  1. pa123, i'm intrigued, are you saying there is another way, short of working anyway and earning pittance? I think we should put pressure on the government to do more, surely now is the time, I know of some who have had to give up part time work due to tax credit changes. The government are stripping away at the little independence we had left....I digress...maybe we should start another thread, and a revolution.
  2. It is ridiculous that many parents have little choice and are left with no choice but to give up their work which is part of their identity and independence, and become full times parents, or work to give it all to childcare. 90% of motherss in the netherlands are in full time employment, with their child being cared for by others. We do not have that choice here, we certainly are not able to 'have it all'.
  3. Womanofdulwich wrote: 'I have to say that for some families who are not British ,they come from a culture where slavery/ subservience is the way of things'. Are you serious about this statement? slavery is not 'the culture of other nations' it is a shocking, brutal treatment perpetrated by the British and America against 'other nations' as you call it. Please note kapaxiana has noticed the amount of immigrants who have been on the receiving end of this disrespect.
  4. Hi Sanne This time last year, I was in the same position as yourself. I fretted about which school to send my child to. I went to the school three times. Twice on a tour, and a 3rd occasion to meet the head. She was very approachable, very dynamic, and is totally dedicated to the children. She is there at every school event, very supportive. My son loves it there, and I am very happy with the school too. I went in recently to help out at the school, and once again was blown away by what I saw. The nursery teacher is absolutely fantastic (wish my son had gone to nursery there in many ways) The work displayed on the walls was very impressive, and the classes I passed were very well managed and sounded like the kids were really enjoying learning. The outdoor play pods and outdoor learning garden is fantastic (I went and worked on it today with some parents and children). It's very good and its getting better. They have done so much since he has started. Please go and visit and get a feel for the place. For me, it just 'felt right'. I am a bit surprised to hear about how the bullying was dealt with (Was the new head in then?) Sounds like this happened before she made her mark. She has very strict rules around bullying and bad behaviour in general, so I suspect this was before her time. We are happy with it.
  5. wingless bird, the police have enough to deal with. If he is a patient the mental health institutions will know about him. If they don't perhaps they would assess his mental health. Any time in a police station/cell could have a terrible effect on him and make the situation into a more serious one. It seems to me you are assuming he is bad rather than mad... surely its better to go directly to the hospital, and cut out the middle man (ie the police) who really have no role in the well being of the mentally ill. here 's a link from mind to support my point: http://www.mind.org.uk/help/advice_lines/mindinfoline_faq Please do the right thing and contact a mental health institution if anyone sees this man.
  6. Maybe it is best to report him to outreach mental health services? I think he probably just needs to take his medication more than he needs to spend the night in a police cell.
  7. talk talk has been rubbish from day one as far as i am concerned. constantly drops out, but it is cheap.....you get what you pay for i guess.
  8. could this mean that the hermetically sealed bubble has actually been broken? 'my life will never be the same again' might have to uproot and head for the countryside. Might see an influx of estate agents on the streets of East Dulwich, and perhaps a gun shop?
  9. MY SONS NURSERIES much loved teddy has been left behind at sunray gardens today..,.. has anyone found him? He was last seen in the children's playground, most likely to have been under the tree...but in all honestly could be anywhere now. Wearing blue jeans, a white t shirt, and has a blue tie round his neck. He has not had any tea, nor brushed his teeth, and he is not wearing enough clothes to keep him warm tonight. He will be sorely missed by everyone who loves him. ANY INFORMATION THAT WOULD HELP LOCATE HIS WHEREABOUTS WILL BE TREATED WITH THE STRICTEST CONFIDENTIALITY. HE IS IRREPLACEABLE.
  10. This is a concern, lots of schools are being forced into becoming academies in an attempt to oust the LEA. Not only this but it diminishes job security for teachers, and all in all in some way privatizes schools in my opinion. It gives the schools carte blanche to set their own criteria etc. Whilst talking to a teacher friend last night who is also in the same position, I was told that if you don't become an academy, the government will force it upon you, and you wi9ll also select a sponsor for the school. McDonalds sponsoring schools? Is that where it's heading? All in keeping with the Tory policy PRIVATISATION BY STEALTH.
  11. i think the reason they are striking is because teachers have had a pay freeze for two years, Their salaries are seemingly low, they have to make a much bigger contribution towards their pension, and their pensions plans are being reduced drastically....I am a parent, but I support the teachers and the unions wholeheartedly. One day out of work/school is worth it for a society with better work conditions.... Difficult for some and I empathise, but maybe worth it in the long run?
  12. Hi Anna-r My child has had eczema since he was 6 weeks old. I have resorted to hydrocortisone 0.5% when it was really bad, but my doc advised not to use it all the time, as his skin would become dependent on it. It thins the skin out. Anyway that's just my experience. Other things you could try is: porridge oats wrapped in muslin, tie the ends or put an elastic round it, put in the bath whilst the water is running. This should moisten the skin. if you are still breast feeding, apparently breast milk on the face helps (I never tried that, always forgot) I was told that certain foods could trigger eczema, so if you are breast feeding may be worth avoiding dairy altogether and maybe slowly reintroducing each one over a course of 3 days, this will help you to ascertain which dairy products in particular may affect your child. Moisturise, moisturise moisturise, never let the skin get dry. funny thing is that my sons eczema cleared on his body years ago, but still remained on his face. I then cut out gluten which helped, then I also recently changed soap power as it was still on his cheeks. I found ecover was a problem as it has essential oils in it, i now use eco laundry from a shop in brixton which is a concentrated liquid. Also fabric conditioners are a no no. His face looks soooo much better now, but I still watch his diet. Food allergies are often a problem for children with eczema, so perhaps a prick test would help to determine what foods could be a problem. The usual ones are: dairy, eggs, sugar, soya, nuts, some fish. Wine has egg white in it for tannin purposes, as well as a lot of chemicals, so if he is allergic to the wine, perhaps this is why, also suphites, which can be a skin irritant. I noticed my sons ezcema really cleared up when he was poorly and didn't eat anything but fruit..... have you noticed anything similar. Your doctor should be able to refer you to get a prick test, which will help you to ascertain problem/trigger foods. good luck with it all, it usually clears up after a time. hope this helps.
  13. 'So, yeah, if you live on Crawthew Grove, keep an eye out, there may well be scum out there hoping to burgle a house or two as lots of people leave this road on Bank holiday weekends.' there you have it robbers.... valuable information.
  14. i'd be up for it.
  15. thank you leta. I've heard she's wonderful. I think i should just stop worrying about this school thing. its no biggy. he's pretty chilled about it. i should use him as an example. Everything will be fine..................
  16. Thanks cactus, I figure he'll probably be ok, provided he doesn't pick up on me stressing about whether he'll be ok! I guess its a reassurance from my point of view, a sort of buffer!
  17. I'm sorry to hear it, must have been scary. glad you are ok.
  18. what's wrong with death anyway? if you believe in karma, she has another chance to redeem herself. Who knows who she might be when she/he/it comes back......

Tarot, take a look at the fact that the council are selling housing stock, at auctions, for pittance, to bankers and the like, who then give them a quick makeover, and sell them for double the money they paid for them. On top of that the council are not building, and they are not maintaining the homes. Where on earth are you getting your information from? Look at the real issues, stop looking for scapegoats.
  20. I agree with you leta, I think all mothers are aware of how much hard work is involved. Whether its considered to be a 'career' or a job. What's a career anyway? We digress.......2 modes of pay of course sounds fishy, but then again 'leisure money' sounds fishy to me also...... but sticking to the point..........may be best to get clarification on the cash and salary modes of payment that her potential new boss is offering.
