Ooh I'd not considered USA....admittedly the politics put me off! But I'm also sunshine chasing so wondering what weather I can expect in Tucson or Miami? Yes, Lanzarote is great for weather, have been a number of times but I guess I'm looking for potential sea swimming and 18C too cold for me to do that! Thanks for the travel website tips malumbo, will take a look

I really fancy b*ggering off over the festive period to soak up some sun. I'm considering Thailand as it's accessible, easy and cheap (once you get there) but am looking for other suggestions and recommendations. Where have people been for a sunny break over Christmas and/ or New Year? Was it worth it or better to wait a few weeks and go later in January when it is cheaper? Any tips on where to look for good flight deals?

FM Mangal certainly the best I have tried in SE London (obviously there are other areas of London better known for Turkish restaurants- Green Lanes)- has widespread great reviews too. The "pita" bread and fried onion dish mentioned is, I assume, the complementary Turkish spiced pide bread which has been toasted on the mangal and served with the charred onion dipping sauce.....I could happily fill myself on this it is so tasty. I love the little cup of hot tea they give while you wait for take-away too. Not loving the sound of K&W or Hisar on Lordship from the descriptions on here......they sound a bit more British Kebab than FM Mangal where I get great meat and fish dishes and fresh salads

Be careful! Phone snatching attempt - East Dulwich Road
binkylilyput replied to sarah g's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree and I've said this on the many previous posts about this. While I'm not saying we should be wreckless, the idea that this crime will be prevented by the victim not using their phone is just silly. The emphasis is should be on stopping the criminal not putting responsibility on the victim. It's a mobile phone........MOBILE DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Jules-and-Boo Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > failing that, just don't have your phone out > and > > keep things in your pockets. > > Yep.. > 1st Option. > > People should not get their phones out in a > public place. > > Women should not walk down the road alone. > > Elderly people should stay in doors and not > venture out after dark. > > Children should not be allowed to play > outdoors. > > Then it would be a lovely world with less > crime. > > 2nd Option. > > Catch these Ar*****s and bang them up. > > Then our streets really WOULD be a safer > place. > > Stop all this Pussy Footing around. > > DulwichFox -
Laptop squatters - Lordship Lane
binkylilyput replied to Chief's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Nope, not bothered at all. Sitting with a drink while reading a book, the newspaper, chatting to a friend, watching the world go by ......or on a laptop/ ipad........that's what coffee shops are for no? Are some people more entitled to be in a coffee shop than others? I don't get it! -
I like the fact that some of the thread has flipped to be highlighting positives rather than negatives......otherwise it would be a right miserable post at a time when this great city could probably use some encouragement and showcasing for tourists!

Behaviour - Melbourne Grove Medical Centre
binkylilyput replied to dulwichrich's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I work with many doctors and nurses but not in A&E. If there is a medical emergency anywhere in my building they will respond. I have also been with them in public when there has been a medical emergency and seen them leap right in there to assist where they can- which may be relatively basic first aid but could save a person's life. A GP surgery would have a portable defribrillator (it's a requirement) and ALL NHS GPS receive regular training on how to use one. In fact, if you work for the NHS in a clinical setting most staff are trained annually in CPR, even non clinical staff. https://www.resus.org.uk/quality-standards/primary-care-quality-standards-for-cpr/ CPR or defib may not have been required in this case obviously. The staff at the GP surgery would not have a duty of care for this person but I would see it as a personal responsibility perhaps. The fact that it was a pub does impact upon people's decision making -
Could we hear a bit about what to expect at a WI group? What happens?!

I've been hoping someone will look in my bin too. they are overflowing each week due to not enough bins for the number of users (yes I have contacted the council numerous times). If someone would like to look in my bin and, perhaps, take some rubbish out, I would be most grateful. Feel free to do whatever you want with my rubbish- I have made the decision to cast it out

I'll be your girlfriend Teloppse (I'm loving this guy. He's been spamming all day- Admin keeps removing his posts)

Yep, I guess there hasn't been a moped attack reported specifically in East Dulwich (to my knowledge) but given the number of other moped crimes that have been reported in East Dulwich, and the fact that Brockley Rise, Sydenham etc are pretty local I thought the conversation warranted the main section......but not to worry. The main thing is that these attacks seem to be more than one off, isolated incidents and certainly relevant to ED. I've not heard or read any plans by the police or particular advice....other than put your phone away. The attack at Brockley Rise reportedly involved a lady and her daughter in her 20s- the lady pinned to the ground and daughter attacked with a penknife as they crossed the road- 18th July The one in Penge (link above) has been shared widely on social media- poor guy

I know that the problem with pedestrians having phones etc stolen by thieves on mopeds locally has been discussed but I couldn't find the thread.... Anyone else feeling concerned about how this is escalating into more violent attacks? I have read about 3 assaults in the near vicinity over recent days- Ladywell, Brockley Rise (Honor Oak) and this terrible attack caught on camera in Sydenham. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/moment-brave-passersby-foil-violent-moped-mugging-in-london-a3590136.html I'm sure everyone is aware of these attacks (including the huge press covering of acid attacks)but just a reminder to be vigilant (is that even possible when simply going about one's daily business?) and report anything that could be dodgy. Obviously this is not just locally but across London. Is there anything else that can be done?

Now THIS is a great topic.......but I suspect it will be lounged.....unless you care to make it specific to East Dulwich. That would REALLY make it interesting! ETA: 33? Pah, still youthful :-)

"Hysterical frenzied mob"!!!! Brilliant I'm totally anticipating hysterics and frenzy when this flan shop opens. East Dulwich is well known for it. I'm thinking the opening of a flan shop is likely to push things a bit too far and the mob could well lose control. I'm wondering if the new owners have considered maybe having a heightened police presence around that time? Might be just as well to go the extra distance to Ayre's bakery until things calm down- best not to risk sh*t kicking off on Lordship, these flan eaters are like the walking dead when they smell quality butter

Prices discussed (argued about) previously in this post not really accurate then. Thanks tarteastdulwich- this all sounds lovely and I hope your new venture will be a roaring success! Welcome and best of luck

Inattentive Nanny - East Dulwich Area?
binkylilyput replied to BScarr's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thank you to the OP for caring enough to keep an eye on the child, speak to the nanny directly, thinking it over, taking the time to post about it (in order to hopefully alert parents who may be otherwise unaware)and also responding to helpful suggestions such as removing specific detail. This is an example of being part of a community within the modern world. We see so many posts harping on about the old days (whether it be to slag off new shops or criticise mothers with their buggies)and here is a post that demonstrates how to be mindful and look after our community's children. If more people were nosy about a child's wellbeing....... -

Ah now that is true malumbu, Blythe hill is a lovely walk, forgot that bit. But as I say HOP is green, leafy and has some attractive bits. Can't say I agree about Le Querce. I've been there twice, both not great. The last time we didn't like the food so much we made an excuse and left without eating it (giggling down the road at the crapness of it- warm prosecco included!)- paid of course. I forgot there are some nice little places around Brockley Rise- including Honor Oak Wellness Rooms. Also My Jammii cafe which helps young people at a disadvantage develop work skills. So yep, I like HOP but don't expect to find loads. Another plus as it is walking distance to lots of other areas such as Peckham, Brockley, Lordship etc.

Nah, there's not a lot at all I'm afraid! The best options are Mamma Dough pizza restaurant which is nice. Also Babur is a well known, upmarket Indian restaurant. There's Donde which is a pretty lame tapas bar. The Chandos pub was renovated a few months ago (was a bog standard, old fashioned boozer) into some generic pub that also does pizza. The Honor Oak pub is also generic and food is lame. Recently the caf? called Hopscotch has re-opened as Two Spoons and is quite nice. As for shops.....even less! there's a little gift shop and a bicycle shop.....and a chip shop. Oh and a small deli. Anyway, the good news is that the transport connections are fabulous with loads of trains (when they run) and various buses. Also lots of nice green trees (go a walk up One Tree Hill).

I suspect many feel similarly. It's very tough to be open about changing your mind and some people stick rigidly to their original view for this reason

Cycles to be removed - Goodrich/Dunstans
binkylilyput replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm genuinely interested to know what the problem is with chaining a bike to a railing. Assuming they aren't getting in anybody's way, why does the council get bothered about it? Are there reasons I haven't thought of?
