I've just been unable to upload a .doc file as an attachment. The system reported that it was not of an accepted file type, and that only .jpg and .png files could be uploaded. I'm not sure whether this is a system change or a consequence of its glitchy state. In this particular case it doesn't really matter; I simply copied and pasted the contents.

I see someone on the forum has a couple of tickets going at face value. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?28,931170,935529#msg-935529 I caught the last twenty minutes of each of the semi-finals. Disappointed that France didn't have enough finishing skills. I still prefer them to both of the finalists, even if I do admit that they merited their places.
  3. Knowing next to nothing about plants, I tried starting from first principles, by trying to find a plant leaf key, but none of them led to a good hit. The nearest I've found, I can't remember how now, is possibly some variety of Astilbe. So can I have 50p each way on that please.
  4. What you really want is a cross, between a triffid and something attractive and expensive, that will start to get nasty if moved.
  5. I have somewhere a driver with an assortment of bits including torx. Can you make a firmer identification from, say the RH panel at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx?
  6. I asume you were using two computers on a single local network. If it was wireless, I assume it's secure? The first thing I'd check would be that you'd accessed a real official website, with a domain name ending london2012.com, rather than one masquerading as it. Did you each click a link (if so, obtained how?) or enter the URL by hand? A check of your browsers' histories or caches should get you identity of the URL(s) you accessed.
  7. I know little about football, but I enjoyed watching the French women's team a few days ago. Fast, intelligent, combinational play, from what I remember.

    Metal box

  9. As you can see, in response to your post in the Offered section, I took the liberty of posting something from the official faq about its being ok to transfer tickets to friends. In my book, friends includes sympathetic neighbours and fellow posters. Admin has prohibited any resale ads, though as far as I can see the criminal sanctions are against ticket touts, who are in it for profit, and are not intended or operable against friends and their private arrangements.
  10. Huh, I'd been half thinking of writing a script to get the same info from the official website. Suppose I've got no excuse for not going shopping now. Glad to see I match a cyclist. They might have included date and place of birth though.
  11. It's not hard to find from the inscription alone. http://www.scot.scotshome.com/photos/collection-01-P010.htm Oddly, I can't seem to find any geograph photo of it.
  12. BrandNewGuy wrote yesterday in a parallel thread http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,926229,929446 ------------------------------------------------------- > From Friday's South London Press: > "A man and a woman were seriously injured after a collision between a car and a motorbike in > Lordship Lane, East Dulwich, on Wednesday afternoon. > Traffic was brought to a standstill after the crash, which left the bike trapped against a tree. > The bike rider and passenger, both 23, were taken to King's Hospital in Denmark Hill. > Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening..." > > So, not for the first time, gruesome hearsay on this forum is shown to be wrong. It would be good > if we could just hear the facts, particularly as misinformation could easily lead to great distress > for the family and friends of those involved. And saying, "Well, someone told me..." is no excuse. > Social media has a lot to answer for...
  13. It may leave a disfiguring scar. Consider amputation.

  15. I can start a 4-hour DVD recording of BBC1 at 21:00 if no-one additional to espelli is doing it. I've had one DVD exceptionally failing to finalise this week; the only one for many months, but a reminder that no single machine can be 100% relied upon.
  16. In British legal citations, v is currently used for versus; see for example http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/services/sas/library-services/subject-help/subjects/law/law-citations.cfm. If citing cases from other legislations, I'd stick to their own usage. For terms such as "legal capacity" and "legal responsibility" I don't think there's any alternative to using reference sources, such as may be found eg on the web, to make sure you understand their meaning in English law and that your translation is appropriate. Usenet group uk.legal.moderated (also accessible via google groups) is a good forum for questions on matters of law.

    A message

Is there anywhere we can hear a recording of any of these messages without resorting to public transport? I feel a sort of duty to share in the suffering.
  18. You'll not have had your pee then, Dougal?
  19. I'd have phoned 999, given them the facts, and left the prioritising decision to them. The case seems to me to fall within the third of these descriptions of when 999 is appropriate: ( http://www.met.police.uk/ccc/emergency_nonemergency_calls.htm ) - There is a danger to life or a risk of injury being caused imminently. Examples include serious road accidents, assaults or serious disorders. - A crime is in progress. Examples include assault, burglary, and theft or if an offender is still on scene, or has just left the scene. - Police attendance is required immediately such as to prevent a breach of peace, someone acting suspiciously or someone who is about to commit an offence. On your evidence a PC would imo have sufficient grounds to question such a person, and to search and arrest them if having due suspicion of an offence. If the person has any stolen property or burgling tools on them there might even be a result. At worst, the person is going to be made more aware that attempted opportunity theft has its risks, and the police will have the identity of a possible miscreant.
  20. The online Southwark News has just: "EXCLUSIVE RED-FACED council wardens have said ?sorry? after forcing a caf? to bin some bagels hanging in its window ? just because they were in the shape of the Olympic rings. "The bungling Town Hall staff claimed the ?unauthorised? use of the symbol breached copyright rules." [That's all you get in the free version. Does anyone have access to the paid-for one?]
  21. If it saved the ditching of a twelve week murder trial that was very close to conclusion, it may have had some merit. http://www.guardian.co.uk/law/2012/jul/19/riot-murder-judge-bbc-broadcast-documentaries Waiting a few more weeks to see the documentaries isn't going be a great burden or cost much, and the replacement documentary on wartime aerial reconnaissance was well worth seeing. A more probing reasoned assessment can now take place, and hopefully it will help inform any similar future decision.
  22. > The firm in this instance is: PSG Surveys LTD ... which does not in fact exist! It does. It was incorporated in January 2012. You can check any UK registerd company here: http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/info
  23. Thanks for the reminder. I've just put my card provider's 24hr number on my phone. Do banks display their own number near their ATMs?
  24. I wonder how much more difficult using security screws would make it. Far from insuperable, but it would mean a perp would have to have a choice of bits available, or switch to the brute force option. Is it normal for the hinge screws to be exposed, btw?
  25. The novel opens with Lizzie Cree being hanged at Camberwell in 1881. Brixton ceased to house women in 1869 http://www.pbs.plymouth.ac.uk/solon/journal/issue%204.1/Davie%20crimes%20and%20Misdemeanours%20final.pdf (200kByte). Horsemonger Lane Gaol, in Newington, closed in 1878 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsemonger_Lane_Gaol, when Wandsworth took over as the main hanging prison for South London http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=074-acc3444&cid=0#0. Ackroyd possibly didn't want to introduce any fictional detail for which there ought to be a real historical record.
