'Indeed, one of the main reasons that the Golden City closed is because an establishment called the Sea Cow opened just a quarter of a mile away in 2003.'

Hmm, somewhat disingenuous methinks. I've been living in ED for 10 years and the Golden City hasn't been open since I moved here and probably a long time before that.

I agree with this; I can't recall a time when it was open. Whenever I've gone to the Royal Mail sorting office I've passed it and always noticed the fact it was closed, and the brown rubber plants. There's been a fish and chip shop in North Cross Road for years, and it's more likely that there were just too many in the area, and quality probably dictated which ones survived.

Is the one Dog Kennel Hill, opposite Quorn Road, ever open? I drive past it but I've never really noticed.

That's what I thought.

That proves that it's strange that the journalist concerned should seem to equate its closure with the opening of Sea Cow, which has been there for three years at most. Plus, it must have been written by someone who lives locally, because Golden City isn't exactly in a main road or prominent place. Which may be why the shop unit has stood empty and unused for so long.

Perhaps Golden City is meant is a metaphor for the doomed chip shops of old, and The Sea Cow a metaphor for the current influx of shiny gastro-chippies. So whilst The Sea Cow was not directly responsible for the closure of Golden City, it could be argued that it is indeed the reason why the Golden City is no longer open.

The journalist couldn't be arsed to check.

"The journalist couldn't be arsed to check."

I think this is the more likely, plus the journalist has ignored the fact that it becomes fairly quickly well known locally which fish and chips shops are good and which are not.

While Sea Cow may be considered good in terms of its quality, its prices may put it outside the reach of some ED residents. I hope it doesn't result in the demise of any cheaper decent local 'chippy', but I suspect it's has a different target clientele.

Good point about even more delivery scooters.

I spoke to Ahmed , the owner , yesterday and it seems that Pie'n'mash is part of his plans.

Ibo

I love the idea of a Pie and Mash shop but I still think it's a shame more people do not visit the well established Manzes on Hill Street in Peckham. I hope Ahmed makes the place look and feel like a traditional Eel and Pie house with the tiled walls and straight backed rows of wooden benches.

Speaking of which, is anything going to happen with Golden City? There is something kind of Miss-Haversham-in-great-expectations about the way it just slowly rots away. Its never cleaned, it never changes, it just sits there rotting year after year. Will it be there - in a further state of decay - 10 years from now? Will the brown plants turn into mounds of gloop? Did someone leave a large order of Cod and Chips at the alter and the store has a broken heart that refusts to be mended until it gets some revenge?

    • I struggled with the parakeets literally decimating the bird feeders within an hour.  I tried squirrel proof ones to see if they helped, but they jammed their claws in the mechanism to stop it closing.  Then the pigeons managed to do the same.  I spent a long time researching the best ideas and came across something on Pinterest.  Someone had used a metal dog cage and attached it to a wooden platform.  So that's what I did!  Once set up, you just hang the feeders inside.  Large birds like pigeons and parakeets cannot get inside.  I get all the small birds, plus starlings.  Not many thrushes or blackbirds around, so have no idea if they could get in.  The squirrels do!  It's amazing watching them slide through narrow gaps.  I also covered the roof of the cage with a piece of plastic to keep the rain off, plus I am just about to replace the cage plastic base with something more mesh like.  It can get a bit gooey after a while, so with mesh, all the dropped seed from the messy goldfinches, will go on to the ground where the pigeons can clear up.  I even added a birdcam.
    • Yep, of course I do - did you not read the bit from the survey about the noise having a negative impact on foraging bats? And like @Angelina I'm aware it affects other people, and if no one complains then it gives them an argument that's it's all ok.  The tree in question was a cherry that everyone loves, didn't need to be touched, and the council admitted was a mistake and shouldn't have happened.  The council and Gala use the 'local' narrative as a benefit, without any figures to back it up. It is used as an argument for the event to go ahead, when there's no basis of fact. The attendees are clearly not local as they've proved they don't give a **** about the area. The council do tell us where the money is spent - 100% on running the Events dept, and a myriad of unlisted free events. They just don't tell us how much, so that we can make an informed decision on whether the gain is with the pain.  Sorry, what was your point again?
