Camberwell Grove - road closure / opening (Lounged)
Alan Dale replied to Mr Bojangles's topic in The Lounge
And why did you enjoy watching them being made to look silly and selfish? I think it's because they live in a posher street than you do. As for lounging I think that's premature. We need to establish whether the posh lot are being unjustifiably victimised or whether there really is purely an issue with the bridge or whether its a bit of both... -

As to whether I can or can't comment then I think you'll find that I can and do. You may not take it seriously but that is your perogative. I think you're just annoyed though BJ because your street isn't as good as the Grove. At least you can always look down your nose at 'Selbourne Village'. And as for the inability of the people of Camberwell to take action other than gossip online then I accept that is a fair criticism. I posted something to that effect on Camberwellonline recently but no-one did anything about it! -

The second post on the thread refers to the residents of SE5s most desirable road and the fact they are probably happy to keep it closed. Throughout the thread thereafter there are a number of comments about how wealthy people in this area are and you don't have to be Maurice to pick up on the underlying sentiment. As for being god damned idiotic and sticking to Selbourne issues then I think you are just trying to wind me up or oppress my opinion. Either way I still think we should let the toffs back on their horses and out into the countryside to kill. With regard to the closure of the road then I would like to see it remain shut - it makes for a much more pleasant walk when I take my fellow peasants from 'selbourne village' on their through the keyhole walking tour of how the other half live. Now I'll be worried that the stragglers will be knocked down by speeding boom-boom cars. -

I wasn't at the meeting and I'm not a member of the Countryside Alliance but I can still see when people are delighting in flying in the face of the wishes of their wealthier neighbours. I'm sure you're the same crowd who killed off the countryside from your London based Old Labour strongholds. -

A traffic light will make the street a permanent traffic jam. Really cr@p idea. I think it's just posh bashing, a bit like the hunting ban. Gives the little guy a feeling of smug satisfaction that he managed to poke a finger in the eye of his more privileged overlords but in reality achieves nothing of any political or moral significance. My preference would be to pedestrianise but as that doesn't seem realistic then I'd prefer it to be a one way street flowing South to North so that drivers from ED could come to Camberwell but couldn't escape with the same ease.. -
Denmark Hill to London Bridge Closure
Alan Dale replied to Alan Dale's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
But it may be in vain. Here is the latest official response from Network Rail: Should the RUS proposals be taken forward in full, Denmark Hill will be served by more trains than today, providing a wider range of journey opportunities. The main issue affecting Denmark Hill is the future of direct services to London Bridge. The present South London Line service from Victoria to London Bridge is unlikely to be able to continue in its present form. This is because: ? The lengthening of platforms at Battersea Park to accommodate 10-car trains may require the junction there to be severed ? The loss of three terminating platforms at London Bridge Low Level, brought about by Thameslink construction, will reduce the number of trains which can terminate there. The South London Line service is, by a long way, the least heavily used of all the services which currently use the Low Level station. It will not be possible to divert it to Charing Cross without further diminishing the available capacity at London Bridge ? even if there were sufficient capacity at Charing Cross. The RUS proposes to resolve this by calling for the early implementation of the East London Line Phase 2 extension. This would enable the Victoria to London Bridge service to be withdrawn, and to be replaced with: ? A new 2 trains-per-hour service to Victoria, coming from the direction of Nunhead, and calling at Denmark Hill, Clapham High Street, Wandsworth Road and Victoria (Eastern) ? A new 4 trains-per-hour service from the East London Line to Clapham Junction, calling at Queens Road Peckham, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Clapham High Street, Wandsworth Road and Clapham Junction. For those people wishing to travel to London Bridge, this proposal replaces a 2 trains-per-hour direct service with a 4 trains-per-hour service requiring one same-platform interchange (at either Peckham Rye or Queens Road Peckham). For those people travelling to Victoria, there is no proposed alteration in frequency of service and it is likely that peak-time trains will be lengthened from their current 2 or 4 cars. For those travelling to Blackfriars, there is no proposed alteration in frequency of service. The new Blackfriars station, with an entrance on the south side of the river, may for several people provide a quicker and more attractive means of reaching the South Bank than travelling via London Bridge. For those who travel via London Bridge to Docklands, the East London Line would provide a quicker and more frequent alternative via Canada Water. For those who travel to or via Clapham Junction, the East London Line would provide a direct and more frequent service than at present. If the proposed Airtrack scheme is implemented, which would provide a direct service from Clapham Junction to Heathrow Terminal 5, it would then be possible to reach the airport without travelling through central London. -

The beauty of these forums is that you can honestly tell me that I live in a place you consider ghastly without fear of reprisal. Whilst I would like to convince you, and others, that it's not as you believe I am not interested in just having you hide your honest opinion behind a vale of politeness. That is what I would expect you to do if I met you in person. -

As I said to JohnnyM on Camberwellonline- that?s my home. You are entitled to your opinion but I?m saddened that you have such a low opinion of the village. It is a Wates development built in 1982. It is mostly 2 bed ?cottages? but there are some flats at the Western end of Allendale Close and there are a couple of detached homes at the entrance to Allendale on Love Walk. Most of the ?cottages? have garages and rear gardens with separate rear access. I actually think that the layout is great as there are lots of nooks and crannies providing privacy and there are a number of mature trees that predate the development. The one way system around Daneville Road ensures that there is no through traffic and consequently the streets are quiet enough for the local kids to play out on their bikes. Whilst I accept that there are prettier houses in the area I think that the Village is a functional and a very pleasant environment in which to live. No offence taken by the way! http://www.camberwellonline.co.uk/2007/10/doing-the-windsor-walk-oi/#comment-49765 -

I expect there is more traffic on Bellenden with Camberwell Grove closed. Got to be good for trade down there. Frisco- I would be interested in enhancing my own houseprice but have no interest in enhancing those on Camberwell Grove. I also think that without on street parking and car access house prices along there would be more likely to fall. I am a house price whore so I understand why you would accuse me of considering this ahead of the best use of the street but in this case I don't see that Selborne Village values will be affected. No offence taken! -

Traffic lights might reduce traffic but they will mean that the reduced traffic stands still on CG rather than passing through. Turning the street into a traffic jam has to be the worst case. Frisco - road closure such as this have happened elsewhere. Daneville Road for example has been closed off in the middle which makes for a much quieter Selborne Village. There is still however significant pedestrian traffic through the village as it provides a short cut from the shops to South Camberwell. I think it is important to separate the issue of traffic from gated communities. Not allowing car access is not the same as keeping people out. I think it should be turned into a pedestrian and cycle route with limited delivery access and unlimited emergency service access. Car traffic should be restricted to the main arterial roads and savvy car commuters nipping through residential areas should be discouraged. The arterial roads are clogged and would be even more so but that should encourage people onto public transport or to walk. Regeneguru has some interesting ideas about applying 20mph speed limits on the main arterial roads and how given the current average speed of 12mph this could actually improve traffic flow. See the parallel discussion on SE5.. http://www.se5forum.org/forum/index.php/topic,589.msg3240.html#msg3240 -

Should definitely keep it closed. Much more pleasant along there recently. I think they should completely ban cars from Camberwell Grove and have purely cycle and pedestrian access. Maybe let the Ocado vans in between 9pm and 7am... -
