Tony.London Suburbs replied to d803cn's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Never one to toe the party line per se sooo...:)) Which decision shall I make tonight Guys to get from Bexley to Chadwell Heath/Romford around 7.00 PM?,,,and back at 11,00PM! Option 1: Public Transport: 1/ Walk to nearest Bus Stop=10 mins 2/ Wait for solitary bus to Station=10 mins(Yeah! Right!) 3/ Bus Journey:7 minutes-walk to Station 3 minutes 4/ Wait for train to London Bridge(every half-hour) 5/ Train journey to LB-25 Minutes. 6/ Walk to Undergtound-Get Jubilee Line to Stratford... 7/ Walk to BR Stratford wait for Romford Train 8/ Train to Romford from Stratford. 9/ Walk Romford Station to local bus stop and wait for local bus to destination. 10/ 10 minute local bus journey.Short walk other end. Then repeat,in reverse at late hour! Journey Time,if every connection goes well=2 Hours(+).includes Walking/Buses/Tubes/BR Overground. OR:- 1/ Walk 5 feet to my car.Enter.Depart playing my music with the company I choose.Stopping if and when I decide,in the warmth of the car.(It IS going to be colder this evening!).if its wet then I'm dry etc... 2/ Arrive 5 feet from destination. Journey Time(including "rush hour" effect=40-50 mins. Return Journey Time=30 Minutes. Its a difficult one..any suggestions Guys:)) -

david_carnell Wrote: Whislt I wouldn't be so brazen as to openly question your cycle lane = increased congestion argument I wonder whether the number of car users of that particular stretch of road may have also increased at the same time. It immediately changed and its easy to see why. The road that leads into my small Town Centre from my direction had sufficient width to allow 2 lanes to go down to the Town and one uphill(where the Cycle Lane is on the side of the pavement with no impact on the traffic.)..The 2 "downhill" lanes then, effectively became 1, with the revised restrictive width and the right-hand traffic could no longer filter into the right-hand lane at the traffic lights at The Town junction until the last moment so you now have a single file line snaking back right up the hill beyond my turning with the existing problem of traffic entering and leaving the supermarket and the bus stop for the only bus route also b4 the junction at the traffic lights! I also wonder whether you are on the road at the right time to see the numbers of cyclists who do use it. Trust me when I tell you that endless surveys will have been conducted to test whether the cycle lane was warranted. They said it was a Government instruction to encourage cycling and out of their hands.::o -

I understand the point,of course David but like most things its all about balance and its so frustrating when two of the joys of being here are the (relatively) non-interference of our Local Council in its various political hues over the last 25 years and also the (relatively) flowing traffic. Two of those "6" were actually within seconds of each other in one journey as well. How do you measure that against probably costing 7/8 minutes extra per journey to maybe 600/700 Motorists a day over 4 months? Seems a poor return and trade-off. Naturally it would be better, though,if more people did cycle,I agree. -

chris Wrote: From The Evening Standard NEARLY 400 cyclists have been given on-the-spot fines for flouting the law Absolutely Spiffing!:)-D One of the joys of our local Bexley Council is their NON-interference in our everyday lives(thats Tory/Libs and Labour Administrations in my time to be fair)...until recently. So they built a nice little cycle lane 4 months ago.. Since then the (former) free-flowing traffic(usually) has ground to a halt, costing probably endless thousands of wasted hours for those unfortunate motorists caught up in this with the lanes rduced from 2 to 1..and for the benefit of?? 6 Cyclists that I have seen in 4 months...nice touch(6) -

Thing is,also, what if a policeman was an old style socialist like Michael Meacher and Viscount Anthony Wedgwood Benn and John Prescott and did not approove of the masses enjoying Home Ownership. They may act differently and show their resentment towards Home Owners(particularly Micky Meacher who had 4 Homes at the last count and rising)... -

Went to Peckham-Morleys,near Queens Road last week once I finally got there after letting the Police Cars go racing by. I avoided eye contact with the growing teenage mob on the nearby corner so that wasn't a problem and even when they all took off and rushed by me,as one, that wasn't an issue either. So I spoke to the Guy behind the Iron Grills in Morleys to give my order and he confirmed that no attempted robbery had taken place there for a couple of weeks. I refused to acknowledge the Girl, originally outside, who wanted some change until she saw me produce a ?5 note and then upped her request.I chose to wait the five minutes in my car rather than stay in the shop and collected my stuff and orf I jolly well went,so need to worry......say no more... p.s.Don't worry about these shootings/armed robberies we had one in my area 22 years ago so it can happen anywhere.

Husband's coffin kills wife on way to cemetery A Brazilian woman was killed by her husband's coffin on the way to the cemetery to bury him, police said. Marciana Silva Barcelos, 67, was in the front passenger seat of the hearse when the coffin slammed into her neck during a traffic accident. She died instantly. Her husband Josi Silveira Coimbra, 76, died of a heart attack while dancing at a party on Sunday. The events took place in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.....

Caught on CCTV 300 times a day on average...monitoring on a scale unimaginable a generation ago...we are all behind bars these days...only difference between Eric Blair's vision and our reality is that our Big Brothers and Sisters believe this surveillance is for our benefit... Georgie Org's mob had no such agenda. p.s.Talking of orwellian themes ...did anyone see Johnny Vegas on Room 101 last night? Am I the only Guy thinking him one of the 2 unfunniest Guys in The Business? -

SteveT Wrote: It seems to me that the PCSO's are taking the soft option... I would rather they spent their policing time more "effectively" dealing with whistling stalkers ... This is hard to effectively police. There was the recent story in Dulwich of a PCSO who realised this Guy was blatantly following and stalking this Young Lady for several days but at no point did he cross the line and actually whistle:X...so pointless in pulling him up,thus far.(6) -
The road is actually in Peckham. Its just off The Commercial Way next to Kelly Avenue. Need help with the name though..

Huguenot Wrote: Expats like me leave because the UK is populated by miserable gits,..... By far the overriding influence is the first. We pour scorn on success and whinge tirelessly about our failings. We have no national identity because we have no aspirational values. We don't know our strengths because we lack the imagination to put ourselves in someone else's shoes. We deride our public servants whilst sitting on our fat arses in front of the telly. I mean, for crissakes, we're scared of our own children. These are fundamentals, if we get these right then the schools, the hospitals will follow without legislation. Because we're too lazy to do that, we ask the government to provide laws. Pathetic. Well,at least,no-one can accuse you of that Huguenot!:)

Reg Varney, who died yesterday aged 92, was an actor, comedian and singer who became a household name as the central figure in the popular situation comedy On the Buses, which began in 1969 and ran for seven series. Varney managed to capture the quintessential spirit of a happy-go-lucky London bus driver in the character of Stan Butler, a cheeky barrel of laughs with an eye for the girls. And it is a testament to his skills as an actor that he managed to play so convincingly the role of an immature 35-year-old when he was in his mid-fifties. Always conscious of his lack of formal training as an actor, Varney was an earnest man when on set. He took his work seriously, constantly learning and rehearsing his lines ? as well as those of the other cast members, to give himself a complete understanding of the situation in which a comedy episode was set. Although to a large extent he played himself in On the Buses, Varney went to considerable lengths to research the role, even taking bus-driving lessons and a test to gain a heavy goods vehicle licence so that he could be filmed driving a bus on the open road. He would truly relax only at the end of a series, when he would throw a "Cockney party night" for the programme's cast and crew at his home in Enfield, north London. It was his little joke to get his co-stars eating whelks, cockles and jellied eels while he drank whisky or performed old East End songs at the piano........... Another old Cockney leaves us which is sad. The last paragraph reminds me of a Party 3 years ago when we said goodbye to my Auntie also aged 92 being the last of My Dads 7 Brothers and Sisters to survive at Peckham Rye Lane. Reg Varney R.I.P.
