resurrecting an old thread I know - but in light of recent ticket fiascos I stand by all the points I made here - even if Marmora Man thought I was especially shouty But even back then, I didn't think people would have to spend 8 hours to official ticket seller only to be told THEY were tripling the ticket price now. Madness I have seen "sensible" commentators say things like "I don't think the government should be getting involved in the sale of Oasis tickets" which seems like a fair starting point. But it isn't a starting point - where we are now is farcical and the sale of tickets by near-monopolies needs intervention by someone
  2. Sparts coming onto a Brexit thread where people are currently pointing out just how wildly wrong Brexit in chief Dan Hannan continues to be, only to go “did I mention Brexit?” Is disingenuous at best none of his predictions in 2016 were ever going to come true But people believed him and he continues to get paid for his garbage about “we hold the upper hand” As he is making a tit of himself yet again this weekend, always funny to revisit Dan hannan’s pre referendum Brexit predictions for 2025 Is it possible to read and not cringe? https://reaction.life/britain-looks-like-brexit/

  4. I wonder if he has form as one of our more "delightful" posters on here over the years
  5. kwasi on telly today complains about eu punishing brits and that maybe the uk should do the same to them ignoring not only a) uk govt pre Brexit approved this olan b) his government set exactly same requirements to enter U.K. the people who pushed for and enacted Brexit are the very people who still don’t have a clue https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta aye Mal - but you would think the people who pushed for this wouldn’t have the gall to simultaneously complain about it https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13760813/amp/holidaymakers-Brussels-Brits-need-visa-waiver-travelling.html Don’t forget to fill out your forms next year either https://www.thetimes.com/uk/transport/article/britons-travelling-europe-visa-summer-2025-lr8xjm6m5

  7. Don’t forget to fill out your forms next year either https://www.thetimes.com/uk/transport/article/britons-travelling-europe-visa-summer-2025-lr8xjm6m5 TLDR: Brits will need authorisation to enter eu from next year. This isn’t some punishment - this scheme was drawn up and agree with uk when uk was a full member and so would have been subject to these checks
  8. Looks like the paywall is down for that article from FT for now if you want to go and read it
  9. sorry - it didn't paywall for me. usually googling ft + the headline will give you one free FT read a day But now when I go back it's behind paywall for me now too Trade experts like David Heinz on social media tend to break it down into threads with commentary as well many storys several months back in anticipation of checks coming in: eg https://www.euronews.com/business/2024/07/01/brexit-blooms-uk-and-eu-plant-firms-call-for-urgent-action-over-border-hold-ups
  10. meanwhile, the real daily problems caused by Brexit continue to mount up - with very little coverage or discussion https://www.ft.com/content/b23081be-1808-4936-9727-3fd0ff56f98b costs of setting up facility facility not used delays people charged for checks which don't happen because it too longer than 2 hours so waved thru absolute scenes meanwhile we have architects of the Brexit deal like Lord Frost proclaiming "we can no longer call Britain a free country" from his column in the Telegraph this week - all that upheaval and cost to "take our country back" and yet here we are with it's proponents taking to the streets and writing columns like that this was all Brexit could ever be - blank cheques which could never be cashed, houses built on sand all to appease people who could never be appeased
  11. had my first visit to The Palmerston in about 10 years last month I was happy enough with it back in 2001 when it was pretty basic and I liked it when Jamie Younger was a chef there (and yes I accept it was barely a pub at that point) - but in it's current incarnation? It's just .. nothing. In fact, all of the pubs in the neighbourhood seemed pretty sorry - EDT is obviously dealing with fallout from administration, all of the old Capital pubs (Bishop/Actress, Rye etc) are now Greene King blandstrosities.
  12. mad extrapolation based on absolutely nothin, most of which even if it happened wouldn't be a problem (the saner ones anyway - dunno what you can do with someone pretending charity shops would be wheeling out rails onto the pavement/street)
  13. it's amazing what some little englanders will get their knickers in a twist over isn't it "we're in south London!"
  14. Weird comment, but even if it wasn't.. fruit doesn't know where it is being sold and will spoil in the sun. So we can learn from countries that have more sun, rather than stating that we don't live in those countries do you see???
  15. "I don't care about whether this site is shut down or not, I know nothing about libel laws, and I want to avoid my child being abducted. " If the site is shut down then you would be cutting off a useful supply of community information. But as you proudly state, you don't care
  16. This isn’t true tho is it Mal? its genuine
  17. Interesting post by a courier today: " Want to know why pharma is so hard to get in the U.K. ? A friend of mine has been stuck since 6AM Monday at a port in the U.K. coming into the U.K. because of a problem with paperwork . In a fridge van that’s been running non stop .. It’s now Thursday"
  18. unusually, I was back in the neighbourhood this weekend, but only saw this now. I do like a Northern Monk hazy as well (I note the tills were all replaced during the week at the EDT - by administrators?)
  19. I think it’s sweet that you think prisoners serving a full sentence are currently “rehabilitated “ or “receive training” That should happen of course - but given the state of prisons (and the entire criminal justice system) after 14 years of the last lot there is zero hope (and that lot wouldn’t even believe in rehabilitation anyway) as for the options and extra guidance you suggest, who could argue. But it’s all resources and money and if we had that we wouldn’t be in this position in first place sometime we just have to make the least bad of two awful options personally however, I’m not worried about a winter crime spree
  20. just to check - when people are brewing their tea bags they aren't jut leaving for a minute or two, right? Need 4-5 mins IMV
  21. Barrys Irish teabags are my goto - Tesco sell them near me so other supermarkets may as well
  22. The glorious future we were promised is finally landing ”moar red tape! Moar charges! Moar criminals! Taste the freedom” https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jun/23/uk-says-importers-making-deliberate-errors-on-forms-to-avoid-brexit-border-charges
  23. Cheers Mal. Good post re stupidity. Sort of depends on how it’s defined. Take Steve in this article. (TLDR. Brexit is causing me massive problems. No politicians are talking about it. No I don’t want to rejoin eu or single market. I just want my problems to go away by …. Pixies?”) clearly in many ways Steve is far from stupid man. And yet he seems to think there is some magical we all of his problems can me magicked away - so on that score, it would appear he has a blind spot so large, it is making him look very silly indeed. is it helpful to call him silly or stupid? Not sure I care tbh. But he is causing millions of us problems we can do without https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c511wdnyjq9o
  24. Mal spare us. That wasn’t why Brexit happened. As any posh golf club bore in the Home Counties (definition of elite) would tell you you (correctly!) have been able to underline the folly and stupidity of corbyn’s ascent at the time. Corbyn supporters in 2024 (and oh god there are so many) can shrilly go “see!!!! That’s why Corbyn won!” it’s a totally bogus argument not as cringe as asking for the opinion of some gob living thousands of miles away for his opinion on uk life in 2024 tho Earl. You make some very good points. Is it unfair to judge people based on a complex question around a dishonest campaign? for me, it’s not unfair. People didn’t go “ooh this is a complex decision” for a variety of competing reasons they all went with an arrogant gut. For something that no government could deliver on. It wasn’t a real question. It wasn’t “should we legalise assisted dying”. That’s complex too. But is within the gift of the government but for balance I will allow more leeway for people voting in leave in 2016 than I would anyone holding similar position in 2024 (cue the contrarians who cry “Me! I voted remain in 2016 but I would vote leave now “. Reader you will find no bigger bore in the world)
  25. Some people just genuinely aren't very bright. And there will never be a shortage of people who will defend them: "Well I disagree fundamentally with Reform/Farage, but calling people thick just isn't on" But calling people thick/wrong, when the circumstances present themselves, is the only correct course of action. And if you do intend to vote Reform, being called thick is the BEST thing you could be called - because the alternative is much much worse
