Dismantle Big Ben and reconstruct it in Southwark. At the centre of one of the Elephant & Castle roundabouts, for example.

Oh I on't think so DM. Not in the way that Mr Quick is. And what a marvellous Anglo-Saxon name that is, whatever his professional shortcomings....

I have to say I'm not impressed with the IPCC performance up to yesterday evening. They are supposed to be independent, right? -

He also removed his police number from the outside of his uniform, from what I'm seeing on some reports and photos. I seem to recall police didn't use to wear balaclavas? Or perhaps balaclavas under riot headgear? Or am I just being terribly old fashioned? I mean, on a demo, what exactly is the purpose of a balaclava? Under riot (helmet) headgear? I hear there are plenty of duff ones around at the mo'.

According to the judge in a recent prosecution, sunlight is not a defence. You must drive appropriately for the conditions, and those conditions include sunlight.

There have been a disproportionate number of women killed by lorries in London. There is a theory that women ride less assertively - and perhaps therefore less safely - than men. In particular, men tend stick more to the centre of the road/lane, considered by many to be a safer riding position in busy traffic. ---------------- The Times has obtained a copy of the study, which says that 86 per cent of the women cyclists killed in London between 1999 and 2004 collided with a lorry. By contrast, lorries were involved in 47 per cent of deaths of male cyclists. The findings help to explain why the growing popularity of cycling by city commuters is resulting in frequent deaths of young women in similar circumstances. The death rate among women cyclists has increased since the report was completed, with two killed in collisions with lorries within 24 hours last month. ----------------

Tomlinson left work at around 7, according to his work colleague, from south of King William Street. By 7.15 he'd been hit at least once by a riot officer and was on the ground, in Royal Exchange Passage. Having already passed two police cordons and been turned away at one. JSW, he doesn't seem to have had time to have a drink. If he was wobbly on his feet, that could be for all sorts of reasons (feeling/being unwell etc. etc.) Very sensible to be conducting a second post mortem. -
PeckhamRose, you are right of course. Nothing wrong with good old barter. Unless you're a taxman B)

JSW: There is thousands of hours of CCTV coverage from across all points in the City. There is hundreds of hours of footage from the polices own dedicated 'video teams' the so-called Metropolitan Police Forward Intelligence Team. And yet, and yet... nothing from the police to indicate the guy had done anything at all, and not a peep out of the police to suggest that he might have committed any offence of any description. There is certainly more here that meets the eye: like the police behaviour and their subsequent claims. -

In the UK: the Totnes pound, the Lewes pound. See the extensive literature online on the Transition Towns movement. This news story was published around a year after launch in Totnes. No discount is required. People use them anyway.

charliecharlie I am thinking your post was perhaps provoked by my post 45 minutes earlier about the lack of poetry, the lack of oratory, in the average bus-religious-nut-punter. (Why are they so banal?) I had planned to post this link to Lynne Dawson singing I Know My Redeemer Liveth, but got swept away by work events. . Though the one that always gets me is the one about the valley of the shadow of death (23rd psalm). Many years ago, a good friend at the time invited me to take part in the choir at evensong at Kings College Cambridge... Moos, naysayers is a lovely word. dulwichdoll, I thing fruitfullness can only ever be mellow, owing to Keats. Colocation, colocation, colocation!

I don't know. We in the UK have a tradition of people dying at police hands at demonstrations etc.. (Old enough to remember Blair Peach? Or Kevin Gately? There have been others...) What I can't stomach is the shit the police come out with afterwards. Can you see any officers helping the guy there? It's as if they have permission to treat people as non-human-beings. These guys do not need more powers. Whatever they say. Bizarrely, when the BBC was offered this footage by the Guardian yesterday, they turned it down saying it was London-centric, according to the Guardian's Stephen Moss. -

If they could really quote the Messiah, or Blake, or the German Romantics, I could forgive them. But they all have some crazy born-again tediously expressed texts in rotten English. One can forgive so much for poetry, for art...

Huge-nut, you perhaps detected the placement of my tongue, in the environs of my cheek, perchance?
