I suppose it depends on your definition of 'important'.

If you define it as being one of the greatest authors the country has produced, it ought to be Dickens.

If you define it as someone who was awful, but you liked them, it ought to be Emery.

heres a good one for you ronnie biggs used to be a regular in the cherry tree as it was then, now more fondly referred to as the vale, infact the said same establishment was where the great train robbers congregated to celebrate their ill gotten gains.

Wrote a series of historical novels in the 50's. Mostly famous for naval series featuring Hornblower. A better author of naval histories is P O'Brian. Excellent writing, historical accuracy and, as a bonus, an intriguing personal biography involving deceit, divorce and an imagined life.

It would appear, spadetownboy, big time bank blaggers love ED. Michelle Hogg although not deceased,.... "Michelle Hogg, 31, from Woolwich, south-east London, was the first person arrested by Kent police over the ?53m robbery of the Securitas depot in Tonbridge"

former pupil of St John's and St Clement's on North Cross Road.

    • Typically the way 'family run businesses' operate is either to have family members continue the business, or to sell on, either as a site (in this instance) or as a going concern. Either which way this is the way the owners create a 'pension' from the business. The number of suggestions as to alternatives makes me feel that the market for small repairing garages locally may be well served, so selling on the site makes the best financial sense for the owners. It's a sign not of the times but of normal business realities.
    • I agree it's a shame, but it is not a "sign of the times", unless you think that up to now people have never grown older and retired!
