Other large chains include Gourmet Burger, the Co-Op, Londis and Iceland. Smaller chains (meaning more than one shop in London) include Le Chardon, Hope and Greenwood, Paine and Hunters, Jo Partridge, Jo Jo Mamans, BC Bikes, Willis B...

Just saying, we have plenty of the "dreaded chains" already. I agree with you that I like the scale and character of ED (including the existing chain stores).

I have to disagree, and I really dislike the way Lordship Lane has trendified over the years. I can't think of a clothing shop that I would want to buy anything from, but I would like to be able to buy clothes and get my food shopping locally. Even a branch of Next or H&M would be an improvement on what we've got. I see nothing wrong in having some chain more chain stores - as for supermarkets, in my opinion almost anything would be an improvement on the Co-op or Iceland.

Perhaps we should just pull Lordship Lane down and turn it into the South London equivalent of Bluewater...

The rest of ED could be the car park.

Then you could have all the shops you are yearning to see here :))

(I don't think a shop with two or three branches really counts as a "chain", does it?)

Small chain I think. I don't mind. I like shops that sell things I want no matter how many of them there are if the service is good etc. Most of the stuff people are asking for already exists in ED but off Lordship Lane. Explore some more!

This was my my full generation idea to make it more upmarket

NCP car park with intergrated coffee shop and estate agents with a new Indian to supply snacks.

Perhaps also to include a hidden ICELAND. In New York the latest fad is prohibition bars this could be an upmarket whizz for some ED people

Independent stationers closed down only a couple of years ago from what is now Give + Take next to the EDT, so can't see it working now if it didn't then.

Aah yes, who can forget the happy independent stationer's atmosphere, the delightful carping at fellow staff/family and the ld-fashioned customer-friendly catchphrases such as:

"What do you want that one for?"

"You've touched it, you'll have to buy it"

"Women like you shouldn't be working, you should be at home with your kids"

    • Oh give it a break.  We have an MP who makes racist comments, yet our media (and what seems like this Forum) that generally hate Labour (and loved Johnson) are just out looking for the dirt. It's a move on, nothing to see here.  Particularly if she used a letting agency.

    • I don't think a single all-inclusive URL is easily doable.  When you enter a search the system presents the result without any of one's search parameters added to the URL.  So I suggest you go to https://planning.southwark.gov.uk/online-applications/search.do?action=advanced where you just need to enter the address -- use SE22 8EW -- and the  Date Received start date.  I used 1/1/2025.  The three Tesco applications, all minor things, were all made in May.  The Simple search that I'd done previously had no time limit, and didn't include anything else that might have been from Tesco in the last two years. Incidentally, when I searched on the address 29-35 Lordship Lane it did not pick up the Tesco applications, which were held as 29 - 35 Lordship Lane Grrr!
