I don't have kids, but need some advice...
ClareC replied to tarynlondon's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I will take 5 too, just let me know how best to get money to you. C -
Soes anyone know how long the vaccine lasts?
-
I was in two mind's whether to have it done but decided to go ahead on the basis that although my daughter is very unlikely to catch it in current circumstances, in the future when she goes to play groups / nursery / school etc there is a risk given that we won't know who will be there too and Southwark is a high risk area. Also the vaccination means you can travel eg Australia. Also, if everyone is vaccinated the disease dies - which is what happened in the UK when we were all vcaccinated as kids. Most area's in the UK no longer vaccinate as the disease is extremely uncommon, unfortunately it is not in Southwark given the high number of immigrants in the area from countries that do not have a TB vaccination programme. When we had it done it was absolutely fine, she didn't even cry. By far nice than the 8, 12 and 16 week jabs! My daughter had a small red mark which has never scabbed / turned into a lump or developed pus. No bother at all. I think most children do end up with a lump that scabs over /has pus in in time. The reaction is definitely lessor the younger the child though.

Is the vaccine as effective / beneficial as actually catching the virus?

10oz is not far short of 300ml which is a lot to express not to mention fairly time consuming to do so even if possible. I think a lot of b/f mothers would struggle to express that volume. There is also the issue that that milk would be in addition to what they are feeding their own baby so quite exhausting to do on a regular basis. It's definitely not a get rich quick plan! No idea whether you are male or female, if female whether you have expressed milk but if you can express 10oz with ease in a short period of time then my feeling is you are in the minority! Wonder what sperm donator's get paid per ounce ;-)

?15 for 10 ounces is not well paid!!!

Is it ripping off tourists? Surely price is determined by demand as usual. If supply is less than demand the price increases..... Provided the price is clear and there are no hidden costs is it really ripping off a tourist that knows the price and chooses to pay it? It's a hassle moving out of your home and you would forgo the opportunity to live here whilst the Olympics is on ....... if the remuneration isn't worthwhile, people won't allow their home's to be used and supply decreases further!

Ive a brand new pack of raspberry leaf tea if you want it :-) If you were to use castor oil and it does bring things on really fast etc as mentioned above, does that increase the risk of rupture? Definitely worth researching first, especially given that this would be your first VB. My C Section (emergency) was a good experience so for me personally I have no concerns at all about having another (elective), however, I can understand if you didn't have a good experience your thoughts on a second will be totally different. If you do go down this route make sure it definitely won't put you at higher risk :-(

Have just booked my daughter for her 12 month jabs on Monday and realised the MMR is one to be done at the appointment. I remember there was lots of hype a few years back linking it to Autism, a quick google search seems to indicate that this isnt the case any longer - has anyone researched this properly / know anything about this? Thanks C

My water's broke shortly after going to bed on my due date..... I had showered and shampooed both my dogs earlier that day! I am sure it was that that moved things along! Your welcome to borrow a dog to shower ;-)
-
my old boss (senior director of a very large company) used to bring his dog in on occasion and I took mine to work between Christmas and New Year. Ive a couple of friends who take theirs daily. Provided the dog is well behaved, most just sit under your desk then it's no hassle at all. Really depends on your boss and the company concerned. Having both a dog and a child I can categorically say theree is no comparison to bringing children to work........ children (unless much older ie teens on work experience) are disruptive to an office!

You have a better idea where cows milk has come from..... Cows are presumably either organic or not, there are no questions as to lifestyle, diet, habits and hygiene (although I appreciate the milk is pasteurised). I do question someone selling their breast milk. That said I've never had any want to try my own, but then I don't like cows milk either and was formula fed ;-)

Is Emla cream the patches they use in over 1's when taking blood / fitting a canular?

Also think about if you want any more children and what sort of age gap. If a small gap then one that can be converted to a double is a good bet!

I'm glad you said that Paps, I have noticed recently that I am getting really tired! Looking after a toddler and being pregnant is not a good combination! I found it easier working and being pregnant..... although how you manage working, being pregnant and having a toddler!!! "I" is not walking yet and I find chasing after her and having to continuously pick her up / carry her really hard work - Thought I was just being pathetic!! Ive got a date BTW number 2 is coming into the world on the 3rd May - bit later than I expected but lovely having the certainty of a date! Just hope he doesnt decide he want's out earlier than that!! East Dulwich on Cowboy Builders this Wed (Feb16)
ClareC replied to Lollipop's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I watched this on OD, it did cross my mind why on earth they had given him so much of the agreed remuneration before the job was even close to being finished. I do think it is fairly standard for builders to have some money up front, and sensible too, their own livelihood is at risk if they were to simply rely on credit! I personally was surprised when Binda was cornered at the end, I don't think I would have employed him, didn't seem unpleasant but also I dont think he could have said the right things in terms of talking about the job to be done- he was after all clueless about basic building practice! Could be the benefit of hindsite or could be that I've had a fair amount of building work done over the last 10 years, fortunately, have only had good experiences with the builders used and have always agreed staged payments. Hindsite is wonderful... I feel so sorry for the people he ripped off! Horrid situation :-( -
Thx everyone :-) sounds as though 2 slings in handluggage a must! If they still prioritise families with boarding it may just about be Ok...... I don't think there is any hand luggage allowed for the 2 infants, would be nice if the older one could have a small rucksack with some books and toys in. May email EasyJet and ask. Thanks again

Hiya, I will be having my second (a boy) on the 3rd May so am a few weeks behind you. My daughter is currently 13 months and I too am home full time. Meeting up for playdates would be good given the similiar ages :) Ps totally understand the apprehension!! We will have a 15 1/2 month gap. I'm not entirely sure how easy (or hard) the day to day stuff will be!

Baby allergic to our cats - what would you do?
ClareC replied to Layla's Mum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Glad it's all worked out well, I'm allergic to cat's too and can agree the reaction is miserable and very uncomfortable! You definitely did the right thing. -
I would second baby sensory, my daughter really enjoyed it :-) Just trying to work out how I manage to take my son (when he is born) when I will have daughter in toe too.... she will be too young to just sit quietly! hmmm

Booked a holiday at the weekend. Whereas our intention was to fly scheduled with a non budget airline since we thought this would be the easiest in terms of luggage allowance, seat allocation, facilities etc etc etc unfortnately the airport we need to fly to is very small and only served by budget airlines. We have had to book Easyjet! Apprehensive....... oh yes! It's forbidden to purchase a seat for an under 2, so we couldnt buy additional seats. Anything over 2 x 20kg bags for the 2 adult seats booked is priced to discourage (extra 3kg amounts to nearly ?50). We had to pay ?50 to take the usual luggage allowance at all which is allegedly a 50% discount. I think 40kg will be fine so am not too worried about that and can always book more weight if necessary nearer the time. What I am interested in is how people have found the whole puschair issue (the website indicates we can take one to the gate but that we will not get it back until luggage reclaim the other end), if anyone has taken car seats - are they allowed at all? Does theoir weight come out of your 20kg? and how difficult the whole non allocated seat situation is in practice - any any top tips of keeping a small baby and toddler (4months and 20 mths) happy and avoiding a potential lynch mob. Fortunately I will have my partner with me so there will be 2 adults and 2 lap babies - how do people manage alone in this situation?

Hi Gigi2000, There is quite a choice of groups and classes each week for babies and toddlers, somebody on here created a handy list which I am sure a search would surface. Although you do get to meet other mums at these activities, I personally haven't found them the best way to make friends. The friends I have made that I see regularly have been through threads on this forum and my NCT group! There are a few threads at the moment of people meeting up, going along to such meets is definitely the easiest way to make friends. My daughter has just turned one and I am due with number 2 in a couple of months, most of the mums around in my daughter's first year are back at work now so I went from knowing lots of people to the numbers decreasing significantly! Ive met a whole new set of mums from various thread on here.... SAHM, bookclub, spring babies etc Good luck and if your at a loose end and fancy coffee drop me a pm :-) * edited to finish and add sorry about sudden end to post, was posting from iphone and run out of space!!

Not great for non walkers and weather a bit unpredictable at the moment. What cafe was you thinking of? There are not many places that can accommodate a good turn out. We had a really good turn out last time and the Plough worked well, agree that when the weather is better the parks are a great place to meet.
