MM. You and I agree on little (or at least the methods to obtain it) but on this I am 100% behind you. In my opinion CCTV is an abhorrent waste of public money, an intrusion into my private life and collosally inefficient at doing good. What it does achieve, in those too cosseted to notice, is a reduction in "fear of crime". When all it really does is displace crime to other locations. And that's presuming these cameras are decent enough to even record anything watchable enough to be of use as evidence in a court of law. On high streets I unhappily tolerate their presence, but in residential environs I am certainly on your side, and would feel equally horrified if they were on my road. Please let me know how you get on. Oh, and if you fancy a spot of guerilla action in the name of liberty well, all I can say is a know a good balaclava and wire cutter stockist.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. A riveting account of 1950s missionary life in the Belgian Congo as told by the wife and four daughters of a baptist preacher. A wife and FOUR daughters - no wonder the man turned to the Lord. It's actually a fascinating insight into prejudice and colonial life told in epic technicolour. Am nearly half-way through its 600 pages and loving it.

See, Tony. We'll be leaving our front doors unlocked next. Or allowin our children out to play unsupervised *gasp* Well done to those that stopped. Good show. -
Not really a blog, and terribly politically incorrect, but this had me in stitches this morning: The Top 25 Men Who Look Like Old Lesbians I've been told some of you are unable to enjoy such wit and humour due to workplace internet nazis so I've taken the liberty of pasting a couple of entries below. #22 Robert Redford http://cdn-www.cracked.com/articleimages/wong/redford.jpg He Is: Actor. Director. Looks Like: The head of Women's Studies at Community College of Denver. #17 Masai Oka http://cdn-www.cracked.com/articleimages/wong/masi2.jpg He is: Actor. Time Magazine whiz kid. Reported I.Q. of 180 (same as cast of Carpoolers). Looks Like: An author of a paper stating sex with a man is, by definition, a hate crime. #3 Ricky Gervais http://cdn-www.cracked.com/articleimages/wong/gervais.jpg He Is: Comic. Writer. Actor. Creator of the hugely popular The Office and the somewhat less popular Extras. Looks Like: Someone who moved to Aleutian Islands with social worker partner and is studying to be a priest in the Anglican Church.

As someone on the other thread mentioned, it could well be more of a licensing ruse than some sort of elitist venue (not that I'd mind that you understand,as long as I was invited). A place I used to frequent regularly as a student in Leeds (RIP Hyde Park Social) was a "members club" but in reality this amounted to an annual sub of ?1 and a bit of yellow paper witha your name and number on it. Apparantly it allows for cheaper licenses and therefore cheaper drinks. Worked a treat for me.

Holland?

Don't tease him - he's "not in the mood" apparantly.

Booze my friend, booze. Then time. Or, if you're feeling in the mood, I do believe there is a girl in the Lounge area about to become single this evening. She might be worth a punt!

So do I after this afternoon..... It's becoming more and more difficult to report on these matches without giggling to myself.

SimonM Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > And Leeds did not drop 2 points at home > today...they salvaged one by all accountsB) Don't know what "accounts" you're reading sunshine - but the ones I read said it's a mystery how we didn't win. Dominated from start to finish. Bristol have two chances and score twice whereas we do everything but. I like to think of Leeds as the Arsenal of League One! All skills and subtle chances but lacking the killer instinct. Maybe you can let me know when they come to the Lane...
-
Hehehe...I should be annoyed by two dropped points at home but instead the thought of the Blades being shat on from a great height by the Aresenal reserves keeps making me feel better. And Hartlepool at home keeps the mood good. Could have been a lot worse. See above for example.

Only gay in the village?

Oh yes, I remember now. A home draw against MU would be "interesting" to say the least. They'd probably field a reserve team and still win but with 40000 baying Leeds fans you never know how these la-di-da Premiership boys will cope. I'll take MU in the next round after we've beaten you lot at the Lane! And I suspect you're right about Sky not being fussed over two Yorkshire rivals from large cities with big fan bases. Typical.

This is where, for me at least, this argument falls down. 'People' are given far too much credit. 'People', in general, are actually quite dim and wouldn't know a good investment if it bit them on the arse. For a long time, probably a decade or more, the average person has had a bit more cash to play with. Have people saved wisely, or invested? No, they bought plasma tvs and expesnive foreign holidays. Why do you assume that if everyone suddenly got a bit more cash in their pocket with lower taxes of whatever sort they would suddenly turn into Warren Buffet?

To answer some of the questions that have been posted on this thread: Why not land at some other airports dotted around London rather than fly across London to Heathrow? Well, presuming that these flights have come from Europe or the East in general, airports such as Southend or Biggin Hill cannot accomodate large planes (such as 747s) due to their small runways and other various bits of aviation regulation. Nor do they have the infrastructure to cope with the large number of flights that Heathrow deals with. Why not fly over non-populated areas rather than across central London? In practise this isn' really feasable. Almost all of the South East is densely populated so trying to navigate a circuitous route to avoid populated areas would be complex at best and impossible at worst. By choosing to live in a city with easy access to half a dozen airports (and thus a quick getaway for your summer hols) you have the disadvantage that that close proximity brings - noise. Why not stop airport expansion before things get worse? For many reasons. The economic benefits that mass air travel and transit bring is enormous. Tourists spending money trickles through the whole economy and the air shipping of goods makes British exports/imports profitable. Unless people are fundamentally prepared to ditch many aspects of their modern lives (foreign foodstuffs for eg) and sacrifice the jobs aviation provides, airport expansion must continue, albeit not infinitely. The environmental and social costs do, of course, need to be addressed but no government in its right mind would halt the growth of air travel and transit - especially in the current economic climate of uncertainty. Why not build an airport in the Thames Estuary, away from people? It's certainly an option but has many issues to be addressed. Although it would be an immense undertaking and cost a lot these aren't the real difficulties. Heathrow is not merely "an airport". The knock-on industries surrounding it and the jobs that accompany those are huge. It's easy enough to build a high speed rail link to ferry tourists back and forth from the Thames Estuary to central London but you can't move tens of thousands of workers that way. Where would the warehouses for freight go? When you drive to Heathrow all around it are hundreds of offices and storage units all relating to the airport. These can't all be put in the middle of the sea as well. The cost of building the whole thing could be offset by selling Heathrow's land for housing but closing the entire airport would create huge job losses in the local economy. Aviation is massively problematic and I certainly don't have the all answers but some of the overly-simplistic ideas often touted by environmental groups and the airlines themselves do little to further the argument.

Ee-op, well put lad. If Leeds get the Blades it should make the TV. We'll have to have a beer and find somewhere locally showing it. Let these glory hunters see what real fans look like! :) Are the Wendies not still in the competition?

This idea of storing energy produced at non-peak times.... Now I'm no scientist (far from it in fact) but do we not have giant super-batteries to store this stuff in till we need it?

Who the heck is still drinking tea past four o'clock?! Why isn't the end of Eastenders accompanied by the sound of clinking glasses, the opening of cans and bottles, and the popping of corks? Tea!? At 8 o'clock?! In the evening?! I thought this nation could pride itself on its alcohol consumption....

I'd have said that Daffs and Northern monkeys are fatsos. :) Still, they might be fat, but at least they're happy. Brendan, have you been reading that BBC article on the use of statistics again?!

Not in East Dulwich but this Xmas a BIG hollywood star will be treading the boards in Bromley. From Hollywood to Hardup Hall for Guttenberg And if anyone is wondering why, the answer is no doubt due to the Stonecutters!

I concur until his last line about "no good bands without a bass player". As one of the first commentators points out this includes the White Stripes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Two quality bands. IMO of course.

You and me both Keef. And I say that with no animosity towards 'Pool either. Makes a good argument for the return of the old style European Cup, not this Chamions League malarky.
