I was just a town planners dream in an open ploughed field then!

In Peter Akroyds London he talks about (not exact words) places having a sort of historical genetic make up so that no matter what you do to try and change a place the character remains intact. Camberwell's anarchic character/soul being an example.

Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens for me then!

We can't take being attached to a third-world country much longer.

I wonder whether this comment is merely overt snobbery, or whehter it's mixed with some covert racism too? Either way Maurice, I agree that you should not be living in Camberwell. You might want to reconsider South London generally.

The labling of anything in Britain as "third world" (trains, health service etc) is useful shorthand for "I am a bit of an idiot with no sense of perspective, you can safely ignore the rest of this post/ column/ party political broadcast etc"

And to avoid lounging, the answer to the thread question is "no".

I equate pissing in the street, jostling to get on buses, spitting on public transport, dropping food and other litter willy nilly as third-world behaviour. I've seen it in Camberwell and Peckham and in central London and Manchester and Leeds. I've also seen it in China and India. Nero

Sorry, Maurice, you'll have to try again. I've got no objection to needle exchanges.

So, no, still no entry to marvellous first world East Dulwich I'm afraid. You'll have to stick it out with the starving masses on the other side of the hill.

I had to add a somewhat serious point to this. Your syringe debate shows why I want to move into ED. In a matter of minutes dozens were out debating and those on different sides were rounding up troops off this board who can and will have an impact on a local issue. Whatever your views, ED has leadership for a community voice. Camberwell does not. A few talk ideas and such, but no momentum, no voice, no progress.

    • Yep I would definitely advise booking Janda. It was rammed and we even had to wait a bit for our reservation.
    • This reminds me of "the grasshopper" at Westerham when a tabloid paper did an exposé about their swinger parties (many many years ago)  The result was that every man and his dog went there to see if they could get in to a party. Pub did amazing business but think the club may have closed as a result.  Bet the Telegraph article will be great publicity for belair sex parties and every pervert under the sun will invade Dulwich village and the square (of shame)
    • I find Fusion are Horrendous. When they ran Forest Hill pools it was always (although a new facility at the time) really grubby. Overflowing filthy toilets, dirty changing rooms, slippery floors and filthy swimming pool with cloudy water and Lifeguards who did'nt give a damn about teens  jumping in the pool and making trouble pushing and splashing adult and elderly swimmers. It was grim and I cancelled my membership and joined Dulwich leisure Centre because I got tired of complaining about changing rooms that smelt of p**s and used sanitary products left on the floor...and nothing changing..new managers would come promise improvement and making zero difference. In the End they lost the contact and FHP is run by Better and it really is....Better! I'm now happy to go there its well staffed, clean and well run. Unfortunately unless Fusion loose the contract for the Lido I fear things won't improve.
