Great to see the rise of the BAFTAs over the years where now the Di Caprios and Clooneys, Thurmans etc make the trip.

Remember many years ago the big presentations being made by satellite to absent stars.

Good to see Cate Blanchett win best actress as she was brilliant in Blue Jasmin. Saw it at the Ritzy.

I was a bit irritated by the lack of British in it. The Televised show is just a showcase for American and the same old prominent British Stars. Why don't we see the winners of all the other awards receive theirs? Surely the winners of Sound, Editing, Production Design are as important as Actors, Directors, Producers? And in no way is '12 Years a Slave' a better movie than 'American Hustle' imo, so looks like those voting (Academy members) were a bit partisan after all.

So agree, she is so smug! And not that great in my opinion, but that's probably because I think she's so smug and don't like her anymore!

To be honest I keep my head down during the awards season because there are too many of them. BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Oscars, Grammys, Brits and on and on and on. It's the time of year when hardly a week goes by without celebs getting awards for something or other. It's very unreal and feeds the celebrity culture. I like looking at the dresses but I don't care who wins.

It's OK as much as schloss gloss goes, but with so many films made or tweaked within a billimeter of reality, right here in the UK, they have to come surely

What is suprising is that the 'mericans turn out to let us see them , sans CGI. I mean Tom hanks looks like he's permanently CGI'd and others who I didn't even recognise were there (my son pointed out who was who after- huh really, ok !)

Gorgeous Di Caprio stands out wherever he goes, I could lick him for hours, but Brad? What's happened to Brads neck, is he beefing up again for another film. He's a hunk of something for sure

Lastly, there's something of the Village Fete about some of our British actors. I like them in most parts, but they're slightly mis matched undies and dogs on the sofas, no ?

It's part of the charm I suppose

Saint Steven was funny, he knew he was messing with their heads

I think matthew McConaughey should get that Oscar Karen. His performance was truly transforming in 'Dallas Buyers Club'. Whereas Leo was just Leo in 'Wolf of Wall Street' imo.

I think the arrival of Hollywood to the Baftas though has something to do with those Actors being en route to some big annual sales agent thing in Europe that they are contractural obliged to attend for promotion by their studios. The Baftas used to take place later but they were moved about 10 years ago to make it worth those stars attending en route. A clever move clearly.

I believe it is MIPTV. It now takes place in April but back then it was the end of February. MIPTV is an important sales through to TV vehicle for European territories, just as MIPCOM serves as a pre-cursor to Cannes and movie distribution for theatrical release within Europe.

    • It is disgraceful if it means small businesses have to close and people are displaced.
    • Southwark Council upgrades the public realm in Dulwich: this is disgusting favouritism for the rich! It's disgraceful!!! Southwark Council upgrades the public realm in Peckham: this is disgusting social cleansing! It's disgraceful!!! #SouthwarkDerangementSyndrome is real By the way, aficionados of prostitution and drugs will be happy to hear they remain a problem in the streets south of King's Cross station, just as they were when I lived there prior to gentrification. (To be clear: they weren't a problem because of my presence). I'm sure that will be a great relief to some of our friends on here that are scared knocking down a derelict building will turn Peckham into Royal Tunbridge Wells overnight.
    • I very much hope 'social cleansing' is not on the cards - the great value of Peckham is its rich mix of people both living and visiting the areas. If you mean removal or discouragement of criminal activity (including vandalism) then I would agree of course - and I would be very much in favour of actual cleaning in the area - the fact that Peckham is 'mixed class' is a good thing, surely (which is what 'social cleansing' often refers to). Kings Cross (which stimulated this part of the debate) had a very significant prostitution and drugs culture - with some elements of rack-renting and significant criminality. It was also far more 'run-down' and over a wider area) than the area around our station - even if that could do with more investment.
    • Yet we can. Given the development of the shopping centre, the expensive flats, lack of social hosing, closure of the stalls and hairdressers around the station to make room for the new square, I think it's quite clear where this is going.   It's not improving the area for the existing, its removal of the existing to make it better for the upgrade of the area.
