Hipsters

Must haves: so much fun and getting all the girls (or boys) that it makes lonely trolls angry

If you're going to give in to projecting your lack of self-esteem onto others, please make the effort to get your facts straight:

1) Beards are no longer hipster. They've passed the tipping point by some margin (Jesus, it was even on the Today programme that they ceased to be cool when all the non-cool kids started sporting them)

2) Not wearing a fleece doesn't make you a hipster. It makes you an individual with a modicum of self-respect (There is never any excuse for wearing a fleece unless polar exploring)

Hipsters -

Must haves.

A first class honours in getting s*it faced in a s*ithole.

Getting the night bus home and being loud and posh whilst juggling a kebab or boxed chicken meal. Must be annoying on public transport.

A bad taste in vintage tops (preferably floral or ironic in some way). Tops with band names from the 70s seem popular too.

Never haves.

Never stay in a s*it area too long. No ones likes the p*sshead who hangs around on the streets at 6 in the morning, especially in a 'former' cool place. You're basically on a par with a park bench alcoholic if you do.

Never talk about yourself in terms of 'labels' - you won't have too many friends if you do.

Never laugh at something that's actually funny. It's the height of coolness. Keep a sarcastic face at all times.

Completely ignore everything I'm saying. But check out my sweater, cos it's dated ugly and from a long time ago, and you want it off me don't ya?

Louisa.

You're wrong. I know who you're talking about. For a start, none of those people are rich, or even well off. None of them are posh. They're not slumming it which is pretty much what hipster is, appropriation. If you don't like singing, don't go to a football match.

I just find it amusing that people can get still so narked by how some people dress and choose to live their lives in a certain style, that does no harm to anyone, get over it, good grief ... Ps I have no beard or any form of headwear, but would like some DM's as I loved wearing them in the 80's, but fear I'm a tad too over hill for them now ;)

Personally, I find intolerance more annoying than "hipsters" ;-)

Yes, some folks can wind us up with their ways or appearance, but stereotyping a group is a great way to cause division. We're all in at least a few groups whether we think so or not, and we all wind others up in some way or another; even just by existing.

I try to focus on what I like in ED, not what winds me up... there's enough in the latter category to fill a novel.

Even if it IS post-modern Gregorian chanting with a cynically lazy approach to the dative and ignorance of the ablative. Posh kids love footy too.*

*Play up Gentlemen!

I love singing at a footy match, I just dont like some of the singers in this case.

And does one have to be rich to be a hipster?

And how do you know whether any of them are rich / well off, or slumming it?

Hi Otta

People like you are the lifeblood of the Hamlet :-) Hope to meet you next season. I bet you have been going home and away supporting the Hamlet.

Unlike the Hipsters you speak of? I bet you have more fun going away singing your songs when they don't go :-)

What's your favourite song at Dulwich to sing? We can have sing song next year away from them.

This post seriously embodies all that is cr*p about East Dulwich.

Some people with beards go to the football and sing, get over it.

I don't have a beard but seriously, come over and meet some of the gentlemen with beards, you might like them, then again I suspect you might only go to the one big game a year.

Down with singing and having a good time at a footy match I say.

Blokes with beards and a hat or tossers, I would rather stand with the beards.

If they happen to be gay that could make them bears, but not sure what the mainstream category would be. Normal middle age maybe?

    • Great shout. They do need the extra fat when it’s winter, but don’t use fat balls from April as they are dangerous for nestlings as the babies can choke on lumps of the fat. When it gets milder switch to suet pellets as they are harder and don’t melt (the grease is bad for feathers.
    • Rather alarmist. There is unlikely to be snow this week, but even if there is that is natural and wildlife adjust accordingly. There are fewer insects to eat due to what humans have done to the planet over the decades.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decline_in_insect_populations  In particular: Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: Agricultural Chemicals: Climate Change: Pollution: Invasive Species: There is even a case for not feeding birds due to the spread of disease through feeders, greenfinch population was decimated.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/24/should-we-stop-feeding-birds-what-happens-if-we-do-and-does-it-spread-disease   I do feed the birds but keeping a watching eye on the evidence.   And I try to grow insect and bird friendly plants including attempts at a meadow.   There could also be an argument for not keeping cats as these may decimate bird populations.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/aug/14/cats-kill-birds-wildlife-keep-indoors   You will need squirrel proof feeders and even then you may have the starlings and green squwaky things eating most of the food left out for small birds.
    • Apparently this year due to the weather there are fewer insects for the birds to eat. So please if you don’t usually buy fat balls & seeds to put out (in safe places to avoid the cats ) a plentiful supply . They really need it this year, especially with snow forecast later this week.    Thankyou
