Best England goal ever.....

For me it was a fruitless goal but I'll pop for:

Linekar equaliser against West Germany 1990.

Linekar for me was brilliant and that goal was a "cometh the hour cometh the man" moment and should really have put them in the best position to reach the world cup final, but it was not to be.

Mick is too young to remember stuff like that so it doesn't count. But here it is anyway!

John Barnes's goal was great but it was in a friendly when we should have been playing in Euro '84 so I don't think counts.

How's about Shearer's (3rd) against the Dutch in 1996? A great team goal in a great team performance.

Still struggling against 'Ol comeover though.

Oh I think it counts! It was agaiinst Brazil after all, and in their own backyard of the Maracana at that. Back in 1984 there was still some seriousness in friendlies, unlike the modern, dispiriting kind. A great goal is still a great goal, irrespective of what may or may not be at stake. A run-of-the-mill goal cannot become great simply because it was crucial.
