SeanMacGabhann Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why would we be different Brendan? You know as well as I do that in some societies being catholic is as much a part of who you are culturally as being Jewish, Sikh or whatever is in others. I don?t agree with it but when it comes to tolerance I don?t think it is ok to think prejudice is wrong against some groups but not others.

You see very, very few fights in London considering what a big city it is. It?s the sleepy suburban small towns where you get the barneys.

Yeah but for many people (I?m thinking lots of Catholics, Jews and Muslims here) it isn?t as much of a conscious choice as it was for us Sean. I think you are aware of that. We are still obligated to respect peoples? beliefs.

So? Saying this LegalEagle-ish Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Monica appears to be doing > that very catholic thing of ignoring facts > presented to her based on a blind faith?. Is making a statement about a person?s character based on their faith. That is blind prejudice you may as well be casting aspersions based on race or sex. Personally I don?t give a dam about the catholic church or any of the others but I know prejudice when I see it.

I think she was complaining about your general lack of sensitivity towards and prejudice viewpoint of a specific group of people. Would you say this: LegalEagle-ish Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Monica appears to be doing > that very Jewish thing of ignoring facts > presented to her based on a blind faith. Why is > pointing out the truth considered to be > insensitive? LegalEagle-ish Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Monica appears to be doing > that very Muslim thing of ignoring facts > presented to her based on a blind faith. Why is > pointing out the truth considered to be > insensitive? You can?t bang on about acceptance and tolerance in one breath and then be blatantly prejudice in another.

That really is a terrible thing to happen. There really are some vile people out there.

If I start a list I won?t know where to stop. How big is this emergency bar, how much stock can it take and is there space for a dart board, fireplace and a wing backed chair?

Is the N-word necessarily racist?
Brendan replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Perhaps. Rappers have been using it now as a matter of course for over 20 years. For many reasons, to point a finger at other peoples? racism, to make a statement about their own marginalising, as a shock tactic, as a joke, to show a fraternity with other rappers, because it has become the norm, as an ironic term of endearment, because it offends, because it is controversial and sells records? and I?m sure for many other reasons. I think the reasons depend on the artist and are as diverse as hip-hop itself. -
I think they have steered clear of the area since one mistakenly woke Mockney from his hungover slumbers early on a Saturday.

To be honest I can?t see myself going to this Sainsbury?s for anything that I currently just nip to Val?s for. I may go to it for things that I normally drive to Sainsbury?s at DKH for but that?s business that was going to a Sainsbury?s anyway. I was also unaware that the inner cities belonged to someone in specific.

In a word, yes.

Ratty may have been ranting but to a degree he has a point. I say this as someone who has taken a lot of time to get an objective view of the British political landscape since I moved here 7 years ago and not as someone who supports a certain agenda. The supporters of the conservative party have a very arrogant demeanour about their party being ?right? but very little to back it up when you ask about what good it will do for society in general. Apart from an assertion that what is good for them will obviously be good for everyone as long as they stop being so dam insolent. (That?s not to say that those in power in the labour party are any better to be honest) I used to have quite a lot of sympathy for and interest in what the conservative party could do but I have now witnessed what happens to them when they catch the scent of power on the wind. There is a mean spirited spitefulness behind the glee in many of their eyes that leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. (That?s not aimed at MM who I genuinely believe has sincerity in his political assertions) I?ve come to sum it up like this. If you benefit from something but someone else somewhere loses out and you see that as good and just because you are more deserving and you have to look out for you and yours. If that is where the moral thought process ends for you then the current ethos in the conservative party seems to cater to you. If however when people lose out and it doesn?t affect you directly you still see it as a negative thing for you because you are part of the same society and what is bad for one person is bad for everyone else. Well then you?re a bit stuck on who to support. The labour party?s idea of maintaining a socialist system that exist separately from but is dependant upon a modern capitalist economy equates to little more than a type of economic apartheid in my mind. Whereas the conservative idea of making poorer people take responsibility for their financial security will not work for the benefit of everyone without serious readjustment of the economy to address the wealth gap. But curbs on excess and the raising of low wages so that people can live with comfort and dignity will not be popular with tory voters so will not happen. It?s not going to make much difference for those of us in the middle but I suppose it all comes down to how you see yourself as part of society. Anyway where was I actually going with this? Perhaps it just reflects the rambling malaise of dilemma that many of us are being faced with at the moment.

Why do you care silverfox? Do you want leave to be able to use it? Well it?s not illegal so go ahead if you want but don?t be surprised if people take offence much in the same way as they would if you started shouting cunt at the top of your voice every five minutes. Otherwise just recognise that it is a word with many racist connotations which offends many people and it is therefore just good manners to avoid using it. -

Yeah it?s the nut cancer November charity thing. It?s been happening for about 4 years now although this year it seems to have caught on a bit more.

Well blow me down. They done gone got themselves a token poor person. Or so the cynical amongst us may say. But I do concede MM?s initial point. Even though it is a blatant effort to get votes in an area populated by people who most conservatives have little identification with (and again those cynical bastards amongst may say, little concern or empathy for) I do think this guy will probably better identify with the community and represent it than ?arriot H.

I don?t see why people seem surprised that catholic priests end up being dysfunctional, weird or perverted individuals. The job description basically says, ?Need a support network? Want to feel important? Unable to have a normal relationship with another person? Try the priesthood.?

Why do people always say that? In my one score and ten years on this earth a sheep has not once asked me for a humbug.
