  1. Let's face it, it's probably also the alcohol factor. They may well be mortified if you wait to talk to them when they've sobered up, or perhaps mid-hangover if you're feeling sadistic.

  3. Perhaps I could hire myself out as a rage-o-gram. I'd say in a residential suburban area no time is the right time for loud music or parties (including barbecues), but on the other hand everyone deserves to behave selfishly / be young / celebrate life's milestones occasionally, so I usually use earplugs and try to distract myself unless it's really bad. Sounds like you've developed a healthy ability to sleep through it.
  4. Admiring the tenuous link to your favourite topic, Louisa, but I think it has more to do with fear as a lot of people are, probably quite sensibly, scared of being attacked if they make themselves identifiable. I'm part of the demographic you loathe and yet I'm also inclined to shout 'shut the f@ck up' (as several of my neighbours know) though I'd probably go out into the road to do it or maybe knock on their door so they can enjoy my expression and body language too.
  5. Certainly sounds like a euphemism now you mention it.
  6. Though, as she said, you'd need a bigger aisle for that.
  7. How annoying. It sounds personal rather than random. Can you think of anyone who, however unjustifiably, might feel they've been offended by anyone in your household recently?
  8. One of Victoria Wood's characters points out that it can take several days for the sperm to fertilise the egg, so you could think you conceived after a romantic dinner on a Thursday but the moment might actually be while waiting for the checkout at B&Q on Sunday morning.
  9. Is that in a van or in Morrison's? Or both? The mind boggles.
  10. It's the most beautiful clear reddish amber, like brandy (the way I have it, anyway) and delicious. I like it where I live. Shame I can't afford to buy anything in a five-mile radius but I try to enjoy what I've got.

And own at least one cookery book by Delia or Mary, plus possess minimum one hand-knitted item of clothing, bonus point if you made it yourself. Sudden urge to write the equivalent of the citizenship handbook for aspiring villagers, but I'll have a cup of tea (Fortnum's afternoon one) till it passes.
  12. If anyone wants the handbook I've got a spare.
  13. Think the OP's referring to Kate Ford, actress and woman of this parish, being reprimanded a couple of days ago for tweeting a picture of the schoolrun gridlock from her car, from the look of it up near the South Circ end of the village. There's been a lot of news coverage this week about the huge numbers of people who still phone, text or check emails while driving. Yesterday I ended up shouting at several myself, particularly the driver of a huge Boots lorry who was looking at his phone in traffic by Lambeth Bridge as I had to cycle across in front of him and it was clear he wasn't looking despite revving his engine.
  14. The Dulwich Estate tests for familiarity with the Mikado before allowing you to move into the village. You also have to be able to name all the members of the Archers family and have a current My Waitrose card.
  15. 'Airy persiflage' is from the Mikado: http://www.gilbertandsullivanarchive.org/mikado/webopera/mk208d.html I do love the Mikado.

May be an element of truth, though people I know who say things like that are more likely to see drinking as a social ritual. I was just wondering why you don't hear smokers say anything like that, or fat people ask if they're allowed a cake yet (lying in bed with a bag of Tyrrell's as we speak).
  17. Serious Q: why do people need permission or an excuse to have a drink? Can't think of anything else it applies to.

Run by Lambeth, and just seen from their website they're going to check for residency from 1 October, so you're still OK for now. http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/places/lambeth-reuse-and-recycling-centre-vale-street
  19. I found myself wondering if the naming of Gideon/Jack Titchener in the Archers is a veiled reference to Gideon/George Osborne. Expect in 30 years he'll manifest his evil genes by becoming a MP for Borchester and wreaking havoc on the local economy.
  20. If that fails there's the recycling centre in W Dulwich.
  21. And if the only traffic around happens to be a bike they clearly feel there's no need to wait, give way or indicate, because they're more important. The Herne Hill end of Stradella Rd is also a hotspot for this, as is the top bit of Greendale outside JAGS, where the new cycle lane is usually blocked by them.
  22. I'd have taken it back!
  23. The Brexit referendum was a bizarre mistake to make after nearly losing Scotland, hubris almost. I hope Ma'am refuses to give him the peerage he craves in the New Year's honours list.
  24. Boris is certainly shortsighted at times, among other limitations, but I was struggling to think of a time when Cameron sounded genuinely keen, inspired or enthusiastic about anything (other than point-scoring, often at quite a petty level) which I don't think is true of Boris. I suppose Cameron must have felt some kind of enthusiasm for creating peers as he made an unprecedented number of them, presumably to give the Tories an advantage in the House of Lords.
