Jaco not only are the blackbirds awake and squawking at that time but would seem everything other resident ED bird too! Oh AND the drunken human ones too! ::o

You should live opposite Nunhead Cemetery - 4.30am every morning with every species known to man squawking it's head off. There seems to be a few pairs of escaped green parakeets making the most noise along with Mr & Mrs Woodpecker. It's enough to drive anyone mad, just on eBay looking under 'shotguns'...

Agreed, it is nice waking up to birds rather than traffic like in my previous place.

However, this one bird doesn't stop. I really think it is a mating call. He should go on match.com!

There are a more than a few pairs of escaped Parakeets - there's loads of 'em. They seem to feel the need to squawk in flight and when static, they are of Australian extraction apparently.

It really quite sad to read of people complaining of birds singing in the morning. What are you doing in bed at 5.30 in the morning anyway? It's the nicest time of the day! Want to spend your life sleeping?

I love waking up and hearing birds, but I don't wake up until about 6:30 or 7 no matter what is going on outside.

You might need a bit more physical exercise or alcohol to ensure your sleep is deep enough!

Hi,

I think it is quite sad that you have to moan about the birds. They are the start for you to a bright new day, to encouragae you to wake up and grasp the new day. If you do not like birds I suggest you visit Auschwizth (might be spelt wrong) in Germany, A stark reminder what life is like with no birds or wild animals. Just enjoy nature as it was intended.

I suppose it depends on what you're used to. I love hearing birds and find it very sad that we don't have a proper dawn chorus any more due to destruction of habitats etc, but if you've always lived in the city perhaps the constant background hum of traffic sounds more natural. I grew up in the country and I remember a friend coming to stay and waking me in the middle of the night to say it was too dark and too quiet and he couldn't sleep!

That phenomenon has been well documented - Londoners being woken in the middle of the night when it does, on the rare occasion, get too quiet.

Heaven for me is a weekend somewhere with no traffic or plane noise, no street lights and no network coverage but with the sound of birds, wind in the trees and running water. Think I need to move to the Dales - unless Mayor Boris could designate central London a feng shui zone.

To bring this back to topic, I agree the green parakeets are annoying and I've been told they attack and displace native songbirds. Seen and heard them on Peckham Rye and also in Dulwich Park - not a pretty sound.

I had also heard that the parakeets were impacting negatively on other birds but I had a conversation with an RSPB chap in the park recently and he said there were no problems with them. Agree their squawk is not attractive but I do like seeing them flying about
