I could see the HEMS dr's at the scene when I came by just before 9am - was going down the other way. Think once they've stabilised the patients and whizzed them over the hill the road will open again fairly quickly = there was a recovery lorryh there already. Hope whoever it is is ok - know they'll get best poss care.
I got caught up in that; had to get out of my bus and walk past just as all the police/fire/ambulance types were arriving. Didn't want to look too much but what I saw didn't look good - looks as if someone went under a lorry. Loads of sirens, emergency people rushing about with a 'this is bad' expression on their faces. Not nice at all.

The cozzers were appealing for witnesses and stopped me in me motor whilst I was leaving my house for work this morning! I guess the accident must have been nasty and they were just taping the road off.

Imagine asking me though! As if I am gonna bleat to the filth!

I realised who this was this weekend. The guy lived just over the road from me. The most friendly neighbour we have he always had time to stop and chat and was just the sort of guy that made ED the friendly community that makes me love to live here. I'm sure they'll be plenty of other locals who knew him well and will miss him. All my sympathy to Emma and the boys.

Nutty

the funeral was today. It was a big turnout I must say and most of us were in tears. His grandfather collapsed and died of grief this morning on his way to the church father Charles at Goose green told. Its weird how things turn out. Stephen was a great guy and we chatted loads and walked around together as I live a stones throw away too.Emma is expecting a third child. Best wishes to her. She has plenty of love and support around her.

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
    • You've got a point.  Thinking Leyland and Screwfix too but this felt different.
