I'm afraid I can merely replicate everyone else's school reports:

"Could try harder"

"Shows flashes of good work but fails to maintain high standards"

"Could go far if he applied himself"

I like who I am but part of me can't help but feel that they were right. Smart but lazy seems an apt description of many forumites. We like to think of ourselves as too good for our unfulfilling jobs and relieve the boredom online. Never have I met such a wonderful bunch of underachievers!! B)

Seeing this has made me dig out my "National Record of Achievement" to find the following quote from my form teacher, written as I was completing my GCSE's

"She is quaintly void of many teenage anxieties and refreshingly naive"

think he meant no lad would look at me twice so no chance of me getting pregnant or having any close shaves!!

Oh buggie that's ace.

Mine were mostly about me being great verbally, but not so good at written work (the words messy and unfinished appeared repeatedly). Oh and apparently they could tell I did my homework in five minutes on the bus.

The worst were my games and PE reports. We got separate grades for ability, effort, achievement and attendance. I always got E for ability, B for effort and E for achievement. In other words, so little natural talent that even trying really quite hard I acheived nothing.

Edited because my written work and spelling are still a bit sloppy :-$

I had never eaten pumpkin, sweet potato or celeriac before I went to Australia in 1993. I like sweet potato a lot, but the thought of straight celeriac on a plate makes me want to boke rings round me.

BB, blowing you a kiss! Bang on about feeling that horrible frustrated but.. but.. but.. anger when up against immovable illogic.

Buggie, that's the best report comment I've ever heard... I am now envisaging you floating elegantly but chastely around your school in Victorian attire... :) I was never in danger of boys looking at me at school but not because I was quaintly naive, more red-faced and spotty.

Anna, I'm going to call you on that one; you're a doctor you must have been dead clever at school!

And finally DC how dare you, underachiever indeed! Speak for yourself, young man.

I'm afraid I can merely replicate everyone else's school reports:

Likewise. Headmaster was kind enough to tell me during one of many hours of detention (which often needed a 4 hour catch up on a Saturday morning) that I would never amount to anything, and that I might as well give up because people like me never amount to anything and often die young, poor and alone. I thought this sounded very rock'n'roll!

He would then go on to explain how my older brother had been a model student etc etc.

Interesting, I thought, from a man who (years after I left) was subsequently sacked for scamming a shed-load of cash from the school. http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/search/display.var.312676.0.suspended_head_will_face_hearing.php Word was he wasn't even who he said he was, but an identity thief who was not even qualified to teach, though I have no idea if that is true or not.

Mores et Studia...

Moos, are you suggesting that I made my bad reports up to fit in with the cool kids on here?

That would be a little needy don't you think?

No, it's all true. I mean I'm not going to claim I was a real thickie, that would be silly, but my teachers all felt I could've done better if I'd applied myself.

*looks a bit sheepish*

And as it happens they were right. I didn't get into medical school the first time around only after a couple of resits and a bit of applying myself.

all this more likely means that most of us recognized, albeit subconsciously in many cases, that the education system is geared to factory-produce "workers" and not to... ummmm.. educate

But to be fair most of us don't want educating - given the largest access to information ever, and beyond the wildest dreams of only a few generations ago, most people seem happy to use the internet for porn and slebri'ies

so yes that's me down as yet another "he's alright but could do better"

That covers all our forumista's Sean, as were all posting local stuff rather than bettering our selves gathering internet goodies for the next degree.

I do not gather porn personally, as I have always considered sex as a participation sport;-)

Ah but SteveT if you read the 'Has this forum changed your behaviour thread' you will see lots of instances not of people necessarily "bettering" themselves - but certainly people thinking about different issues, trying new things, gently challenging themselves - to be more sociable, to be greener, to debate issues in different ways, to be more community focused...to name but a few.

And above all what we do on here is engage with each other - and actually how many of us can we were engaged or participated at school.

So that's how I justify whiling the hours away on here. That said I wouldn't rule out me developing a penchant for porn in the future... perhaps that could be a new thread, Favourite Porn Sites ...now that's what I call education.

There?s something about me. I now know how to play 12 bar blues on the mouth organ. I also have a very bad beer and JD induced headache this morning. I can tell you that for free.

If my memory isn't playing tricks, I photographed one of their annual calendars back when it was called Midland Bank: the theme was 'purses through the ages'. We had to set up a temporary studio at the V&A Museum.

    • Post much better this Xmas.  Sue posted about whether they send Xmas cards; how good the post is,  is relevant.  Think I will continue to stay off Instagram!
    • These have reduced over the years, are "perfect" lives Round Robins being replaced by "perfect" lives Instagram posts where we see all year round how people portray their perfect lives ?    The point of this thread is that for the last few years, due to issues at the mail offices, we had delays to post over Christmas. Not really been flagged as an issue this year but I am still betting on the odd card, posted well before Christmas, arriving late January.
    • Two subjects here.  Xmas cards,  We receive and send less of them.  One reason is that the cost of postage - although interestingly not as much as I thought say compared to 10 years ago (a little more than inflation).  Fun fact when inflation was double digits in the 70s cost of postage almost doubled in one year.  Postage is not a good indication of general inflation fluctuating a fair bit.  The huge rise in international postage that for a 20g Christmas card to Europe (no longer a 20g price, now have to do up to 100g), or a cheapskate 10g card to the 'States (again have to go up to the 100g price) , both around a quid in 2015, and now has more than doubled in real terms.  Cards exchanged with the US last year were arriving in the New Year.  Funnily enough they came much quicker this year.  So all my cards abroad were by email this year. The other reason we send less cards is that it was once a good opportunity to keep in touch with news.  I still personalise many cards with a news and for some a letter, and am a bit grumpy when I get a single line back,  Or worse a round robin about their perfect lives and families.  But most of us now communicate I expect primarily by WhatApp, email, FB etc.  No need for lightweight airmail envelope and paper in one.    The other subject is the mail as a whole. Privitisation appears to have done it no favours and the opening up of competition with restrictions on competing for parcel post with the new entrants.  Clearly unless you do special delivery there is a good chance that first class will not be delivered in a day as was expected in the past.   Should we have kept a public owned service subsidised by the tax payer?  You could also question how much lead on innovation was lost following the hiving off of the national telecommunications and mail network.
    • Why have I got a feeling there was also a connection with the beehive in Brixton on that road next to the gym
