ok, I meant whisky and I've edited the initial post too. Thanks for the top tips, I really wish I liked the stuff, perhaps I will when I mature a bit more.

30 year old Glenfarclas, I just looked that up, sounds great but a bit out my price range! My budget's about ?40.

I want to buy a close friend a lovely bottle of single malt whisky for his birthday tonight. I know nothing about the stuff apart from the fact it tastes rough, so I'm looking for recommendations about what to buy and where to buy it. I want to give it to him tonight so online/mail order's out the question but I can get into town if I need to go somewhere special. Thanks in advance. edited to remove the 'e' from whiskey before some pedant notices, oh, too late. [edited once]

dawsons heights built on roman burial ground

That's the one. When get to the top of Champion Hill just before going past Sainsburys, you see it on the hill in the distance, looking like a communist hotel/hospital building. -

ratty Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What actually is Dawson Heights, where is it and > why is it so special? I have always wondered. :) It's the big building up on the hill on the Forest Hill side of ED, here's a panorama of the view from there, with East Dulwich in the foreground on New Years Day this year. Here's a link to a larger 3.5Mb version, it's compressed at 40% jpg to keep the file size down so the quality's not brilliant but you can still see your bedroom window. Maybe. And you can see the Dome, Wembley stadium, the wheel, Earls Court, St Pauls etc, it really is worth going up there on a clear day. I didn't see any dead Romans though. ryedalema, I'd love to take a picture from right at the top, as would a few others I'm sure, so if that's ever possible please let us know, we'd be eternally grateful. -
Sorry, I thought it was about the other water main repair that is being discussed, that's one reason why we like people writing descriptive titles instead of vague ones so we don't get confused. I'll get Admin to amend it.

oops, sorry for having this thread locked, I thought it was about the other water main repair. [edited once] -
This has been put up on the Met police's website and, as there was a discussion about it on here*, some forum users maybe able to help.... Police appeal for information following supermarket fight Police in Southwark are appealing for information after they were called to Sainsbury's at Dog Kennel Hill at around 2.30pm on Sunday 3 January 2010, to reports of a group of men fighting and causing a disturbance in the store. One man was taken to hospital for treatment to a head wound. Detective Constable Darren Swadling from Southwark CID said, "We have already spoken to a number of witnesses who were in Sainsbury's at the time of the incident, but are appealing to those we have not yet heard from to contact police so that we can establish exactly what happened." If you witnessed this incident or have any information, please contact DC Swadling on 020 7232 6145 or speak to crimestoppers on 0800 555111 if you wish to remain anonymous http://cms.met.police.uk/met/boroughs/southwark/04how_are_we_doing/appeals/police_appeal_for_information_following_supermarket_fight *(As the other post about was Lounged I thought I'd start a new one, hope that's ok)

I've seen a 37 bus going along ED Road about 5 minutes ago if that helps. -

It's still snowing and it doesn't look like stopping for a few hours http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/se/london_forecast_weather.html The snow is settling on side streets like Worlingham Avenue, I would say come home now (if you can) to avoid too much hassle later. [edited once] -
It was more an upholding of the original ban but the complaints sealed it. Why didn't he just wait a few weeks and come back gracefully instead of ruining it for himself and upsetting his friends on the forum?

It's been snowing constantly for about an hour now in East Dulwich. It's only light snow but it might be the wrong sort of snow for public transport.

suzyq Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > fire engines ... - why don't they just > use the double gates and drive down the green if > they need to reach a property?? Assuming this isn't a wind-up, it's a daft idea. It's simply a case of fire engines can't get to properties so the council do something about it. -
I understand Mick Mac, and to be honest I'm not easily offended so I'm not really a good yardstick to use. The minority issue is one we take into account (not forgetting those who say they like him are a minority) but the forum's meant to be fun and useful for East Dulwich and it's looked after for being that. When it becomes a pain in the arse to run because someone consistently offends people in the Lounge then they have to go. The amount of effort it takes to warn him, investigate his posts, explain that there have been complaints, ban him, let him back, warn him again etc etc (9 times last year) really makes running the forum frustrating. Anyway it's time for bed and here's hoping for pub lunch and igloos tomorrow.

I can work from home anyway so a pub lunch in the EDT and igloo building/snowball fight on Goose Green could be order of the afternoon if people are up for it.

The "report this post" link is for people to report offensive posts so Admin and the team can act, think of it as a legal requirement, it's not for people to tell the management whether they like other users or not. There's more than 12,000 registered users on this forum and that's more than enough to deal with, having one user who persistently causes complaints is one too many. Sorry Mick Mac, I know he's a sound guy but he was warned loads and given loads of chances but he kept causing complaints. Like Keef says, it's a shame.
