might make it bit easier/less stressful.
