  1. This link may also help ............. www.lcc.org.uk/index.asp?PageID=391
  2. Interesting Chener Books - I've learned something Most places I see are OK until disturbed in some way - some mentioned in those links given above - for example; * underpinning an one property in a terrace/pair with a concrete float so creating movement with the other/s - no longer done very often! * planting new, especially non-native trees too close or allowing treesto grow too large - tree roots typically same spread horizontally as tree is high * some change in water flow - e.g. paving over a previously garden with earth open to the sky so drying out clay or a long term leaking drain or pipe - clay ?heaves? (swells ) both as it dries and as it gets wetter Seems to me living in a Victorian house is a bit like driving an old car - one needs to know it?s foibles
  3. On good locks ...... http://www.lcc.org.uk/ and view the video
  4. See http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/ for rides and more
  5. Lots of stolen bikes end up in Brick Lane Market
  6. Yeah - open back truck came up our road today - would have had my neighbour's roof box from his front garden it it was not locked to a padlock ring.
  7. You cannot get direct to EAST Croydon from East Dulwich - its East Dulwich to WEST Croydon and then a tram - or change again at ??Streatham?? Hence Forest Hill a better bet as that IS direct to East Croydon
  8. A solution would be to buy a folding bike? see e.g. www.hhbikes.co.uk/brompton.html Not cheap but less than a travel card?
  9. And do join the London Cycling Campaign who will be pleased to help See www.lcc.org.uk
  10. Huh - dunno about it not being good going along the wrong way - dangerous going the right way - came down there @ 08.30hrs on the bike and nearly got taken out by a car driver motorist who drive across the white line coming along Crawthew Grove from Lordship Lane without giving way to me as I came down the slope towards Spurling Road - good thing my brakes worked!
  11. Ah Thanks James - so OK to cycle up there the "wrong" way?
  12. Indeed - contra flow lane is what I was expecting Would feel like a crim going along there against the one way flow Where is a local councilor when you need one?
  13. There has been a cycle gap in Spurling Road off the Goose Green Roundabout for several months but no signage. Does anyone know why not?
  14. Thanks Bic - that's clear and helpful
  15. On another matter, can anyone be clear about using an under 16 card (free on buses ) on trains and underground? e.g. can you add credit to one of these for trains? And if so all the complications above apply I presume :-(
  16. Would guess originally they were waiting for the concrete or whatever they are set in to "go off" - and then have taken their time coming back to finish
  17. http://www.bellenden.net/srug/news/vital-rail-link-should-not-be-scrapped
  18. If you do want to go to Paddington, best to get to Victoria (185 bus or train from Peckham Rye) - then Circle / District to Paddington - but do check it is all working - I do this once a month or so to get to Swindon at present - driving not an option I would consider - I like to arrive calm and having read my in-tray! I've tried the stopping train that Amelie mentions and changing at Reading but it takes longer for me - but YMMV (your mileage may vary) see www.tfl.gov.uk for London guidance, www.nationalrail.co.uk for trians
  19. OK - let me know if you need help - not exactly the right time to start! The bike shops at Herne Hill and Balfes in East Dulwich plus London Recumbents in Dulwich Park all stock ecomomically priced bikes - and there are sometimes offers here
  20. Re cycling a friend of ours work at Lewisham and cycles - might be willing to share her route with you - shall I ask? also you may need to know about cycle parking etc?
  21. If you drive carefully at 20mph, keep in high gear low revs (e,g, move of in second gear and do not spin drive wheels) and have reasonable tyres. a light foot etc etc some back streets seem quite empty - I'm just guiding a friend (from Loughhborough junction to Nunhead) - up Herne Hill Road, right into Ferndene, left down Denmark Hill and right up Champoin Hill, across Dog Kennel Hill. down Grove Hill, left and right into Malf Road, Avondale and Maxted to up Crystal Palace Road, left into Underhill left on Dunstans, up Colyton / Homestall (oops - some silly b----er driving fast has just hit a parked car!!) and home Hope that helps someone - if you have any grip at all try it as the roads leading to all the hills e.g. Forest Hill Road seem blocked by stuck cars
  22. Thanks - Met Police pointed me to .... http://www.met.police.uk/traffic/forms.htm
  23. "Cyclists can kill pedestrians as well," Well yes but .....1% - cars 67% http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/ped-casualties-in-greater-london-march-2009.pdf
