  2. Rather than respond to an existing thread, I thought I would just point out why some people on the forum take umbrage with some of the language used, when discussing issues of race and culture. It is often considered to be irrelevant when someone addresses the language used when describing people (often of African/Caribbean descent). However often there is a high chance of the description being inaccurate, ie an African can be white or black, or have an Asian appearance, so 'African Appearance' cannot describe a person particularly someone with a london accent. Often challenges to the language used is seen as a diversion from the issue, as an 'unnecessary comment' that is purely inflammatory rather than helpful, or worse the dreaded 'pc' . What might be more helpful, is if the points raised, were seen as interesting, perhaps even important, as they are a perspective that you may not have considered. Language highlights a subconscious thought process that is so often overlooked. If we are all potential members of a jury, how then, might our unconscious thoughts play out? If we just legitimise our thoughts based on the number of people that agree with us, rather than analyse the points raised by those that don't, How do we Empathise outside the privileges of our own perspective? This is with regard to many issues not just race, also class and gender. None of us benefit from 'Divide & Rule' I hope the new year does bring more reasoned debate, a listening ear, or an agreement to disagree. There are so many positives with regard to this forum, I am hopeful we can extend it a little more. Wishing everyone a restful joyful holiday, be happy in 2016

  7. Plans drawn by a non Cyclist then.....
  8. I agree re no fly zones Islamic State would not be threatened by a no-fly zone since it lacks an air force. The Assad government and those supporting it would be the only target which would threaten England's relationship with Russia. However, What a captive can glean from Daesh is to understand how they think, how they operate. I am not saying his response is necessary the answer. You can't talk to them, they make no sense, people are recruited on the premise that the West hate Muslims. Going in bombing and therefore killing civilians will do nothing to counteract that idea. There are only 36 doctors left in Syria. Civilians need to have a safe haven, for fear of being killed by their own government, Daesh, Russia, America France and now England.....
  9. Cameron, like so many other MP's really haven't got a clue, an alternative idea to defeat Daesh does not even occur to them. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/nicolas-henin-the-man-who-was-held-captive-by-isis-for-10-months-says-how-they-can-be-defeated-a6757336.html

  12. Might get more joy from the local small business? I always find unusual little things that you can't get anywhere else in the world? I believe this scheme has just past, but there is no harm, only good that can come from continuing to shop independently http://www.forbes.com/sites/nicoleleinbachreyhle/2015/11/27/why-small-business-saturday-is-the-most-important-day-to-shop-this-holiday-season/

  15. Leinster, I am surprised you find milk alternatives rubbish for cooking. We use Rice Dream and it's absolutely fine in everything, including on its own. For mashed potatoes, we just use olive oil as I prefer butter to the marg he eats, but apart from that. I do risotto without cheese and dairy, with a good stock, he loves it. Winter is great for various stews. Potatoe cakes and rostis are good. It's the summer where things get tricky. Hope you found some inspiration from these recipes.
  16. Did you get any help re this?
  17. Most of Mars and spencer products not suitable for nut sufferers. Kinnerton from some big sainsburys. Gummies if they are not veggie. Bear in mind that nuts and wheat Allergies often tie in with dairy too but not always.you can get soya desserts, but might be allergic to soya too. personally I would stick to haribo skittles, drum sticks, jellie and boiled sweets stuff like that, and kinnerton chocolate bars.
  18. Hooray Cameron has signed a nuclear deal with China, putting a shot to renewable energy growth in the UK. Well done! Marvellous, sod the environment lets frack and go nuclear, Brilliant. Still loving the Tories are we? They are doing a marvellous job bravo! Hoot hoot

  20. These old classics didn't just misrepresent women, they underrepresented cultural/racial differences. Discussion about gender issues ought not be discussed in isolation IMO. There is a huge discrepancy between children's story books exported from the uk which is huge compared to those imported from around the world. Pippi longstocking was one of the few because it won awards in Sweden. Perhaps it's more likely to change if we request books we would like to read from Independent book shops and less likely to happen via Amazon which is well known for its exploitative practices?
  21. I thought that anything that overhangs in public space or in your garden is yours to pick? That's a rule I adhere to anyway!

I agree I use them for lining bins, outside over for wrapping lunches in case of leakage. The list Is endless, really miss them when they are not around..... I figured I will have to just not line bins And wash them very regularly. I am sure this will increase the amount of plastic bought. Still haven't managed to purchase compost bag liners from sainsburys as they Are ALWAYS sold OUT.... The same will undoubtedly be true in relation to less 'environmental' bags. Particularly from ?1 shops..... I don't bu newspapers anymore would would be useful for a lot of these tasks, so it though it will be more work, I am prepared to do it. Somehow I believe as I usually don't take plastic bags for smaller purchased and usually use my bag or panniers, for larger shops, supermarkets force me to use bags because of all the excess packaging in the products. I think they should start there then we can use boxes from the supermarket or our own bags more easily? I always want to shed all the baggage at the cashpoint just to show the excess involved, and how much space the shopping needs. Might be good to start with the source rather than the outcome?
  23. I agree that's London Is a great place to grow up AT THE MOMENT. My concern is what it will become as the government stops funding more charities, and museums and galleries having to charge, so less free cultural activities. Lack of affordable housing and more temporary contracts so less job security. Pubs and clubs are closing, and Laws banning gathering In public places have been introduced. The privatisation of public spaces, and more I feel will adversely affect the freedom that our kids and ourselves will experience. I doubt that London will be the thriving, economically and culturally diverse City that we know and love.
  24. Think I will turn the tables for a bit, leave the man alone http://www.theguardian.com/news/video/2015/sep/15/cassetteboy-cameron-corbyn-video
