  1. James, I agree with you up to a point. There are plenty of non smartphone-owning OAPs who use Iceland: it's them I fear for, not the people you are talking about. I like shopping at Iceland: the service is good, basics are cheap and good value and it does provide a different kind of "shopping experience". Lots of people bang on about diversity these days; it ought to apply to the choice of grocery shops too!
  2. Hmmm. I think scores of flats for people to live in, and the associated regeneration it might well bring, trumps the disappointment over a slightly marred view of a few thousand blow-ins between June and September. Frank's will be over in a few years anyway, once the hep cats discover that Upper Norwood is where it's at.
  3. Also, a place that offers Reformer Pilates classes (not just private tuition) - ESPH offers small classes on reformer machines.
  4. How predictable that you respond chippily and completely fail to recognise that you've done something wrong. You were littering, you didn't ask for permission and you will leave the posters to rot and fall and drip ink in the rain. Just because you've done a bit of good does't give you the right to mess up the landscape for others. The mural took time to paint, is lovely to look at and is now much less so. Poor show. Do the right thing and remove them.
  5. I hope you'll be clearing up after you. The length of LL is littered with the posters: on trees, on walls, on other people's property. You've ruined the lovely mural at the ED Picture House! Are you for real? Just because you're raising money for a charity doesn't mean you can make the high street of the community you say you are a part of an eyesore. Good job on raising money. Bad job on promoting it properly.
  6. I think the urban wildlife garden has chickens: 28 Marsden Road, Peckham, London, SE15 4EE. 020 7252 9186

  8. Karmadoza, a Canadian band that covers stuff by The B-52's (6060-842) or
  9. An outdoor facility, especially if it offers food, drink and a place for "community" activities would be a good companion for the trad indoor pool at the DLC. It'd work, but only if it were heated and open year round, early till late (at least in the summer) and if the impetus to get it off the ground continued well past any initial hoopla. I hope it happens: good luck!
  10. (Hunger) pang activity
  11. It provides figures and testimony rather than pro and anti anecdotal "evidence". The take-away, as they say in the US, is is that the best way to avoid pedestrians being knocked over by cyclists on the pavement is to not allow cycle riding on the pavements.
  12. I saw Right Said Fred (the two bald ones, at least) at Luca's (RIP) two months back. Ten minutes later I saw Jim Broadbent sitting outside Mon P'tit Chou. LL is Stellar Street!
  13. I agree with EDShorty's nuanced and mature view and feel, sadly, that those who are able to pay will clamour for free parking whilst the really need ones, who have to come via taxi or public transport, wont' be refunded. It is not that simple! I think a flat fee of a pound per two hour visit is a reasonable cost. Money doesn't grow on trees, and neither does NHS provision.
  14. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-28945834 Special attention LD re cyclist (Should really be in The Lounge but posted here by mistake.)
  15. Landy10, James - Yes, the area outside the parade of shops opposite ESPH/ED Picture House (to be) was particularly bad. I know we don't have such downpours regularly but it's not acceptable. There's a big dent opposite Goodrich School on Goodrich Road too (near where the council earlier did fix a broken flagstone, to be fair).
  16. The persistent rain yesterday really showed up the pavements on and around LL as really sub-par. Lots of dents, dimples and cracks were apparent, with water pooling inches deep. Is it the clay soil that doesn't provide solid enough support for the paving stones, or is it crappy workmanship or a mixture of the two? Anyone...anyone...?
  17. Confirms what I'd heard from a trader on NXR. Gambatte kudasai, tsunami!
  18. Saute garlic and leek (slowly), add a tin of lentils and a tin of butter beans, simmer slowly and mix in a glug of olive oil or butter before serving, either on its own or as a bed for smoked haddock or sausages.
  19. What about seagrass and its ilk? It's durable, easy to lay and affordable (but some say don't lay it on stairs lest it gets slippery with use).
  20. Banning placcy bags is a great way of conning yourself into thinking that you're "doing your bit". Better by far to buy less of the crap (including food that is eventually wasted) to fill bags - jute, paper or polythene - in the first place. If you can get energised about reusing carrier bags (it really doesn't take that much effort) then try doing the same regarding car use, buying too much stuff (where "stuff" = practically anything) and overheating one's house and overchilling one's food.
  21. A project a few years ago tackled this. Search "Monica" and "SNUB" on this forum for more. It was reasonably successfull but until there is a national (or London) ban I doubt most people will voluntarily go along. SE22/15/23/21 etc are not typical of the UK trend.
  22. House on Adys Road, near the school, went for a million and got a million (according to a source).
  23. Pickle - I hope you tell them to get on the road. Don't stand for it!
  24. There are plastic bags over the 20mph limit signs at the junction of Goodrich and Barry Roads. Is this meant to be the case?
