Most famous person I've seen in ED so far....

Marie Lloyd gave me a wink over the fish fingers and frozen pollock in Iceland last week. -
>It's ridiculous that the main timetable/journey planner doesn't tell you that the trains aren't running. It does, Jeremy, surely, implicitly at least. I always use the Journey Planner to check a specific journey at the weekend. It shows replacement buses and/or longer or more devious journeys if any of the relevant train services isn't running.

It's bizarre though that they don't seem to do this on their other London sites. Meanwhile, more from the front line:

I see that the minutes of the open part of the Southwark Licensing Sub-Committee meeting of 27 April 2009, when the club's application for variation of licence was considered, are available in a 75 kB PDF document http://moderngov.southwarksites.com/mgConvert2PDF.aspx?ID=4036. AFAICS it's principally a statement of the additional permitted licensable activities (late night refreshments, etc) and the Environmental Protection Team Noise Conditions, as now incorporated in the full licence details http://app.southwark.gov.uk/licensing/LicPremisesGrantedDetails.asp?systemkey=828551 that DJKQ's already linked to and quoted from. Section 3 does contain: "We have considered all representations, written and aural, and we are satisfied that the conditions imposes by the Metropolitan Police and the Environmental Protection Team, which we have accepted, will alleviate any concerns with the licensing objectives. The Council expects that all terms, conditions and restriction of the premises licence will be complied with at all times that the premises are used under the licence. The failure to comply with terms, conditions and restrictions of the premises of the premises licence is a matter to which the Licensing Sub-Committee may have regard in the event that any request is made for the review of the licence."

Compare and contrast this other resignation story going the rounds at the moment for the benefits of a more controlled (display-board presentation via email) mode: http://thechive.com/2010/08/10/girl-quits-her-job-on-dry-erase-board-emails-entire-office-33-photos/ . I could just about eat spam but found it a really good appetite suppressant. Just the thing when I was poor. More recently a cheap sliced chicken roll -- the sort that turns into near tasteless rubbery pulp if you simmer it in boiling water for a few minutes -- reminded me of it.

I looked at the Hansard report http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201011/ldhansrd/text/100709-0002.htm of that Bill reading that I mentioned on 8 July. The Bill itself seems to me unlikely to get anywhere in the long run (eg: "This Bill needs such an enormous amount of improvement that maybe it should be retired into private life."), but there was, pre-election, a Defra public consultation on dangerous dogs legislation http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/dangerous/index.htm, and I got the impression that the present government is committed to looking at its outcome.

>I don't know if this is just a Hotmail thing or not No, and it's not even necessarily Mrs N's friend's address book that's been poached, just someone in your 'circle'. Once that's happened, any of the addresses in it can be used as a From address in a spoof email. Even someone with a totally secure system is likely to find, some time or other, that for several weeks they'll be receiving non-delivery notifications of spam, phishing, or other ill-intentioned email that has their address in the From field. It's not so difficult to learn how to read full email headers and to work out (at least to ISP or country level) where they've really beeen sent from.

Strange. I've had headaches from board markers being used in a room 30 feet down the corridor.

IMDB has "Twist at the end" as one of the less bizarre of its many plot keywords. If you search for just that alone, you get more than 2,000 titles. Anyone remember Incident At Owl Creek, a film club staple short of the sixties?

dbboy, yes, in part. And there has been talk about it on the forum on the Virginmedia site. In my case, there were problems with all my email addresses at the end of last week. They were apparently corrected by Virgin later in the day. But since not too long afterward, I've not been able to download from a mailbox on pop3.virginmedia.com. My pop.virgin.net mailboxes are accessible, as is smtp.virgin.net, which I use for posting. I have login and password set for both POP and SMTP access. In both cases I'm _not_ currently using SSL ports, for POP download or SMTP posting (though I did try them, experimentally, to see if they resolved the problem -- they didn't.) I know Virgin have now specified them, but I've delayed any switches till absolutely necessary and any switchover is stable. Interestingly, some of the posters on the forum have actually recommended using the standard, non-SSL ports. -

>If you are without tone on your phone line this seems like a connection problem on your own line >(rather than a systemic fault) - not of course pleasant for you and very frustrating That would be quite good news in my book. I previously had two protracted periods of BB ADSL deterioration. I could monitor and see clearly the intermittent decreases in Signal/Noise margin (especially after raining) and subsequent line drops, but couldn't definitely tie it to a line hardware fault (rather than, say, intermittent electrical noise interference from a nearby source). And the line quality passed BT voice tests, so no immediate cause for calling in a BT engineer (I don't buy BB from them). But each time, once the line fault got so bad as to make voice calls impossible, I was home and dry. Each time the fault was due to a corroding wire junction within 15m of the house. -

Has Penguin68's first question been answered? Alternatively/additionally, has a similar webstick, known otherwise to be working, been tried in the problematic location, on Karrie's own computer(s) or another one? -
>Ian.... >You are GOOD ( with a capitol G ) >How much do I owe you ? For my continuing silence? I'll take an open rain cheque.

This is getting very strange. The moment I put my own fez on, I received these perceptions of Woof. I hope you don't mind me putting them in public ... Your sexual adjustment has presented some problems for you. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them. You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a strong need for other people to like you and for them to admire you.
