Just got a letter from the Head Teacher at Goodrich today (our son is due to start Reception in Jan 2010)informing us that there are going to be extra Reception places in three Southwark schools from this Sept (2009). There will be 30 extra places at Goodrich and Crampton and 15 extra places at Lyndhurst. The whole expansion will be fully funded and staffed. The places at Goodrich and Crampton are temporary for one year only. The places at Lyndhurst are permanent. Apparently Southwark have received numerous late applications this year which has led to this dramatic turn of events. edmama, do a search for Bessemer Grange on this site and you will find lots of information about the place.

Are we meeting up on Wednesday? I am determined to get there this week. :)

Missed the start of the season as I was on holiday, but really looking forward to those big rivalries; Utd vs Pool, Spurs Arsenal, Atila vs Sandperson

I just read through the last couple of pages of this thread and what a good read.....I've been away for ten days on holiday and haven't listened to a radio or watched any television and thus missed the end of the Ashes and the start of the Premiership. Now I know we beat Australia, thanks guys. Now for the football thread...

I managed to get here too, but later, after lunch, so I don't know whether there were any other Forumites around. My two played in the garden then attended one of the classes, which they both loved, being two boys (4 and 2) amongst a load of girls. Thought the Bubble trainer was just perfect. Then did a bit of drawing, colouring whilst having a drink. Didn't get to chat much but as Pickle says was chaotic and the time we got there it felt a little like things were winding down. Still nice to have a change and a trip on top deck of the 185 is an adventure in itself for the little ones.

Pickle, candj, I'm afraid that I never got there after all - the thing that prevented me getting there at the time I said I would also prevented me getting there at all. I ended up at the Horniman Triangle instead. Just put it down to incompetence.

Wolfie, I think the term you were looking for was "playing alone". Saying it the other way might make people think they've tuned into a Channel 5 confessional show.

Shifu is pretty neat with a pair of chopsticks, as is Po; though the latter is probably the only master sporting two black eyes

Think some people are getting a bit out of focus in terms of the feel-good definition. A film that makes you feel good at the end, when the goodie obliterates the baddie in a hail of comeuppance bullets or the hero finally gets his gorgeous girl is not necessarily a feel-good film. A feel-good film is a light fluffy bit of entertainment that makes you feel like smiling pretty much throughout its entirety. Comprend?

And Rachel Weisz has a similar effect in the film that started this whole thing off, "Definitely, Maybe" wherein a not-all-that-charismatic male lead, (Ryan Reynolds?) is rescued by Weisz and two other strong female characters.

Nice to know that the Aussies have had six century makers so far in this series. At least we got one today!

I was in Brixton, running the gauntlet in Argos. Memorable experience.

Hey guys, I think we're getting a little outside the remit with some of these selections. Although I like "Shawshank" its probably only a feel-good when you watch it a second or third time when you know he gets out. "Schindler's" na, only watched it once but way too serious. Out and out screwball comedies surely can't make the list. There are too many victims. Laughing at the misfortune of others might be funny but it doesn't make you smile warmly. I didn't want to include kiddies films in the list but "Ratatouille" and "Kung Fu Panda" make me smile throughout.

The OP asks whether or not there is a God without really defining terms. That seems crucial. There has been much spoken about whether it is the God of the bible or simply some supernatural being who started all this business of the natural world and human life and then slipped away and left us to it. Some have argued that there is no evidence that this omnipotent God doesn't exist and that the specualtions of scientists who wonder about the beginnings of the world are as fanciful as any belief in that supernatural being. So be it but from what I can see that sort of understanding of God is not really what religious people mean. Surely, how life started (finger snap by God or spontaneous material event) is one debate, but more important is how life continues. The question is whether or not God is active in life. Perchance, I wonder if we can sort this all out by Friday so that we can have a celebratory drink?
