  1. Must have missed this, what with mine just going back to school, college, uni, but why are you striking?
  2. There's been some re-runs of The Sweeney on TV recently. Remember watching The Sweeney with my Dad and sisters many years ago! After spotting an actor at Brixton tube during the past 6 months or so I've just realised it's an actor from The Sweeney but can't put a name to the face. Dark hair, looks a bit like Patrick McGowan but I can't put a name to him. Sorry just remembered this is for Sainsburys sightings!
  3. Taken yesterday showing the new Early Years building. Last photo shows the original entrance to the old building taken today.
  4. The roof of the old Bessemer building was flat and was covered in asphalt and bitumen for as long as I can remember (I was taught in this building and my own three children) so that probably explains the reason for the thick black smoke. Husband saw the flames yesterday which were so intense. I was there after Police had taped it off. Some photos taken after the fire and yesterday.
  5. Think it's the old Bessemer reception building, which is across the road from the main building - very sad.
  6. My own children were a bit older than 3 when I used the Peter and Jane series by Ladybird to help them recognise letters and read. The books are a bit vintage now I suppose but my children really enjoyed them. I was often asked by their teachers at primary school what I had done to help with their reading/writing.
  7. Nappy Lady - I know a little girl called Eden.
  8. Here go the BBC scaremongering again about a disease "spread by cats". Thought everybody knew that toxoplasma (spelling)! is dangerous to pregnant women. This isn't just connected to cats but undercooked meat (I'm sure). Found out recently that if you have a suppressed immune system (such as when on chemotherapy) then being careful when emptying cat litter trays etc. is something you have to be aware of.
  9. I love Loveday too - when tracing my family tree back to Devon and Cornwall a few hundred years ago, Loveday was a popular name then.
  10. Thinking about it there's not many Peters around. My Dad's name is Peter (he's 84) and most people call him Pete, so you have got to think of possible shortenings of names I suppose. By the way if you like Jarvis, I would go for it. There won't be another when he starts reception class and I think it's a great name but each to their own. When my son was born he was going to be a Daniel (he's now 19). As soon as he was born he didn't look like a Daniel and he isn't now!
  11. Don't know about toilets, but my husband remembers these buildings as the entrance to the old Peckham Rye outdoor lido (must have been in the 70s) and I was going to the Brockwell Park lido at the same time!
  12. There was a a two page spread in Thursday's Southwark News about A Level results. It included students from Harris Academy, Walworth Academy, St Saviour's and St Olave's and Bacon's College. Two students from Bacon's had got a place at Cambridge University and one was off to Oxford. There was also a pic of students from The Charter celebrating their A Level results. One of them was going on to study Aeronautical Engineering (he had 3 As and 1 A star) and two students from The Charter were going on to study at Oxbridge. Over 90% of Charter students got their first choice of uni. The Charter have also had great GCSE results too.
  13. I also know nothing about pruning trees but rch's photos are quite shocking really. Looks like the tree cutters have just gone around the nest not even thinking to leave some foliage to protect the babies. This happened when I was leaving to take my daughter to school one morning a couple of years ago. Men from Southwark Council were cutting back a big bush (which I knew had nests in) on the other side of the fence to my back garden (in a park). I had been feeding the parents and asked the men to be careful etc. When I came back from school (30 minutes later) the bush had been more or less obliterated and one baby bird was hopping about in my garden. I could hear the parent calling madly and I managed to go into a neighbours garden and place the baby in a spot for mum to find. I know there were other babies in that bush but don't know what happened to them. I had a go at one of the men and think he felt a bit sorry afterwards!
  14. Reams
  15. Species
  16. Would second the sitting-on-lap method. Mother-in-law taught me this as the norm (and for nappy changing) and I did it with my own three teenagers when I didn't have the normal equipment to hand.
  17. If you have a nursery in mind they could probably tell you over the phone.
  18. Undisputedtruth - thanks for that video but where are the people? It seems it's all about the modern building?
  19. Thanks Dawn, I've seen the same around and they seem pretty docile.
  20. Can anyone identify jamesb and itowill's photos?
  21. Hi Mrs TP - two years ago, when my youngest daughter was starting secondary school, I would not have even thought of getting her a mobile phone. Fast forward two years and it's a different world. Yes vanessa and vesti - The Charter School don't allow mobiles so I go along with that policy. Daughter (nearly 14) and her older sister (16) have their mobiles (cheap ones) and my 19 year old son who still has a 5 year old mobile but he doesn't care, but I DON'T let them take mobiles to school as I know they're not allowed (The Charter School). Occasionally I've let them take their mobiles on a half inset day if they suddenly decide to go to to a friends or whatever. But if they did go to a friends(or whatever) on a normal day after school they know they to have to ask to use the parents landline/mobile to phone me (a normal thing anyway, otherwise I would be phoning round their friends to their embarrasment).
  22. Maybe the staff at Dulwich are becoming part-time as for the past few months they do seem few and far between. dukesdenver - going onto the southwark site you put up I was shocked to find the mobile library service ended last 1st April. Shame for the elderly and disabled people in the borough. Also, there were two library managers for the whole of Southwark libraries, now there's only one. Then they are trying to find ways of reducing staff less like getting volunteers to come in. If Dulwich closed where would we in this part of the borough go? All the way to Bermondsey? If they are putting all their money in Harvard and Canada Water then it seems inevitable.
  23. Hi Sammy - it does sound from your post like you are bored and unimpressed with the groups you take your 1 and 3 year old to so maybe your children are picking up on this? As a childminder, I've found repetition of songs and nursery rhymes is a good thing for babies/toddlers and up to school age children and it's a key part of their speech, language and listening skills.
  24. Well Dulwich is a library so why should they have Ebooks, whatever they are! Also, I've never known it to be dismal and damp-smelling. The stock at Dulwich library is great for all ages. Was there a week ago and they have loads of new books for every age and interest and study.
  25. Kate Bush fantastic!
