And the council have promised to extend their free gym and swim offer to all residents in July ? there's currently a pilot for those under 18 and over 60. Has anyone used this? According to the Southwark site, Dulwich Leisure Centre's free swim hours for the over-60s are 3-4pm Tue and Thu, with gym 8-10am Mon.

Hi cella,

The promise of free swim and gym technically is happening as you describe but not exactly the spirit when this election promise was made. It didn't come with such caveats even when challenged. it was simply and directly stated as free swim and gym.

There's an ad for our new leisure centre overlords, Sports and Leisure Management (SLM Ltd.), in this week's Southwark News - saying "Coming Soon". No details yet, but you can register your interest here for a chance to win six months' free membership:

Based in the contract award notice, it appears to be a management contract only. Assets like gym equipment are likely purchased and owned by the council. That's my interpretation of the notice anyway:

From the mouth of the horse...

More info on launch date but new equipment yes (if not immediately then very soon)

Few changes to offerings (hot yoga anyone?)

Unlikely swim only or gym only membership but more likely single site membership

Def address maintenance

All existing memberships will carry over

New membership packages being costed now

Full comms on all this at contract live

More space for free weights, increasingly popular for both genders and it can be quite daunting vying for space with more experienced lifters

... an additional squat rack because it's really popular equipment (not a smith machine)

...failing that benches with safety spotters to free up the rack a little more

On the whole I find the gym ok as I mainly use it for the classes. I do hope that the new management comes with better maintenance contract suppliers as machines can sometimes be out of action for some time. The air conditioning is variable and, my main bugbear, the entry turnstile rarely works first time so you have to have several goes at it with a queue behind you. Whether these issues are down to the previous poor managers or duff maintenance contracts isn't clear but hopefully the Council will have incorporated better performance targets into the new contract.

I echo the points about free weights/squat rack. That area at peak times is always busy yet you will find at least 10 pieces of CV equipment not in use. Makes sense to slightly alter it. That is very individual to my needs however so I woudl imagine a poll or forum of some kind of existing members would provide a more general view.

The time it takes to repair equipment is laughable i woudl like to see that improved.

The situation with the turnstile is ridiculous. I know of a member who didn't pay membership for a year and was never challenged due to the turnstile situation. It's in their own interest to resolve it and extend it, single file first thing in the morning is unnecessary.

Improvements in the consistency of classes would be a bonus.

The air con needs addressing ASAP.

The air con is the biggest issue for me, yesterday was so unbearably hot I left after 20 mins (and I'm an Australian who isn't afraid of hot weather), they used to have freestanding units but these seem to have disappeared...bring on the new management! However must say, I hope they keep the really nice, helpful blond guy on reception, he is one of the few who is genuinely helpful.

    • I think the Brixton Pound lives on, so there must be some kind of appetite for it, but I'm afraid I doubt it would be very useful for me.
    • My primary issue is the noise level and the fact that it begins at dusk and continues well into the early hours, the odd random bang being possibly the worst aspect as you never know when the next volley will occur. This is no longer about celebrating a turning point as the clock strikes 12am, but more a lengthy indulgence in ear shattering bangs, where there also seems to be competition as to who can create the loudest most startling barrage of sustained noise. A new thing is daytime fireworks, where buyers are urged to forget the visual aspect and focus on getting the biggest bang for their buck. I am lucky as I am not super sensitive to noise but I really feel for those who are. As for pets, I am afraid there are now many that require serious medication to get them through- and those meds are not cheap. The fault here is not with the animals or people sensitive to extreme bangs, but with those who insist on their right to impose it on all around them, not just for half an hour a few times a year, but for hours on customary dates and now  spreading to random events throughout the year.I  New Year fireworks is a very recent construct, and now Halloween Fireworks are becoming a thing. Why should we encourage and condone a proliferating societal noise addiction? It really is isn't healthy. Let those who wish to damage their eardrums enjoy their pastime through headphones; they can turn the volume up as high as they like.  If last night was the end of it then that is great but I think there'll be more through the weekend and more discarded jumbo firework boxes dumped in the park. I hope we follow other countries in adopting low noise fireworks and drone shows instead.
    • NYE is always like this. If you’re concerned about your pets, please consider seeing a vet as they can help. We give our dog valerian and play calming music, which helps especially after long walks and a big dinner. If it’s for yourself, it’s one night, so also suggest seeing your doctor for advice.  It is loud, although more predictable ( kept to evening:to midnight) than Guy Fawkes celebrations which go on for days and are arguably selfish and inconsiderate. Either way, it’s a very difficult time for many.
    • Thanks Rowan! Well done you have done amazing on your fitness journey. Happy New Year EDF and all my wonderful clients whom I've had the pleasure to train this year. I'm looking forward to 2026 🙌🎊
