Keef wrote:- With regards to his being "an icon", George Best is also described as such, and why should he be, but Becks not?

Mainly because Besty was a football genius and outshone anyone he played against, he made good competent players look slow and clumsy.

Rooney has some genius about him too rather like Gazza.

But for my money Best was the most outstanding player ever produced from these little islands, and Beckham is the end result of a publicity campaign which Besty created, being the first footballing superstar.

That's harsh Keef. After United won the European Cup in '68 with an ageing team that included a young Best they should have built the team around him. They fact they didn't and were eventually relegated only tells part of the story. The fact remains that as a player Beckham and anyone other modern day British footballer you care to name is not fit enough to clean the boots of the genius that was George Best.

David Beckham has made the most of his undoubted talent as a footballer and his good looks to make a fortune. He has spoken out more vocally than many against racism and homophobia and seems on balance a rthoroughly decent man far, far better than many of his contemparies.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Best had his last good game at the age of 27 in early '74 by all accounts, I'm quite impressed that anyone on this thread can remember him play.

I struggle to remember anything other than anecdotes from before my 20th year, so that would put the glory boy hyperbolists at 56 years old plus.

Subsequently he was paid by clubs such as Jewish Guild and Brisbane Lions. He wasn't famous for getting out of bed.

I saw him on telly, and he looked cool with his step-overs etc. Very much like Christian Ronaldo but with a heavier ball. When he didn't have the ball he looked more like a sulky Berbatov, refusing to get back and help his midfield.

In that sense I don't think Best deserves comparison with either Rooney as a striker, or Beckham who wasn't.

George Best, most overrated man in football, but evidently ahead of his time.

Well as I'm mid sixties and remember him well, especially on sticky muddy pitches as there was far more rain back in those days and as you so rightly point out, a heavier ball.

Best could keep on his feet better than anyone else, and when all around him were slide tackling only he stayed upright and danced around the recumbent opposition.

Jah you have to admit that both the drunken Gazza and the unfortunate potato faced Rooney, both had something extra in their game which most others could not match.

But Besty was always the best in my slender book of football hero's.

At last something I have in common with David 'Becks' Beckham - he's a Primark man - who knew?

With 'slips' at ?3.00 for five, it's wear them once then press briefly into service as a dish cloth then dispose of them, not worth wasting Ariel Ultra Gel and Calgon tablets washing them is it?

Huguenot, clearly you are speaking as someone who has just had his first shave. Let those of us who were around at the time to appreciate the marvellous skills of, without doubt, one of the world's finest players. In my opinion, George Best ranks as one of the true greats; almost as good as the great Pele.

Totally agree with ??? overall theme.

He did start to put commercial interests ahead of football, especially with the move to the US. He should have realised his football mistake and come back to Europe to play, apparently Victoria is very keen on the Hollywood lifestyle though. There are also endless tales of Beckham going out of his way to do personal favours for individuals and charities (without any PR and off his own bat - before the cynics have a go).

Over rated? If only more people made as much of their talent as he did and when successful gave as much back.

Look forward to seeing him at Spurs.

HUGUENOT! Now you've done it!

George Best is my hero! Do you hear that?! My hero! He is solely responsible for my love of football and, to me, is the greatest player EVER! Oh how devastated I was when he left Manchester United.

Overrated? NEVER! Not in my book.

I agree, he's nice to look at. So what else is important?

Edited to say that I do agree with Keef's tall poppy thing though too.

    • While they struggle with economics of UK plc, collectively we all suffer as a result of their ineptitude.
    • I’ve tried to find details of surgeries being held before but not found any. The section of the Southwark website that details councillors’ surgeries says that: Your locally elected Councillors will be holding a roving surgery programme in the Dulwich Hill area to enable residents to raise any local issues. Residents will be notified by letter in advance of the date, time and specific streets/roads where the surgery will take place.  Surgeries are not held in August, on Bank Holidays, Easter or in Christmas Week.  Dulwich Hill Ward Councillors I’ve never seen any notification of surgeries being held, including on the DH councillors’ social media accounts. I don’t know if any other residents of Dulwich Hill have? Neighbouring wards all seem to have times and places posted for surgeries.
    • I wouldn't feel too bad about that. It's one of the few degree areas that you can do a BA or a BSc in, so it's a fairly wide-ranging and complex subject. Certainly Truss, Kwasi and Reeves seem to struggle with it.
    • I can't access the article - what's the gist?  I took the markets getting jittery when she was crying at PMQs to be a sign that they trusted her. But maybe it was because they were simply worried about any form of instability.  The NIC hikes have stymied the economy, which we could all see a mile off. Will a wealth tax improve things? Does anyone here think the trickle down has any impact and that chasing out the super rich will help things? Or are we just seeing off the biggest contributors to the economy? And has the Kwasi approach ever worked anywhere else?  Economics is not my strong point at all, I'd love to know others' opinions, but it seems to be she has few options, especially as the party is so divided.
