I agree with you "once in a while, when needed" is totally acceptable Any other grandiose ideas, about a space to park your car outside your house, are just plain silly And 'Louisa bashing' is a bit rich, given your form HNY to you

Oh what fun TBH, I hadn't a clue what the NY day parade was all about, but I volunteered my vehicle to be converted into a taxi cab and our time to drive it in the parade It was great fun, and i'm up to do it again next year Our 'float' came 2nd and we won ?6K for the cause If you've not been, it's a different way to spend NYD Happy New Year

I did competitive Judo into my early 20's. I satrted at 6/7 whilst at boarding school, it was that or boxing. And I didn't like the idea of a punch straight in the face, as a sport The full contact part is a buzz indeed, and getting stuck in is a good way of growing your courage I did make a foray back into it, sometime ago. But having injured both shoulders climbing, it wasn't going to happen without messing me up (probably for good). Which was such a shame, as there's a Judo club in Rotherhite with an older geezers sparring class That said, i'm a little wary of 'chokes and choke holds', they work, but can be dangerous. Though i've always been facinated by the effectiveness of locks and lock holds It's a niche subject I know, but self defence & martial arts when parcticed well and over a long period, does/can change your life. Personally, it comes (the calm) from within and disapates the fear of confrontation and fights. It pretty much saved me from a very nasty incident, where I was lucky to come away with 28 stitches to my face and head (and no, I don't look like Boris Karloff, thanks to a Maxilio Facial surgeon) Good luck to you Lady D, it's a strangely personal journey. I still go and watch the events a Crystal palace, when I can. The different styles from around the world are often great (and sometimes tedious) to watch

Sorry tallulah71, but the 'dropped-curb-driveway-parking-space' is a whole different thread And parts of that I can sympathise with you on Louisa's silly matter, is a whole load of other guff Happy New Year

Seriously EP, bacon, ham and the likes are all very doable Belly bacon, max 10 days start to finish Buy the River Cottage Handbook 13 Curing & Smoking book It cost ?14.99 and by far the easiest to follow on the subject http://www.rivercottage.net/about/latest-news/curing-and-smoking-handbook/

I wholly recomend the Goose option And the Cockerel was a revalation, in both taste and texture I brined both the goose and the cockerel (seperately), for 24hrs prior to cooking, then drip-dried them on the high part of my washing line, for a few hours. The goose was cooked in a Jerk Kettle type drum barbecue, not directly over the heat, but set to oneside, with a roasting tray under the grill mesh. There's a whole load of fat that renders of a goose, but the flavour was outstanding. The brine partly cures the meat, so the texture is firm and moist, no dryness or toughness. And it was all very easy, you just need to invest in a plasterers white plastic mixing bucket, it holds 2 geese comfortably. The brine is essentially a 10% salty tea, using salt and some sugar, aromatics and fresh herbs after its cooled. Once submerged in the brine, the birds get 24 hrs in a cool outhouse space The cockerel went in a regular oven, and 3 1/2 hrs or so later it's done. It's a firm and flavoursome bird. Less sweet than a Turkey I'd say. More like a richer old school chicken, if you've ever tasted one. Weighed in at 5 kilos, so quite a bird All in all, very good fun, easy and tasty, plus plenty of cold cuts next day Hope you all had a good one Onward to the New Year, but as i've somehow ended up driving a float in the New Year day parade, i'll be an early night at #SeabagTowers

On a food note, I do like to pot roast a Turkey crown. It's so easy and tasty, i'd give it a go Mr Ben And of course, a ham Looking forward to getting through this week, kids are excited Oh and we've got the builders in at the mo, not out of here until mid Jan
