  1. Who gets to decide what is appropriate? I don't particularly care for the evangelical churches either but they clearly serve the community and are, at least, clean and tidy for the most part.
  2. Polyester? Oh dear. Don't speak to me again.

This was one.... he didn't > let me down Glad to be of service. Next week - how to buller those parade ground boots and how to remove a chutney stain from your mustard cords.
  4. We still have a fax machine at work (civil service). No idea when the last time anyone used it or received anything. But it made the office move with us last week.
  5. I rewax my Barbour once or twice a year. You can buy their wax online or in good outdoor shops. Other wax is available. It doesn't take long and is quite therapeutic. Heat the wax gently until a liquid and then rub in with vigour. Hang to dry or use Mrs Mac's hairdryer to speed things up.
  6. Interestingly, in this season's Super Rugby, Australian teams have won 7 from 8 games against their traditionally superior Kiwi opposition. The teams are normally made up of players of the same nationality as the franchise (plus a few pacific islanders) so it seems the Aussies are hitting a seam of form and a production line of very good players at just the right time. Heart says Lions but head is beginning to think the Australia.
  7. A fellow XKCD reader, obvs. Have you read any more from that chap's series of "Things I Won't Work With"? I don't know one end of a test tube from another but even I know that some of this stuff sounds utterly horrific. When discussing the rather smelly selenophenol he notes its smell is "...the biggest stinker I have run across. . .imagine 6 skunks wrapped in rubber innertubes and the whole thing is set ablaze. That might approach the metaphysical stench of this material." Marvellous. [insert curry/pooh joke here]
  8. The fascinating and disturbing world of FOOF (or dioxygen diflouride to give it its scientific name). http://pipeline.corante.com/archives/2010/02/23/things_i_wont_work_with_dioxygen_difluoride.php Highlight: "Being a high energy oxidizer, dioxygen difluoride reacted vigorously with organic compounds, even at temperatures close to its melting point. It reacted instantaneously with solid ethyl alcohol, producing a blue flame and an explosion. When a drop of liquid 02F2 was added to liquid methane, cooled at 90?K., a white flame was produced instantaneously, which turned green upon further burning. When 0.2 (mL) of liquid 02F2 was added to 0.5 (mL) of liquid CH4 at 90?K., a violent explosion occurred." This stuff can, literally, set ice on fire. Mental.
  9. Likewise Twickenham. They call it the British disease, yet it happens at football matches world wide. In the preceeding 72 hours there was violence in Germany where Bayern Munich fans fought those of Nuremberg with 60 arrested and 16 police injured whilst in Brazil two were shot dead at a venue of next year's World Cup. Perhaps it is just a football disease? I cannot think of another high-profile sport that witnesses such levels of anti-social and violent behaviour from fans?
  10. I love how Barry Hearn attempted to blame the FA for the late kick off and the police for not intervening quickly enough. Absolute tool. Where is the personal responsibility? Did you need to spend 6 hours before kick-off getting sh*t-faced and then decide to take it out on other fans? Anyone force you to do that? And why does this behaviour not happen at other clubs who seemingly manage to play football in the early evening without kick seven shades of shite out of each other?
  11. Wilcard choice - Christian Wade of Wasps....absolutely electric pace and Jason Robinson-esque elusiveness. Scoring for fun at the moment in the league.
  12. But imagine if we found that footage....it must exist somewhere.

  15. Don't get John/edhistory started, Ted. We'll have sequestered half of Southwark and Lewisham before tea. Still, Brad Pitt found SE15's post-apocalyptic overtones just right for his latest film... http://metro.co.uk/2011/09/22/brad-pitt-takes-world-war-z-shoot-to-peckham-158988/ Couldn't spot the Heygate in the trailer though: [insert gag about zombies/Rye Lane/Sat morning here]
  16. Well, if we are allowed to expand into SE15....
  17. If it is the folks behinf Brawn, Terroir and Soif that's a puzzling move. Were they not the food consultants for the menu changes that caused G&B so many problems? Not exactly a ringing endorsement of their food and price point. Personally, I'm more than happy to see a new place open and will come to it open-minded but it's a strange turn of events if the rumours are true.

  19. Is your bill an estimate or from an actual reading?
  20. Treacle Junior. Small indy film starring Aiden Gillan (of Wire, Game of Thrones fame). Quite decent. Chase scene set on Peckham Rye.
  21. Quite a lot in Kennington - The Lobster Pot has a good reputation for sea food. And there is a lovely Italian deli on Bonnington Sq called Italo.
  22. Would do the train but travelling to middle of yonder and will need the car.
  23. I need to head to Wales on Friday morning and will be gunning for the M4 from 8am (can't leave earlier due to dropping sprog off at nursery). Question is, which route? Vauxhall, Chelsea embankment, Hammersmith flyover and out? Or is that going to be chocker block at that time? Any suggestions?
  24. I don't know, something about a council painting a nuclear shelter in their corporate colour smacks of 1970s British values. The "that'll do" mentality. Made our nation great.
